You did well ToolScouter! I don't know much about drafting, but that looks like one very nice set. I used to work for a Municiple gov't years ago. In the City yard there was a rack that contained several of those glass oil jars for adding oil to company vehicles. Can't tell you how often I've regretted not trying to obtain one of them before they were discarded. Thanks for the look see! 🙂👍

I agree with you. I think the drafting set is pretty good. I did some basic drafting in high school classes and found it to be a lot of fun. Now computers do it all. I can remember as a kid seeing some of the old metal cans punctured with a spout and then thrown away. I wish I had them now. This oil jar with a spout I feel was really cool. It grabbed my attention the first time I saw it. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great week.

That "spanner wrench" looks like a folding model of what we used in the fire department to tighten hose couplings. We called it a "spanner".

What is great about the drafting set is that you really were interpreting and transferring the data often directly from a prototype object or another drawing to paper so it could be documented or used say in producing the object by several workers. Now of course design work like that is all done on computer. To mass produce drawings they had to be drawn by draftsman.

What you say makes a lot of sense. the compass that has two points would be perfect for transferring measurements. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us and hope you have a great week.

The instrument with a needle point at one end one leg and a tweezer like apparatus at the end of the other leg (around 10:11 in the video) appears to be a "Standard 6-inch side-screw spring bow pen" used to draft with ink (kind of like a fountain pen). The instrument around 8:14 appears to be a 6-inch flat pattern compass and the one at 8:43 is a set of 6-inch flat pattern dividers. The instrument in your hand at 8:52 appears to be the lengthening bar used to allow the compass to draw circles up to about 10 inches in diameter. The instrument at 9:21 is a ruling pen used to ink straight lines and noncircular curves. The instrument at 10:12 is a small standard side-screw springbow inking compass.

That is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. I have seen ink plume tips, but did not know what this was used on these kinds of instruments. I feel very fortunate to have been able to pick this up and finding such a complete set at a secondhand store. Thanks again for sharing with us and hope you have a great week.

Great video. Yes, that's called a spanner wrench for use with collar fittings with a notch. Love that screwdriver as uncomfortable as it may be to use and have to marvel at the condition of the case on that drafting set.

The Gulf jar was used with bulk oil at service stations long ago. Usually displayed in racks by the pumps. The cased set is for drafting before computers took over, seems in great shape.

I think it’s great when you can find old canisters that were used wayback when. Glass and metal storage canisters always grab my attention. I understand what you’re saying about the drafting set. I was in high school when computers were taking over the way to do mechanical designs I took classes in drafting using a pencil and a rule. Three dimensional technical drawings were some of my favorites. Today the computer will rotate the image so you don’t have to draw dotted lines to show hidden images. Thanks so much for coming by and hope you have a great week.

Maybe the tweezer like tips on the compasses are for dipping in ink?

I was wondering if it was made to hold the tip ofa plume. I can see what you’re saying though, about it holding ink in the gap. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Hope you have a great week.

@@toolscouter Same here! I had drafting for four years in highschool. My senior year the school bought three computers for CAD. So the teacher handed me a manual and said "Here figure this out and take good notes for me so I can teach it next year!". Then I had CAD classes at Penn State and that is what got me hired into the job I have had for over 25 years.

You got some nice thing. The Gulf bottle is cool, and the German tools are very nice, I remember using a tool which I believe was called a spanner while I was in the military, but not sure what it was for,. I think we used it on large nuts that had slots in them for the wrench to fit in, That was some time ago.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I have heard from firemen and military personnel about the spanner wrench. Sounds like there were quite a few uses for them. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.

The Bottle is a vintage oil bottle. Fill it with bulk oil. the wrench with the swivel head I thought it was a spanner wrench. The Champion spark plug gap tool is a good find. The German compasses wow! Good day picking. Sometimes when I am in a store looking at stuff, I turn around and look at what is behind me. Different perspective.

I've got a similar set of drawing instruments but from Eugene Dietzgern Co. The tip you asked about is for Ink. Basically a rudimentary ink pen.

That’s great. Thanks so much for letting me know about the ink pen I might have to give it a try someday. First, I’ll have to find an ink well. Thanks for coming by the shop and hope you have a great week.

The drafting tool with a black handle and “tweezer” ends is a ruling pen. That is, one would put a drop or two of India ink between the two blades. Then, the screw adjusts to the width the user wanted, and you can then draw your line (typically with a straight edge). The compass with the same ends does the same thing, only for inking circles.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
You the viewers always help me out. Thanks so much for that information. Come by again soon and have a great weekend.
@jodydoakes8754Ай бұрын
That black handled thing in the drafting set that looked like small tweezers is a actually a pen used by a draftsman for making ink drawings, instead of pencil lines. Ink is placed between the two blades and is held by capillary action. The screw adjustment is to change the width of the lines made by the pen. Get it too wide and disaster ensues with a big ink blotch on your beautiful drawing.

C spanners, also known as adjustable hook spanners or hook & pin wrenches, are high-quality hand tools designed for loosening retaining rings and adjusting chains. These specialist spanners incorporate steel roll pins that allow the jaws to adjust to suspension fastness. Also handy for loosening water filters.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thanks for all of this great information. I like your last suggestion. We have a water filter that came with a plastic wrench and it’s a pain. I might have to employ this wrench the next time I change the filter. Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you have a great week.

Your right but the chisel is called a packing iron, used for packing okum in the preparation of a lead pour joint. The tighter the okum the better the joint. I have used it and all the other caulking tools many a time. Thanks for showing your tool haul.

Nice video. Can you help me? I just bought at the flea market a Iltis-Canada Ox Head Garant made in West Germany axe. 3 or 3 1/2 pd head. Original handle, some damage from an overstrike, but the head is in great shape. No mushrooming, no use as a hammer. What are your thoughts about a selling price?
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Sounds like you got a really neat little tool. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one of those. My best recommendation would be to put that information in to eBay or Etsy and just see what peoples asking price is. At least that’s where I would start. Sorry I can’t be of more help but good luck on your search. Have a great week?
