A Brit living on Mindanao here, I think the loneliness aspect might drive the initial impetus to make a fundamental change to one's life, but then as information is accumulated, all of the other reasons start to be recognised and come into play. Particularly after visiting the Philippines , it's realised just how wonderful the people are and how beautiful the country really is.

Sam, yours is a wonderful story. I lived in the Philippines in the late 1950's/early 1960's when I was little. My father was in the US Navy and we got stationed at Sangley Point Naval Station in the Cavite area. We traveled to many places in the world during my father's career, but none imprinted me with such positive memories as those from my short life in the Philippines. The memories of how lovely and welcoming Filipinos were. I had friends whose fathers worked on the base. I would visit their homes, which were Nepa huts built on stilts. It was so amazing to experience their province life, so different from the US. My father's Filipino friends would invite us to their province homes for parties, where we ate goat, monkey, snake and the pig roasted on a spit with a pole inserted in one end and out the other (sorry, its a memory I cant shake...lol). When we first got to the Philippines, there was no housing for us on base. We stayed in an apartment complex in Cavite that was built just for service families waiting for base housing to become available. This is how safe it was back then: my mother would walk me out to the road and put me on a Jeepney that would would drop me off at the base entrance, where I would be transported to my school. Can you imagine today a parent putting their five year old on an open rickety bus for a ten minute ride and the Filipino people on board making sure I was safe and dropped off at the right place? Unbelievable, right? But this was the Philippines, a very common occurrence with such wonderful, gracious people. I so look forward to visiting again before I'm too old.

Twice married to Filipinas first was 15 yrs my current wife is 16 yrs and I am happy. No.1 reason why men go to Philippines is the women. I like the loneliness term, it’s a bit more diplomatic but The Philippines, Thailand and a couple of other countries in SE Asia are ‘Disneyland for adults’ in my experience the conversation with other men over a beer is a lot different than the video blogs here. Hi Sam, I liked your good honest thoughts about why Westerners especially come to the Philippines. Many of the thoughts expressed by you by your male guest and the lady were spot on. Life in the Philippines is what it should be anywhere people exist. It's communal, it's what we yearn for and that allure is what brings us in, where we have face to face communication, where honesty is a hallmark of the society, being helpful without expecting remuneration for every little act of kindness and help in general, is not mandatory. Not knowing each other, and having a great distance between us is what is breaking Western Societies, when we we speak to each other in respectful tones, and practice a sense of humility, and an attitude of gratitude we will live a more peaceful and beneficial life style . That's what the Philippines has going for their society and so much more. It's what society was meant to be what it should be about, and be inclusive of everyone.

"nose bleed" means you are talking English way too fast for them to understand, so, slow down when speaking English, use simple words and avoid using slang terms. You can also experience what "nose bleed" is like when listening to people of the Philippines speak in their native language--it can sound so fast to us foreigners that we don't recognize any of the words even when we know a few dozen words of their native language.

Hi from Canada Sam, the main reason expat come to the Philippines is to have a better quality of life, here in Canada the inflation is insane, and most people who will reach the age of 65 won't be able to retire, the cost of living here is insane, if at your retirement you do not own a house or a condo and you need to rent forget about retirement. If you do own a house and a condo you will be living slim with what they give you. I have been looking around the PHilippines and found Cebu a really nice place, IT park is modern and even with a simple pension most can live a good life in the Philippines. The western women are a lost cause and many foreigners come to the Philippines to find a life partner a good women. So far i have spoken to a few Filipinas online and its not the best way to meet, some are very nice, some are very quick to secure you up and some are real gold diggers. I rather wait to retire in the Philippines, find a place i like get my papers etc, and then try to find a good women.

IMO from USA Retired Citizen, live in the USA, married to Filipina and visit often: 1) Cost of living in USA, many people can not afford to live in the USA on social security alone. 2) Lonely yes. No one wants to be alone. For singles, in the USA, dating life not the same. The Philippines reminds Americans of 'how it used to be'. Couple that with attractive, friendly and accepting younger english speaking females, in a sun filled island life, and the Philippines is like a magnet for older single American guys.

