The melody was taken from a Russian opera "Knyaz Igor" (Князь Игорь). There is a part "Uletai na kryl'yakh vetra. Половецкие пляски) - Fly away by wings of wind

One of the best pop music adaptations of classical music -- in this case a melody by Alexander Borodin. Tony Bennett is at his best here as well with this chart topper. Thanks for posting!

Performed at the time he had the actual hit with this... ...and introduced by the original, the model for the character in "Pulp Fiction" that my students call "that weird-looking guy in the nightclub scene." Look at Bennett's body language, the easy physicality which accompanies his effortless, flawless singing, getting the message of the lyric across perfectly, all alone on that darkened stage. (Try to imagine John Mayer doing this: It's a non-starter.) This is valuable, for so many reasons.

I think mainly what makes him so good is his effortless ability to hit the notes. He is never sharp or flat, even on the first few notes of a song. I would rather that he sang a little less 'behind the beat' and more straight ahead rythymically, but it is worth it to hear him caress each note with perfect intonation.
@constable1442 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I love this performance but in the 1960s, the magazine, "Melody Maker" faulted Tony Bennett's singing for his inability to hold a sustained note in tune. I can't say that I have ever noted this fault
@ronrice19312 жыл бұрын
@@constable144 That's interesting. He's certainly not what I'd call a strong singer, he is not known for his sustains, but his intonation seems flawless to me as well.
