A great example of an effective high guard was Michael Watson vs Nigel Benn. Benn exhausted himself flailing away at Watson's high guard. Watson kept cool, picked Benn off and eventually stopped him with a jab.
@Tony_Jeffries4 жыл бұрын
Yes Mikey, ya right there mate
@stevensonchambers55774 жыл бұрын
Joshua Clottey also used an effective high guard. Some other cons are not being able to visually pick up opponents that move laterally to either side. That falls with the vision being obstructed con of not being able to pick up hooks or looping punches not coming down the middle. The high guard can also be pot shotted from angles that expose openings that otherwise would not be open while standing directly in front. Strong opponents can split high guards with uppercuts and shovel hooks to the stomach. They may be partially blocked but they still do damage.

The blocked vision is the major negative for me. The opportunity to throw counters isn’t there with the high guard. Great vid Tony. Keep em coming bro. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
@juliansanderson8393 жыл бұрын
Well, the opportunity is still there, you just need to be less reliant on RRJ/Ali counters - where you use vision and hand speed to beat them to the punch - and more reliant on more conservative methods. The high guard is excellent for catch counters, where you block/catch a punch, wait for the impact on your guard, and throw the shot. A lot of boxers have made careers off that alone. Or if you gain enough experience, you’ll learn to read the signs of a punch coming from body language, shoulder movement, and pattern recognition.

@@juliansanderson839yeah you are right, thats basically blind countering tho, I do it alot and it works but also fails sometimes.
@416blackmamba Жыл бұрын
I think the best use of the high guard, as with any technique, is to mix it up. Head movement, parries, catch and shoot counters, and constantly shifting your guard (for better vision) will make this guard more effective. Also I found having your palms facing your opponent makes the high guard more dynamic and gives you better hand speed.
@tonypaella11 ай бұрын
I use palms forward too, unless I'm really bracing for impact. But palms forward allow for parries, traps, frames, traffic, hand blocks etc.
@AbeBuilt.Different4 жыл бұрын
This peekaboo method is best when your closing range so you could then punch. Especially with this I feel like you must have great reflex training, and footwork to truly master that high guard so it doesn’t become a crutch for the fighter.

I only see pros in high guard if performed correctly it is the best defense guard and when both hands are the same height the oppoent can't predict which hand is coming at them first Ricardo El Finito Lopez uses it and he never even broke his nose never lost a fight and he is one of the best ever
@oremilosavljevic3092 ай бұрын
People be talking just about defense. But nobody mentions how can you throw your jabs without any telegraphing cause no shoulder movement, you just straighten your elbow using tricep muscle. It is so good for bulkier shorter guys. On a distance you are nicely covered while firing those jabs until you make to the close distance and fire nasty combinations

Thank you for sharing your awesome experience! Quick question about hi guard. I am 178cm and 100kg. Wide shoulders. And i can even put my hands so close. When i cover my head - body is open. How i can fix it? More footwork or philadelphia’s shell?

Dear mr Jeffries, I’ve recently subscribed to your channel as it gives me realistic boxing information I can use during my own amateur boxing sessions. I am a recreational boxer, and would like to ask you the following : I tend to lean into High guard due to the fact of being more on the defense as other outclass me with their skill. Could you tell me what the difference is between high guard and “peek a boo” fighting ? Thank you for your time !
@wanna-be-cowboy4 жыл бұрын
Tony, with the high guard. Your opponent can also move you. They can jab the side of the hand making you feel as though you need to move to your side because you can't see what's happening like you said which is confusing and potentially their danger hand is coming straight through the middle of that high guard. I feel the guard being too high takes away a fighters natural relaxed state which, as you know, is the best way to be. Nice and relaxed

On the pro side fighters like Winky Wright would use head movement and parry with the high guard and Floyd would use the pull counter off the high guard. If your a high volume puncher you just want the first punch to touch the opponent to paralyze him then let the combination do the damage. Also blocking hooks isnt as bad since the shoulder has to rise for the hook and your hands are closer to your head with the high guard. Manny Paquiao also uses the high guard moving laterally and has attacked from it. The issue with the high guard is similar to the cross arm in that the boxer has to be creative in using his defense to create offense. Normally this means footwork and deception. No guard is optimal in every situation. Normally boxers use two guards.