I think money is what gets people to leave their home country, but there are plenty of place to do that, like Thailand. I think the fact they speak English is a big deciding point for many people to move to the Philippines. It allows for better communication between Filipinos and foreigners without learning a new language. Some have problems learning a new language. Even if you learn a new language, like Thai, there is still something lost in the translation.

My man Sam ….your honesty and sincerity is spot on … for myself I’m 60 No#1 reason I believe for majority of men is to meet a Filipina who has a mutual attraction to them , age differences are less important there than in the west, so PHP attracts us foreigners. So your assessment is accurate. Social status drives women more in the west than in PHP but it exist in every culture Your guest comments about the economic benefit is not untrue but there are several SE Asia countries where you do get better value ,,, I know because lived there. Many guys I’ve spoken to for example in Vietnam which is better than PHP in many ways struggle to get noticed unless your flashing the “the bills around “ … but because English is more broadly spoken communication allows possibilities . I’m a very social person with a dance background and bridge that language gap … wether I be in Manilla or Saigon or even Bangkok but despite this I do feel loneliness but less so when I’m away from Australia, I will be back in PHP Cebu to continue the quest lol 😊 Keep up the sincerity my friend

Don't kid yourself you can easily get played in the Philippines if you're not careful but the probability of meeting someone nice with traditional values, kindness, and all the other attributes you always hear about is reasonable. While the odds are higher in finding someone, it helps if you've taken care of yourself or make an effort on some level as you settle in. Even in your fourties your friends are too busy with family and work. Keeping up with life’s stress is a major killer and your priorities change, you realise time is running out and you can’t buy it back all you have are just material possessions that really don’t mean anything. I also went there on vacation to start with and it was almost like a drug i felt 20 years younger. Going home hit me pretty hard and there wasn’t a day that went by that i didn’t long to go back.

Hi Sam, this is the first time I've seen your vlog. I've seen the full cast of the Expats of Dumaguete !! and all there drama. I think you hit it on the head, no matter what the guy says it all comes back to some sort of loneliness, wether they met a girl online or they watched KZbin vlogs.I actually was working off and on in China for eight years and to direct I dated a lot of beautiful, sexy, amazing Chinese women in that time. I got out of China in December 2019 when the Vid hit Wuhan. I flew out of Chengdu after fifty eight days of living with one of my girlfriends headed to Beijing then back home to San Diego, CA. The Chinese government held me in the airport in Beijing for three days! That's a whole other nightmare story in itself. Thankfully I had another girlfriend in Beijing to help me navigate through it. I was Tom Hanks in, The Terminal . I got out after paying ten thousnd Yuan. Chinese woman are very different than Filipinas, they are very sophisticated in the way they dress, the very expensive cars and big condos they own in the big cities. At least the ones I dated where two different people. There's one in public who is animated, over the top in dressing, perfect hair and makeup , talking direct and professional. Once you get them home, the sweats or jeans come on and now there laughing, extremely caring and romantic and very naughty. Back to the subject. I ended up meeting a beautiful Filipina online at the end of Covid. She was actually working oversees and we talked everyday for eight months until she went back to the Philippines in April. I flew to the Philippines April 20th and stayed until the end of May. So obviously I was lonely if I met her online. She is amazing! First off, I just turned sixty in March and she will be forty two In December and she looks twenty five. I'm almost six, six, two hundred and sixty five pounds, shes four foot eleven and ninty eight pounds😂😂😂. I can tell you hands down, if you find the right Filipina like I did they are the complete package and I couldn't be happier. Our eighteen year age gap doesn't even exist in the fact that we mesh on everything. I will be back there in October with the ring! Like they say stick with the province girl, shes from the small island of Pilar in the Comotes Islands, two hour ferry ride from Ormoc City, Leyte. For me it was a bit of loneliness to start but now it's also economics, I can retire at sixty two, rent my house out near the beach in San Diego for a very healthy chunk of change and build in the Phil near the beach after where married. I might sell my small company of ten employees or I can run it remotely. So for me love first, money second. I hope enjoy my novel! Sorry I have way to much free time this morning. I got carried away 😅😅😂😅😂😅😂

