I think Twist played a role in killing the enforcer role. He was so dominant in the late 90s that he could barely even get a willing combatant. The Blues’ opponents would usually not even dress an enforcer, because it was like sending a guy to his funeral. And that experiment eventually led coaches and GMs to realize that they didn’t even need an enforcer-just play dirty hockey and don’t answer the bell. Turtle, skate away, act like you don’t understand why you’re being challenged to a fight.... That’s what nearly everyone did in the late 90s against the Blues and now it’s the gold standard across the whole league.

This is how I met one of my best friends. I was 6'5" tall and 250lbs playing B league, this little Indian guy who's all of 5'4" and 150lbs throws, what I thought was a cheap shot on me. Next time I'm on the ice with him in the corner I remember saying to myself, I'm gonna lay this little dude out and show him whats up. No bullshit, he put me on my fucking back, fucking ass over tea kettle. This started a massive brawl between both teams, game was called, everyone was kicked off the ice, and kept separate till they left the rink. That was 2007, he's been my best friend since about a week after that incident.

I miss those days of Hockey :( Tony played for Peoria in the IHL for a while. So many that I miss... Tony Twist, Steve Fletcher, Mark Major, Enrico Ciccone, Rob Ray, Andy Bezeau, Mike Butters, Kerry Toporowski, Kevin Kaminski, John Craighead, Tracy Egeland, Chris Lipuma... a few off the top of my head. The excitement and electricy these guys brought everytime they stepped on the ice. Thanks for the memories fellas.

remember watching him for the Peoria Rivermen back in 1990, Kerry Clark took a shot at keith osborne for the rivermen, Twist skates over and says "you know we have to go now"....and they did. that was one of the three fights. He and Kelly Chase were so fun to watch that year. I would often see Twist downtown after games, funny guy. He knew his role well, I even remember when Gretzky was traded to St. Louis, the comment from Twist was "The Great One will get the respect he deserves here". But the best was the ESPN commercial when his wife said he needed his "banky" blanket when he was on the road playing. Those were the good hockey days!

I was at the game when Hartford came to St. Louis for the first time after Chase left with Shanahan in the Pronger trade and Twist fought Chase. It's probably the greatest thing I've ever seen in my time of going to games circa 1991 to the present. Wayne Gretzky scored his first goal at home as a Blue that game but nobody cared, the main event was Twist/Chase.

He’s 100% correct about it being a job. I had the role of enforcer for most of my career. The opposing role on the other teams were always known and we were like a fraternity. Just did a job but hung out plenty of times with the guys you just fought. Everything was understood and left on the ice. It’s when the pests or turtles came along that would spark a problem with a skill player and you’d have to go after the pest who wouldn’t fight but would still go after your stars that it became quite annoying. Other teams would sit out their enforcers for a pest with better skill. So no solving of problems on the ice could happen cause the pest turtles. Different era different code, I’m just glad I played during that time.
