I am 53, I got hooked back when they started and have enjoyed the ride. I liked them early and kinda stopped listening, then my son who rememebered those times got back into it. It was funny my daughter was actually scared of their videos, my son would watch like 20 feet away trying to figure out what was up... My daughter was heck no I am gone... SHe was only 6... My daughter had different tastes, so to be fair I listenened to my share of Tool and the Bee Gees... Which for me was great... But then my son started playing the violin and later guitar and bass due to this love. he now have 5 guitars, he plays everyday and uses it to unwind... He works a ton, he has been in a few band but he uses his music to chillax.

That intro was iconic, you hear it once 10 or 15 years ago and then listen to it again now and it's not even a question; that's Tool! A lot of their music just makes a deep impression on your memory. And I think I know how he changed his voice back and forth, at first it was like he was singing through a bullhorn with a CB radio microphone giving it that tunneled, tinny-sound before switching up to a regular mic at full blast. P.S. funny fact, MTV and VH1 had to change the song title before broadcasting it because everyone knew what 'Stinkfist' meant (sexual fisting) so they had to call it 'Track 1' though presenters often held up a fist with a little smirk like "You know what time it is..."

This entire album is deep and dark with many, many layers. The more you listen to it the more layers you peel back. Album change my life and would be the CD i would choose if stranded on a deserted island , every single song on it is incredible. This song uses sexual innuendo as a metaphor into societies desensitization of sex, violence and everyday woes. Other songs talk about evolution, molestation, abuse, backstabbing, etc. Its a deep trip down a dark hole but in a mind awakening sense that makes you glad you went on the journey.

This is still my favorite Tool song after all these years and it’s still their best music video. The use of make up instead of stop motion or CG holds up better today. In case no one mentioned before, the guitarist Adam Jones did all their music videos and worked a bit on the first Jurassic Park back when it was gonna be stop motion dinos before Spielberg went the CG route.

Here a how you truly understand the mastery of Maynard James and tool. Pick any song, close your eyes, and visualize the instruments and Maynard's voice as wavelengths. Then you have a visual representation to complete the 🔧 trifecta. Mind, 3rd eye sight, and audible all on one plane layered together from start to finish.

This song is about overstimulation and desensitization. The vocal style Maynard uses for the verses is one of his nasal sounds, probably muffled a bit digitally. This song came out a few years before Disturbed found any success, I haven't listed to much disturbed but they may be a bit infleunced by Tool. My favorite Tool songs are Lateralus (which you already reacted too) and Wings for Marie pt2.

You're spot on with your observation about his vocals. For this song he uses a megaphone quite a bit and during live shows he doesn't stand in front for any performance. He stands in back, near the drummer. The spotlights are either on the guitarist or bassist. No focus is on him at any point during their concerts. All shadows.

1--No, you're not wrong about the intro. 2--I always thought his vocals sounded as if they'd been recorded through a phone line. 3--Entirely possible that Doug Draiman was influenced by Maynard's vocals. 4--Considering the title is "Stinkfist," the lyrics are more than a little dark. 5--You should check out the rest of this album, and the rest of Tool's output, if you like the musical stylings on this song. Tool is definitely progressive, musically and lyrically. 6--That whole entire album is my favorite, and I love all of their stuff. 7--My favorite Tool song is Forty-six & 2, which is also on this album. If you choose to react to this video, I recommend this particular video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipvEZ5KeadGHbKM It not only has the lyrics, but a pretty thought-provoking explanation of the song's meaning.

Stinkfist is about the evolution of Hollywood and television and the social borders and limits that have been pushed over the last 30 - 40 years. that's what's meant by finger deep, knuckle deep, elbow deep... just keeps pushing further and further. I could go line-by-line through the song but if you think about it in that context as you're listening to or reading it, it starts making more sense and lays the groundwork for how to understand his other material. He purposely makes his personal stories general so everyone can have their own interpretation but as far as what he personally meant? .... he said it in an interview, that's the reason I knew.

The vocal sound you were describing at the beginning is "compressed". Live he uses a megaphone to accomplish a similar effect occasionally. I've seen Maynard with perfect circle, puscifer, and tool multiple times. Hes one of only 2 singers ive ever seen able to make the girl I brought to the show actually cry. Listen to Parabol ( intro song ) and then Parabola. Oh... my... god. Theyre on Lateralus. Amazing.

Parabol & Parabola (one is more of an intro to the latter). And then my personal favorite is The Patient. Oh shoot!! You already did The Patient!! I'm stoked to see your reaction. Off to that video!!