Hi, I just want to say your reason for Americans and the like coming may start out as loneliness, but for me its not so much that, the Philippines is absolutely beautiful, beaches for days, temperate for the most part not extremely hot and not extremely cold either, but also for me its the fact the people there are so loving, kind, compassionate, and mostly raised old school to be submissive, and actual wife type, its not all about the drama, and there in the Philippines you don't have to deal with all the women's lib, I don't need a man, I am better than a man crap. Most of the people I have met here in the states from there in the Philippines are super sweet, nice, and its not all about themselves so to speak. One Day I hope to find my mate for life from in the Philippines. I hope I can afford to move there one day before I get too old I'm coming up on 50 fast!

@@phil-be-health I think you totally missed the point, I am sure he can handle a strong minded woman who makes a good income, but its not about that, where you fail to read between the lines is that he /we are looking for a woman who wants to raise a family, have children, stay home, and take care of the kids, the home, actually be able to cook, who will be submissive and not some smart ass who wants everything her way or no way. to know we are wanted and not be a stepping mat, its not all about herself and the constant drama or the thinking is a competition, IT'S NOT! it's about really getting to know your wife on an intimate level, conversating, being satisfied in the bedroom, WORKING TOGETHER in the home to make it a happy home.

what keeps people there is the fact its peaceful and serene. i retired there once and came back to usa when i ran out of money. when i arrived back in USA not only was it a rat race they went woke which i had no idea what was about until i was attacked by all sides. i miss the simplicity of the Philippines. i miss how the people there treat you like family especially when you show interest in their culture. i miss waking up in the middle of the night and able to step out to the street and not feel threatened. i miss getting on my scooter and just riding and taking roro till i hit the half way point of the money in my pocket and heading back home. i miss stopping at a sari sari to buy a cigarette and some old lady drags you into a nipa hut to take a picture with you. its just a beautiful place even though there really isn't full of infrastructure. its the people and culture.

No doubt that people go there to unwind and feel wanted whether from boredom or loneliness is anybody's guess. The money can go a long way and that is the great plus of the Phils. But then again, you can end up supporting several families when you get here. Give or don't give...is entirely up to you. The Phils. can be lots of fun but can also be depressing seeing so many people struggling financially. I go there coz I have a large farm there and finally have time to tend to it coming so close to retirement. The USA is a great place too - w/ lots of opportunities as much as you are willing to try. I love my hobbies and past times in the states of which I can never do in the PHils. My families are all here in the states too. I have many friends from school there in the Phils. and many struggle..not all of course. If people can find themselves by going to the Phils. then that is all that counts - enjoy. IMO>

I had a great life in the USA. I came here by accident. A friend of mine invited me to come here. My first day in the Philippines made me realized all the money that I made didn’t bring me happiness. Seeing those guys and girls at the hotel treating me so special and not knowing they were only making $10 a day. I didn’t even get the same treatment at the Ritz. I told myself I can live and spend my money anywhere in the world I would spend my money in the Philippines. Best decision I’ve ever made.

It's in our culture to respect the older person in general while other countries generally shove their elders in nursing homes and that alone speaks volumes. I feel really bad especially for old people with dementia being surrounded by strangers, it's a terrible combo. @10:20 The one thing that concern me is the more americans come, especially the more financialy free ones, the higer the price will go. It's simply the rules of supply and demand. The more americans, the more pricer it becomes. Next thing you know, the locals can't afford to stay on thier own land. I pray the Philippines dont end up being like Mexico.

There will not be enough Americans to move the real estate price up. Besides, the Americans settling in the Philippines will eventually build his own house so they will be out of the rental market. It is the Chinese who were able to push the real estate rentals in Metro Manila during the POGO (another term for the online Chinese casino) boom during the time of Duterte. They usually decide to buy or rent properties in a very short time and they are willing to pay a lot more than the existing market price. A lot of locals were priced out of the market because of the Chinese. Luckily covid happened and a lot of POGO companies closed shop. Real estate rentals went back to normal after they left.

