Considering the amount of lube I had to use just to not feel any pain from copyright's big one for this video, the thought of doing it for games like that is scary to me.

And I am on Day 3, Monsieur Jak! First off, I really appreciate the time and effort you put into customizing the intros and title screens tailored to each game and making fun of it. It shows consistency and that your editing skills have excelled over the years. You must’ve been working on these videos for close to a year if you did it all the way through THP5. All right, this is going to be a LONG ONE, so get some popcorn! And take your time. You singing a Kasabian cover is fucking hilarious! I love it. I don’t think this was on purpose, but the intro to that song makes me feel like what THP8 did to my mind: “One, take control of me?”  (Game controls you since the controls are whack) “You're messing with the enemy” (Neversoft is messing with their fans making enemies) “Said its 2, it's another trick” (Is this game a bluff, or did you seriously release this shit?) “Messin with my mind, I wake up” (Hopefully this travesty is all a dream!) “Chase down an empty street”  (I’m skating down the street looking for content in an unfinished game WTF!!) THE CREATE A SKATER OPTIONS WERE AWFUL!!! I completely agree with you on this one. I played both versions, 3 body types to 5 body types just doesn’t cut it. They should’ve just shoved all the customization options from all the previous games onto this one, considering it was on a Bluray disc. And why have body types? Just make your skater the way you want from scratch and mix match looks. The only cool thing about it was you were able to skate as a kid this time without the Kid Mode cheat, but that doesn’t justify taking away the option of… making a skater look like you. They even took out the facial dimension options which really came in handy for those of us that didn’t own an EyeToy or PS Eye. I didn’t really use the create a park option much games after THPS2 since it seemed like an overwhelming chore, but, I know a lot of people enjoyed that..or creating a deck/paint graphic/goals..This was such a disappointment. I could make a more accurate looking skater in THPS2 which is out right pathetic. I didn’t even realize this was a true open world game because they never advertised it as such, but you’re absolutely right, this format is what we were expecting THAW to be. The menu looked a little lackluster with the clouds and simple text. The clouds were sort of cool since it gave that ‘fresh air’ feel or going as high as you can in the ranks and up a ramp. But, it just didn’t have that edgy feel that I’m used to for the series. It was like they made the menu screen in Power Point and just left it at that and you could tell they took a lot out of this game compared to previous titles. As for the game play, HOLY FUCK. They took all the amazing moves out of this game that made the three previous titles so much fun. They kept the bert slide, but you couldn’t do the spin extensions no graffiti, no wall flips, no regular flips, no sticker slaps and a glitchy ass wall run. I understand maybe if they were going for a more ‘realistic’ approach to skating and peeled back all the crazy impossible moves, I can see if they didn’t want to rehash the old format and wanted to try a new approach, but none of it was utilized properly, the game just wasn’t fun. I felt there were no instances where getting off my board and climbing/hanging was useful in navigating levels. Anytime I tried to wallrun my character just seemed to repel himself from the wall and not get any height. It was too much work to even try, and some rails and ledges in the levels weren’t even grabable. My character would just ‘shake glitch’ and disconnect with some of the rails/ledges he came in contact with. That seemed to be a popular thing that happened with early PS3/X360 titles. Every rail and ledge in THAW was grabable within level boundaries, that was cool. These advanced graphics seemed to have sloppy contact points, hard to explain, but it probably ties in with the bails: I’m glad you hated the bails as much as I did! All 7 previous titles had a great way to bail, gravity was taken into account, the skater fell and bled, and was back up on his feet ready to skate. Don’t change it if it ain’t broke. I don’t know why they couldn’t keep this for this title, and tapping X to get up quickly worked out. Now if you bail, your character just turns into a lifeless corpse and starts having a seizure on the ground for 10 seconds until you ‘reset’ your skater, or as you showed us, a vert bail will just launch you into the air for a long ass time and waste valuable play time. Why do this? If they were trying to make this more realistic from previous titles, the last thing you do is make the falls look fake and glitchy. I’m guessing maybe this was the only way the “broken bones goals” could work, but I found those stupid and unfun as well. The goals did not seem cohesive in this game, I was almost never lined up properly with where I was supposed to go at the start of a goal or I ended up overshooting my distance even with low stats. Everything seemed off kilter and combo strings were very hard to do. Speaking of stats, I have a love-hate relationship with how they decided to it for this game. They really dragged out the way you earn stats. I was used to rushing through previous titles and getting my stats up quickly, but this game made you grind for an extremely long time before you could gain stat points for grinding. It sort of pissed me off since it took forever, but at the same time was a cool idea to make it more challenging. Another thing they did was, for instance, if you had to perform a task and land a combo with let’s say a minimum of 50,000 points, In previous titles I would start a combo far away from the goal with grinds or flatland tricks and by the time I performed the goal I would’ve scored 75,000-150,000 points. But this game made you restart the goal if you exited the immediate play area. Forcing you to do the combo in close proximity to the goal so expert spam players like myself couldn’t cut corners and take the easy way out. The level designs in this game didn’t impress me too much. The levels had no geographical locations (which is something I always appreciated). I mean, at a glance the bright colors and presentation looked nice, but the designs combined with the shotty controls and falls made this really hard to play and navigate smoothly. I understand the disparity you had with this game trying to focus more on rising to the top of competitions the traditional way (with the help of My Name Is Earl) while also incorporating these zany characters like the real estate agent and The Shining twins that would fit well into the UG games. They could’ve gone for a zany surreal approach starting in the suburbs almost like the world of Edward Scissorhands or The Truman Show, and could’ve been a really fun fictional world but they half assed that, and quarter assed the game as a whole. Because the skateboard physics and tricks looked different and stats took forever to earn, I found myself really working my butt off to gain the minimum points on the skate competitions. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I did get the rhythm down where I basically had to string together my vert tricks with manuals the whole time to reach a winnable score. And the only reward after beating the game was just ‘Hey! Youre in the top 8..whoo!” It almost had the same idea that UG1 had, but the story was uninteresting, the stakes were lower and I felt restricted the whole time playing it. I was able to kind of muster through the game being the veteran that I was, but doesn’t seem too friendly to new players of the franchise. One thing I really appreciated about this game was the Nail a Trick mode and the different look of the balance meter. It took a while to get used to the timing of the flips and when to land, but just seeing the board flip in slow motion and the wheels of your skateboard spinning in HD was very cool. Unfortunately, this minor victory does not make up for how fucked up everything else in this game was. Maybe they needed an extra year to work out the kinks of a new generation system’s power and rushed this one out, but considering later releases of this franchise not being so good, I’m not so sure more time could’ve saved this game. As for the numbers, we have not seen eye to eye on the numbers scale thus far. It depends if we’re just using our judgment based on comparing games within one franchise or the quality of a game overall, as well as if we decide to use increments of ‘1’ or ‘0.5’ (I watch Angry Joe from time to time). And numbers are a one dimensional observation over something that has so many qualitative and creative elements. I was totally okay with giving this game on either platform a 3-5/10. But in no universe would I ever rate this game higher than American Wasteland. I beat this game once out of sheer curiosity just to say I played it (the same reason why some of us choose to watch bad movies), and then I never picked it up again; no replay value for me. It just felt like more of a chore to play than actual fun, and I was wondering if the Neversoft team just completely lost their marbles, and forgot what made this franchise successful. Like they spent every minute of their time developing it while drunk and were going to miss their deadline, so they released an unfinished game and didn’t care if they got to keep their jobs for the next release.. or Tony let his divorces get to his head and was forcing them to make a shitty game so he had somewhere to channel his anger :'D I should maybe consider doing my own web page, but, I don’t want to re-invent the wheel you built. Keep it up! Your ally and fellow critic ~Anton