From the same album 'H', and 'jimmy'. Incidentally, stinkfist is mainly about human desensitisation, "there's something kinda sad about...." etc. Metaphoric. A good fisting by the 24hour media. Where back in the day a murder would be shocking, now we practically channel surf right by. It's not that we don't care, it's worse than that. It used to take a finger to shock us, now, all the way to the shoulder and we feel nothing. Used to cover this in a band, singing it always made me cry. #tool are good souls, though sometimes naughty. #PeaceLoveLight.

Maynard has been known to use a megaphone live as a poster had mentioned. He either used a megaphone in the studio or used a vocal effect in post production or something to get that effect. Tool pre dates Disturbed so it's more Drainman sounds like Maynard than Maynard sounds like Drainman. Tool is in a unique category in metal. They don't follow trends and have always stood apart from the other bands. You know Tool when you heard them. PinkMetalHead if you like Tool you must take a listen to their Zepplin cover of No Quarter. Listen to the original first and you'll appreciate the creativity Tool used in that song. It is sheer inspiration. You also might enjoy older Opeth. Blackwater Park comes to mind. I have a few other suggestions Dig by mudvayne ( one of the best gutteral screams in metal is in the intro to that song) Darkness Within by Machine Head, really good tune Bleed-Meshuggah( these guys are gods and Thomas Hakke is an insane drummer this song is a lesson n stamina for sure) Anything by Iron Maiden if you wanna go back to the roots Number of the Beast is a good example Wait and Bleed by slipknot. A very intense song but catchy as shit.

Verse vocals is whats called "crooning"..its a different resonance made popular in the 1930's...he has many different voices(different registers)..its also distorted and with a mid to highend EQ

It's a megaphone he uses on his voice. I've seen him use it multiple times in concert, and he has mentioned it in interviews. It's a small megaphone, maybe 1/4 the size of a normal one. He holds the mic at arms length or stands back a bit from the stand.

A little food for thought regarding Maynard's use of lyrical ambiguity when attempting to derive a songs meaning: As deep thinkers, ( as many TOOL fans are ) you can understand that the message in his lyrics is focus on technologies of this modern age we happen to be experiencing reality in. Namely, television ( this was before internet was a massive influence, i.e. its infancy) and motion pictures. Now deeper still, is the interesting fact that we've all ( if we're conscious of it or oblivious,) had to adapt to receiving our desired feelings from outside electronic projections. No longer in the I intimate, tight-knit indigenous existence we once enjoyed; and where- no human imagined the need for a word like "Freedom", life had a ora of wonderment and awe, existence was understood and revered in its place among the planetary bodies. Today, we have lost a large part of what made us truly human throughout the millennia of yesteryear: without prey, we pray on each other, without nature we go to zoos or view a metallic & plastic box emitting radio frequencies, to intake what we are starving for; and without true knowledge, we are like lamb to the wolves......and without truth, love and a real sense of what is truly sacred.....we are doomed. Jesus... I got a bit off track there and tangential is an understatement. Sorry about that digressive slide from the focal; so Maynard has a real affinity for ambiguous, and metaphorically cryptic lyrics, in this case, shrouded in sexual innuendo: the Fist Fuck. And like he says ( while roasting the modern technocratic (ally) controlled, concrete covered, consumer-based human Zoo by design. Funded by the Un - illuminated psychotic architects plaguing our planet and a threat to all life existing on it ) in the song anima : ..."try an read between the lines".. P.s. Or I'm simply insane?......forgive me....peace.

The first track on Tool’s 1996 album Ænima. The theme of this song is about how people will take things to the extreme for pleasure by using “fisting” as a metaphor. Because of this, radio and TV stations were not allowed to say the title of the track on the air. They would instead call it “Track #1.” One MTV VJ at the time, Matt Pinfield, the station’s metalhead, would sometimes send a signal to the fans by waving his fist in front of his nose when introducing the song.

This song and prison sex are my favs for early Tool. Funny enough Ive known this song for over a decade and never read the lyrics....it's vivid and somewhat hilarious. I would suggest the songs: Schism Wings for marie pt 1/10,000 days pt 2 Grudge The Patient Vicarious The pot Anemia Prison Sex Disposition Tick and Leeches

It was a game changer for the band. I have one comment on the quality of you videos. The music is distorted on your videos, your voice is clear. It may be the volume your playing the music in your room. Keep up the good work😳
