Mr. Jeffries, as usual, great advice. It's great that you also insist on the need to train these drills. Obviously, someone that has never done them might understand them, but would probably not be able to deliver in a real life situation. You have treated this subject before. Maybe, when you will approach it again, you could go into a little more detail. For the first method, I suspect that some people might be able to step back, but that most of us would have little chance of throwing the right hand if we have no fighting experience (even if we practice it, as you have said). We would probably avoid the first punch, just to be caught by the second one. For the second method, blocking a heavy right hand with our left hand, without gloves seems too risky. The right hand has too many chances of going through the block. Even if it hits our left hand, it will stil do lots of damage. The third method seems the most realistic one for a person with no experience. But it would be usefull if you could talk about two things here: 1. the legal aspects (because you would be the one throwing the first blow and hopefully the only one to throw) and 2. the psichological aspect: when a bigger person comes foreward as you described, the intimidation factor is huge. It might work for you (you are not intimidated because, in fact, even thow you might be the smaller one, you are an elite boxer, so you are way more dangerous than him). For someone with no experience, a thousand thoughts go through our head: "maybe I shouldn't throw because I won't be able to do damage, but I would provoke him more / give him real reason to attack me".
@tatumergo39313 ай бұрын
The bottom line to any type of this kind of activity is to get involved in training. Preferably in a good gym or club with a good professional coach. If the coach is well versed in self-defense applications even better!

2.50 mins. It's counter intuitive but use footwork to step towards them with you left elbow in front of your face, left hand over your left ear. Try to make contact with his face and your left elbow. Once in close you can take control with your left hand and use elbow strikes with your right arm. It's a fight stopper. Good advice, as always, from Mr Jeffries.

From a person who’s been in too many street fights from being a teenager through my late 30’s (and every so often after that) the most important rule is don’t fight if you can do show get away. If you can’t, ALWAYS strike first when it becomes apparent that the fight is unavoidable. Like Tony said, Act like your afraid in an attempt to get your opponent to drop his guard and then fire the hardest punch you can into his chin or jaw and then do not stop striking until the fight is over. Few have the skill to defend and counter. The person that strikes first wins at least 90% of the time. The first fight I was in I hesitated and got hit first. Thankfully, people separated us. I never got hit first again. And never lost again.

I'm a little conflicted by this. On one hand, any honest martial artist will tell you if you come up against a trained boxer in the street, you will have a real problem on your hands. By the time you get into your martial stance you will have worn multiple punches from a competent boxer. And watching Tony's vids has allowed me to correct mistakes I was making while doing bag work. That said after more study and testing I don't believe this is the best way to go in a street fight. First, Tony has a boxers mindset so he doesn't see that his closest weapon to an opponent is his lead leg. If he fired that off first, the opponent will react by trying to defend his groin meaning his head moves down allowing multiple strategies to be used. . Second, pushing an opponent back is not a good idea because it allows the drawing of a weapon should the opponent have one, or it at least puts you back to square one having to start the fight again. Plus Tony is for a split second off balance with his leading leg ready to be kicked But the major point I want to make is this vid is about fighting from a fighter, for fighters, perspective,. It's not a method a bespectacled office clerk can use with confidence with limited training. That requires a different mindset. That mindset is called self defence. There is a major difference.

You are a really good Teacher. But this smells like WT. A fight ist often more dynamic. (Excuse my bad english) The opponent often throw a punch and skip the distance, to throw another or get into clinch. The Theory is good. But not practicable.

I’m sure you are a much better fighter than me. I did karate (kenpo) in the eighties, and aikido in the nineties. But I’m 67. Couple of things make me think this advice is mixed as far as help for me. First, though aikido is generally seen as not realistic in a street fight the concepts of distance, angles, and entering are much better for me. I’ve seen some and been in a couple street fights and never understood why people do what you are showing, stand as if they were in a boxing match in range of their opponent. As an old man my reflexes, and this also goes for u trained people, is too slow. A punch is too quick to defend against. It’s almost like in a street fight the prelude some guy says “look I don’t want to fight” and at some point resign themselves to its happening and then position themselves right in the worst possible distance where the opponent has full extension and power. Create distance…make them have to move first to reach you! Then too, I learned in both martial arts to never (unless some circumstance that negates it) back up in a straight line. Better to circle, to their power side if possible, so they don’t have a clear avenue of attack. Lastly, you don’t really show the punches, but punching someone in the face there is a good chance of breaking bones in your hand. Then where am I…can’t use my dominant hand and he didn’t go down. How about a slap, or moving in and an elbow? How about an open hand strike? Without boxing gloves the hand is not protected and hitting certain areas at certain angles can break your bones. I very much like your strap back on the dominant foot, and the possibilities there, but I would first put more distance, doesn’t have to be a lot. Also strong arm or not, if you can get your elbow up in front of your face, (fist behind you) it can negate a strike no?
