“It’s a cage without a key” “ his quiet world of white and gold” Just WOW! Tom Petty loved this song - it was one of his masterpieces!!!!
@flaggman1 Жыл бұрын
This was mentioned in the Tom Petty Biography I read. Initially, he did write this for S. Nicks. However, the song was too good and he told her and she said “ keep it”. Write a different song for me. So he did, “ stop dragging my heart around”. Petty didn’t say he had a personal attachment to the song, only that it was too good. But, I think he did feel it had the mirror effect on his first wife, Jane Benyo. He was only 17 when they met.

Tom actually originally wrote this song Stevie Nicks, however, he liked it so much he told her “I can’t give you this song”. Ultimately, he wrote her; “Stop dragging my heart around”. I read three Tom Petty biographies!

For me personally what makes this song so great is it tells the lesser known story of someone who gets left behind in a failed relationship when one person is ready to move on before the other is, the third verse especially covers how watching that same person in a relationship later and how they treat their new significant other so much better than they ever did them, that burning, cutting pain from the realization the X had the potential to be a better person they just didn't see you as worth the effort.

Lol that was my first thought but she is paying close attention to him to really match him and she knocked this song out so beautifully. There is a lot of just pure talent in the way she watches him and that is worth crediting.
@ohdear22753 жыл бұрын
@@robbybobbybobirwin You're right. She does this when she harmonizes. It looks like love though when she looks at Tom in this video. I think she did love him. There may even have been an affair, but she hasn't said so that I know of. She's spoken about her relationships with other lovers who were famous musicians: Lindsey, of course, Mick Fleetwood, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh. I read an interview in which she said she loved Joe Walsh above all of them. I'd love to know the full story of each relationship, because I'm such an admirer of hers. However, it has nothing to do with why I love her music and it's just curiosity. I have no expectation or right to more of her life story than she cares to share. Back to your original point (sorry I digressed), there's a great YT video in which she and Sheryl Crow sing Strong Enough. They watch one another as she watched Tom Petty in this one. I think to harmonize perfectly.

In 1981 Petty tells Melody Maker, “When I wrote that song, I wrote it very quickly, I mean maybe in ten, 15 minutes. I just wrote it all down on paper and then I just picked up the guitar and tried to sing each line out. It took me maybe an hour to do that - it don’t happen every day, fans! How is it possible I’ve never heard this before? There’s no such thing as a perfect song but this comes so close. Their vocal harmonies alone are fabulous. Every human with a heart can relate to the lyrics. And the stripped down instrumentals make it ... perfect. I had a woman look at me that way for a few years and will always regret not doing whatever it would’ve taken to keep her with me.

Stevie asked Tom to write her a song but when they sang it the first time he took the lead and they both knew he had to keep it for himself. He had already written Stop Dragging My Heart Around and gave it to her instead. From this point forward she was smitten and wanted to be a Heartbreaker but they always told her no girls allowed. I think it took 25 years for her to get the honorary title. Tom would be so touched that she invited Mike C to join FM. I imagine it was a very welcome diversion for him.
@mikemay83343 жыл бұрын
Oh no, it was not like that at all. When they first got together it was through an outside source wanting them to make music together. She was critical of Tom because she was in love with Buckingham. She made some comment about Tom’s guitar playing not being good enough or some crap. That pissed Tom off. They make good music together, but it wasn’t all a bed of roses. I remember the interviews back then, they were both on top of the game but Stevie was looking for another place to get away from Buckingham.

It was all based on a lie- a lie that went on for 4 years, and changed what good I was. But now, I'm trying to find whom I was at one time. And it's getting there. Hard Promises/Long After Dark are both masterpieces..way way way underrated and far too often overlooked. This is just one of the many magnificent tunes on those LPs. ...godspeed TP

One of my favorites--just pure, beautiful harmony! Needles & Pins, also wonderful. Thank God we have his music forever.❤🙏

I will always love Tom.. he was the friend and father to so many of us who were fatherless. He spoke to us and made us become better people against the odds. 🌻🌻🌻

I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music🎧 today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?

Quite possibly my favorite TP song and recording EVER. I go back to this one more than any other song. "Hard Promises" is certainly my favorite album by TP & the HBs.

Tom Petty is one of the best artists ever. Stevie Nicks too. This song is amazing. I feel he and his band are totally under rated.

Emmylou and Gram, Stevie and Tom...when two voices blend like that.....too beautiful for words. Addit: I think this is one of Stevie’s best vocals.