Well then... On your point about the stats, something I failed to mention that really shit me was that no matter how much you build them up, you never get faster. Rolling along is slow for the entire game. But honestly, I was able to do really strong combos in this game from all corners of the map to the other side which is seriously fun. Much more enjoyable here than in American Wasteland with those fucking hallways. But as I said, the frame drops and messy bail physics would normally fuck me up before I could land. And as for the scoring thing, I said for THAW that I wasn't expecting to go that low. I had an idea that I was going for a 5/10 but after replaying it for the first time in forever and for the first time, looking at it for review. It really stood out to me as mediocre. So for Project 8, giving it a score higher than American Wasteland for the true version at least was not something I thought was going to happen. But hey, that's how it goes I guess. Didn't even know the 360 existed until about 10 weeks ago when I started doing research for this special. Also if you've got things to say, you should start a channel or blog or whatever, if it's something you'd be interested in. Already you have a lot to say about stuff so fucking do it dude! :D

Yeah once I got the hang of the controls I was able to do combos, and I agree that they connected the levels way better than THAW, just each level design didn't impress me, and the glitches made it tough. Oh wow, you didn't know the 360/PS3 one existed all this time? My friend bought the PS2 version when it first came out (I was about 16 at the time, a few years older than you), and then I bought the PS3 version in 2010 and beat it. I thought you'd figure it had a 6th gen release if you knew about the 360 version of THAW. But yes, I had very strong feelings about this game, and it was the last installment I played through entirely. You're right I should start something. As you know, making videos just costs time, money, a decent computer, and editing skills to make it presentable. I've wanted to review certain movies for a while too. But I appreciate your support and feedback!
@SquareEyedJak
@SquareEyedJak 7 жыл бұрын
Well I knew it existed, but based on THAW I just assumed the newer versions were identical like American Wasteland and never really looked it up. And just so you know, some of the more enjoyable videos I've seen are the most basic, no skill needed, things you'll ever see. As long as you've got something to say, you'll soon find an audience who want to listen.