In reality foreigners travel and live all over the world. The Philippines has American roots and many of our military serviced in the Philippines. I agree that loneliness is one of the major reasons. Unfortunately people bring their problems with them and those individuals problems will surface. Most of us are good people but life has its challenges and we all deal with those challenges differently. I have a British friend who is in Duma now deciding where life is going to take him. It’s also easy to be a bum, feel important, survive and just about everything else you want to be or do in the Philippines. There are also many pitfalls. As they say It’s up to you!

Yeah i personally think it's the English that's the star attraction (yeah the girls, the cost of living, the weather, etc is very important) but you can get that just about everywhere in S.E.A (like Thailand) The only thing that sucks about the Philippines in my opinion is the freakin Natural disasters they get (earth quakes, typhoons, volcano eruptions, etc)

I agree with you. 99%. I had 5houses in Florida all in different locations and all were damaged my typhoon ( hurricane ) at one point or another. I currently dealing with one now. Hit by IAN back in I think September. Just finally getting the insurance money to repair it. Ironically I was at ALONA BEACH, Bohol, Philippines when it hit. My neighbor text me and said “ Sam , I think part of your house is in my backyard lol. Thanks for joining us, Craig

I welcome your opinion. It is my understanding that lonelyness is a small porcentage of those. To some, these Islands reminds them of their own beginings in Life. The economy of the 60's, 70's & 80's. The infrastructure, the Locals, their Culture & respect for others. I could go On & On, but not needed, we all Live in the same place, right.?😀

I was 21 in 1986 when I was in the Navy stationed in Subic Bay. Lived out in town and enjoyed the experience. Went back in 2017 to see if that would be a good place to retire and not gonna lie, I felt 21 again. The slower pace, the music, etc... Except for people looking down on their phones of course 😂 I'm retiring in the Phils 10 October. Looking forward to it, unfortunately the US has lost it's natural mind and I'm done. Counting down....

Just watched and subscribe to your Site. Must say especially as you are an ex US pat now living in the Philippines, this was one of the best I've watched on experts living in the Philippines. Like you Dumeguete is one location I have in mind. Like you I'm divorced, no ties, financially independent but lacking something, loneliness certainly comes close but as a single child I've learnt to live alone and minimal or as now no real friends other than my two grown up sons. I'm in the UK right now and minimalizing so I can come out to the Philippines by the New Year for six months. Still plenty to get organized and unsure what events happening in Israel and Gaza will effect flights and future travel especially if Other Countries it involved. But hopefully I will make it out by January 2024 latest, I too enthusiast VBlogger/Podcaster so maybe our paths might cross. Keep up the good work.

Sam, i am American interested in moving to the Phillipines later this year. I have never been there. Do you offer consulting to Americans about the do's and don'ts, reasonable expectations, nice places to visit, and potential good places to live there, etc. If yes, is there a way to contact you such as an email to discuss further ?

Living in the US must be really bad when they always mention that the friendliness and hospitality in the Philippines is so much better. Life is what you make in your own country or abroad. I came to the Philippines in the 80th met my wife and married now since 30 plus years and I always will be a Kanno. I didn't run away from my native country because my job brought me here. After so many years living in Asia it's almost not possible going back because the western countries changed a lot in a direction l don't like to live in. Most of foreigners come because the weather, cost of living, freedom of living, less regulations, nice local people and less foreigners.... The last time I met a white person was 3 years ago because wherel live I am the only white guy....

Sam, I totally agree with you 100%. I am an American and ALL of the things you describe and said apply exactly too me. I did not realize until i did an analyse of what you said how lonely i was and it really was the reason i came to the Philipines. I met my girl friend on a dating site and came here to be with her. She is 33. I still work but essentially that is only contact that i have with other people. I am divorced, a grandfather, live alone and i really don't have a life. I don't know what is going to happen because i don't think i want to get married. Thanks for opening my eyes!
