This is why Tool's music ages so well, is still good or gets better year after year. Even Aenima holds up 25 years later, and Lateralus is still one of the best albums ever recorded imo. This is because Tool are not connected with any genre. No other band has their style, and they throw in songs like this, a damn drum solo. The music seems to get better, I notice more and more details every listen. It sounds different, and I hear different notes and lines depending on the sound system. It never gets old because they are not part of a "scene" or genre. In the early '90s they had some "grungy" feel in there but were never grunge. In the late '90s/early '00s they were as heavy as nu-metal bands and appealed to many of those fans, but were far from being "nu-metal". They are a unique art-experience, that's what they are first and foremost. Not "metal", definitely "rock", but they are artists first and their music is an experience in art, more than just "music". That's why it will never sound outdated.