lmao i beat this game when i was 12, it is not nearly as diffucult as you make it out to be. 1. the create a skater engine is more simple because they had a completely different engine to work with the character models in the games prior were incredibly simple in comparison, 2. your major complaints in terms of gameplay are based on how your character falls off of a skateboard and the character not being able to climb very well, how are either of these things a problem when you say that off-board traversal is entirely unnessasary to go through the levels. it's not very deep neversoft had a year to develop this game that's why it's rough around the edges, working with an entirely new engine with 2 new consoles is not condusive to very ironed out work.

I played and they do happen but not much. What I think is that since the PS3 is easier to swap the hard drive and mine is newer, it is struggling less to load the world, this game tries to do like GTA which loads the world around you into chunks. Since the PS3 has a mandatory install it is not trying to do this on the disc and it could be improved on 360 by installing (before running any game, press Y so it appears the option to install to improve load times) but to replace the hard drive with a new one instead of the proprietary formatted one which can be slower is kinda annoying. On some PS3 consoles I played I noticed some games loadings slightly worse than mine because they still used the hard drive it came around when it was made

Another Tony Hawktober video, another Paul W comment! I'll admit I was kind of anxious when you gave the PS2 version a 4/10 when it didn't seem like you went as in-depth with it as usual. I agree that it is absolute trash, don't get me wrong. But it worried me that you were about to give Project 8, overall, a 4/10 based solely on the PS2 version. Thankfully I noticed that there was still like 7 minutes left. I agree with pretty much everything on the 360 version that you said, though I definitely would have given it a higher score. Probably a low 8 or a high 7 in my book! The framerate issues are pretty bad, and the physics and bail system are also not great. But I enjoyed it much more than you overall, evidently! But that's what's great about videogames, and artistic works in general. It will mean something different to different people, some people will love it some people will hate it. It's all how the wind blows! :) I'm slightly disappointed that Downhill Jam is the next game you'll be looking at. I was really hoping Proving Ground would be the finale to Hawktober. When it came out, I only bought it for the Guitar Hero III demo. I thought the game itself was just bad. But I have been playing it again in recent weeks and it is much better than I remember. It is difficult, probably harder than any of the other games in the series, but it's a lot better than I gave it credit for. It feels like the refined product of what Project 8 was supposed to be... sort of. It's definitely different. But you can see the influences. That being said, though, even if I'm disappointed that is your next review, I'm also pretty excited to hear your thoughts! So far our thoughts have been pretty much 1:1 on these games. Downhill Jam is one of the few Tony Hawk games I haven't played (though I bought it a month ago!), and there are some interesting polarities in reactions to it. Some love it, some hate it. I can honestly say that it looks like it has potential to be a lot of fun. So I'm looking forward to your thoughts :) Keep the awesome reviews coming!

Actually I gave it a 3/10. But yeah, the reason I had little to say about the PS2 version was to save repeating myself for everything again looking at the superior version so it seems a little out of control at first but, that's just how it had to be done. And as for Proving Ground, we gotta start next year's Hawktober with a BANG dude. Don't be upset, The Downhill Jam video is one of my preferred videos out of the week so it should be good! :D

Tony Hawk's Project 8 was definitely a pretty damn good game, I agree with the framerate, that was awful. By the way, Proving Ground is the main next installment in the Tony Hawk series. Are you going to skip that one?

So, playing it on PS3, without using the PS2 version first, it's a great game with no real issues. All the complaints were about PS2 and 360 specific issues.

I grew up on the PS2 version and yeah, linking combos in Project 8 is honestly fun but honestly I loved the game entirely. Yeah yeah, nostalgia had me loving the entire game and returning from the game itself is a treasure. 360 was alright, not the greatest but I think Project 8 is one of the best in series!

Not saying the game is good, but the 360 version should be much more smoother than that. I 100% completed the game and I remember only having two or three frame dips throughout my play through.

I remember back in 07 with my white Xbox 360, the game was smooth. When revisiting it later on my 360 slim and installing the update from xbox live, it fucked it up and the frame rate was terrible.

I just played Project 8on PS3, the last Neversoft game I hadn't played other than next gen proving ground; I can't believe it's an official NS Tony Hawk game! it feels way more like a robomodo game with the "artificial fluicity" as Flippy put it. I'm very torn about it too, it could have turned out a lot better than it was if they just had more time, but they get points for ambition.
@theobell2002
@theobell2002 9 ай бұрын
What are you talking about? THP8 plays like butter (except for the framerate). It's nowhere near close to anything Robomodo made.
