I was 18 and had just moved in with my boyfriend in our own apartment. We bought a VHS-player and I was waiting for music videos to show on TV so I could record them. We only had two channels in Sweden and one single program that showed a couple of videos each week. So this song was one of the early ones recorded and has been a favourite of mine since then. One reason: In 1981, Petty said that out of “terrible guilt” he offered to give Nicks another song instead of Insider, and played her a few castoffs from that year’s Hard Promises sessions. She jumped at Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, which Petty co-wrote with guitarist Mike Campbell. “That’s why I wanted you to write a song,” Nicks said. “It’s rock’n’roll, that’s what you do.” Petty thought he was giving her the song, not the recording. “We’d already cut it as a Heartbreakers song, with Tom singing the whole thing,” Tench says. “At the same time, Jimmy Iovine was dating Stevie, though he was keeping it clandestine. And I think Jimmy thought the song could be a hit for her.” The song’s irresistible swampy groove, punctuated by Campbell’s searing guitar stabs and Tench’s Booker T-like organ fills brought out a sassy repartee between the two singers, even if the duet was concocted in the studio by Iovine. Petty’s initial reaction was not enthusiastic: “He plays me Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, the same track, with her singing,” Petty said in Runnin’ Down A Dream. “I go: ‘Jimmy, you just took the song…’ His comeback was like: ‘This is gonna buy you a house.’ But it pissed me off because it came out at the same time as our single [A Woman In Love], and I think ours suffered."

The fragile pain in his voice during the verses speaks louder than the chorus when he opens up. Only Tom Petty could do this to such staggering effect. He was so goddamn clever and on point. If any of those jagoff contestants on American Idol or the Voice attempted this song, theyd overdo it with worthless vocal acrobatics in lieu of subtlety. There hasnt been a pop song this great made by anybody since this ,unless it was by Petty himself. He could have been a Beatle for Christs sake. No wonder George loved him so much.

They've distinctly diff't sound/style, & are unique in their creativity, but Tom's artistry & musicianship, the way he hit certain grooves, & the emotional impact of a soul set to music - life reflected via song - strikes a similar spot in my heart as Neil Young's work. Never got to see Neil live, but caught Tom at the Stanley in Pittsburgh circa '79-80 - that gig hit me w/the same force as the 1st time I saw Neil do Hurricane, I think on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert around '75. Powerful stuff.

They were a great band with Mike Campbell's incredible guitar work at the lead- haunting is a good adjective for his style and he got a lot of the attention along with Petty, rightfully so. Petty got much more attention and money after going solo but when he was singing with the Heartbreakers and he had Campbell on lead they were one hell of a band.

This is one of the songs that when it plays, just works intense, passionate magic to all who can hear it. Then it flows out into space and it's still heading towards the edges of the universe. It's that powerful.

This song highlights everything that was great about this band. Stan's driving beat, Tom's emotion, Mike's brilliant guitar, Benmont......this song just sums them up, one of my favs.

You can feel the pain in his voice through the chorus yet it’s subtle enough to not be overbearing. Petty is my favorite artist of all time and always seems to speak right to my life in all his songs. Rest In Peace.

At that time in his life he may be writing songs from personal experience. He knew some pain, but that didn't break him. Tom Petty, a good man.

This is timeless. I really think they were ahead of the rest.. Whoever directed this video particularly the director of photography, should have got an award for this, it's so good. Tom has got an ability to convey more than just his voice.. a talent that not all singer/ songwriters have.

Not my favorite TP song (Refugee is), but my favorite video. I believe the cinematographer here also worked on The Police's "Every Breath You Take". Both videos were shot in the same place.

In 1999, my local rock station played this song randomly, out of nowhere. This after going through 3 break up, rejection, heartbreak moments the previous 6 years. 8-9 years I bought Tom Petty's Anthology CDs and his live CD set a few months after he passed away.

@@rodolfohuezo6999 What are the politics behind this song being overlooked? I'm actually curious. Like, was it something governmental politics(ie some stupid form of censorship or something) or was it record label politics?
