Penetration with a catapult is not impressive on whole chickens, I doubt a lead ball would barely penetrate gel, if it did not just bounce off. I get about 1 to 2 inches on the chickens. Lead balls from a hand catapult do their damage by concussion. Just the denim would stop the lead projectile, as I use a towel for a backstop on my indoor target. After 100's of lead and steel balls it only gets frayed. I sometimes carry one for less lethal, a half inch steel ball to the groin will put down most attackers at a distance where pepper spray is useless. These little 22 guns may be weak, but they are still lethal when the shot is placed properly. A slingshot to be honest is only good for fun, or a meal if you can hit small game in the head.

A 60 grain bullet and 650 feet per second? That would definitely rain on your parade if it hit your body anywhere. ( Especially up your nose, as the NAA is expected to be utilized)

I appreciate the gentleman who donated these rounds and I appreciate you for taking the time to T&E them for us. While it did not come with the belt buckle, that looks exactly like my NAA, barrel length and all. I keep it loaded with this round and always wondered how deep it would go. As I have said many times in other places, I love the workings of these tiny revolvers, but with most of them I own, where NAA drops the ball, is with the barrel. Shallow, uneven, or non existent rifling; mis-,shapen and uneven muzzles, are common. As such, keyholing with these tiny guns is common. Keyholing is unacceptable due to it making accuracy impossible and it has a negative impact on penetration, which is necessary if these tiny guns and cartridges are to have a chance of penetrating deep enough to slow an attacker down. In the gun I carry these rounds in, a few years ago, when my vision was better, I could keep all 5 rounds in the torso of a B-27 silhouette target at 25 yds. I used to joke that given the length of the bullet, I could impale an adversary to the wall and make an escape.

Haha those little NAA Derringers are adorable, but damn near impossible to shoot! My dad used to have a .45LC/.410 2 shot model. Could barely get two fingers on the grip. The trigger was the weirdest thing ever produced. You had to pull almost straight down (think more of a "start your index finger apart from your middle finger and close the gap between them to fire" motion). Oftentimes, we'd bring it to the range, send a silhouette out to 7 yards, and take bets with anyone shooting on the range to try and hit the target at all with it. We won a few bucks almost every time we brought it lol. Nobody could hit shit with the damn thing. Good memories!

I have 16.5” Volquartsen “running bore” barrel on one of my 10/22s. I think twist is 1-9”, but anyway the barrel was designed specifically for the sniper sub sonic round. It clocks right at ~1000fps, so it must be a very tight bore. Accuracy is superb. Just under 1/2 MOA. I don’t have high speed camera to check but the holes in paper say bullets are very stable. It is a hammer! Full penetration on a coyote head or chest at 150y. I’ve never considered expansion necessary or even desirable on 22 rimfire, 25 auto or 32 auto. I just want reliable penetration when using those calibers. Tools, once again an outstanding and informative video!

You need to do the coconut test. The best use of these little guns in close up head shot, which they are perfect for. The performance for a heavy bullet with a smaller powder charge is in my opinion impressive. If it can penetrate a skull 6 inches it is enough to immediately stop a threat. 22 magnum air rifles have stopped wild pigs with headshots with very light pellets, so the weight of those bullets should do the same to a human skull.

That Aguila 60gr SSS is actually kind of impression from Papa Smurf's revolver. It develops the same energy from a shorter barrel than a .25acp and with greater sectional density. It may not penetrate as far due to the single tumble from a lengthy bullet but should still put a hurting on an assailant. Far from ideal for defense by anyone's standards, but surprising nonetheless and likely a decent "get off me" piece. I was expecting something closer to the 400 fps range.

Great video. Those were designed for sniping with a rifle. A 9 inch twist is necessary. You can get one for the 10/22. Range was 200 meters and could penetrate a human skull at that distance. I shot these in a number of 22lr rifles and pistols. They were accurate at 25 yards but no further. The standard twist for the 22lr is 16 inches. Saw a test with no clothing over the gel and from a Beretta M21. The bullets went in 10 inches and tumbled nicely. Velocity was 750 fps.

In light of my parents own experience with the NAA, it should be said when doing the following: 1) Cocking the Hammer. 2) Removing the Cylinder Pin. (Btw....the Cylinder easily drops out.) 3) Realigning the Cylinder and the Pin back into place. 4) Getting the Hammer Anvil to drop into the Safety Notch. Doing These 4 Steps WILL .... Require Some Decent Finger Strength And Finesse. It's not going to be as cut and dry, for a lot of people, as shown in these YT videos, especially for females and the elderly. You'd definitely be better off with their “RANGER II Break-Top” or “SIDEWINDER” features a “swing-out” style cylinder. They're also all similar in size. Recommend Federal Punch ammo.

I used to shoot those out of my old Remington 512X on woodchucks. As long as it was above freezing they stabilized enough to shoot plenty accurate enough but when they hit, they'd yaw and often leave exits looking more like that of a broad head. They worked extremely well for discrete pest control.

I've used these for years in a Beretta 21A tip barrel pocket pistol - a design notoriously finicky about what it will work with (mine won't feed Federal "Punch"). The "Sniper" case is a .22 short. I've always felt more comfortable with that, because it's less to hang up getting out of that extractorless 21A. They shoot to point of aim @ 7yd - one of the few loads that will out of that gun. I've always figured that slug would tumble, and to me that's a good thing. I've found "snipers" to shoot better out of shorter barrels than longer barrels. Didn't group at all well out of three different 24" barrels, good out of 16", 10", and 7.5" barrels. I realize twist rate is an issue. Don't remember if I ever tried them out of a revolver.

These were quite popular here on the Gulf Coast when they showed up. A lot of LEOs used them in their BUGs. I see they weren't _too_ bad, at least from a decent barrel length. They definitely tumble as expected. They were _very_ popular for folks with suppressors, assuming, as you noted, they had the right twist rate. Good friend of mine is an NFA dealer. He had a can on a Ruger 77/22 and we'd hear the firing pin hit the case, maybe a slight hiss as it left the muzzle, and then all we heard thereafter was "Whup-whup-whup" as the bullet tumbled in the air because Ruger rifles at the time didn't have a fast enough twist rate for them, LOL. Same guy put an after-market barrel on a suppressed Ruger rifle and used it to take coyotes around town.

Tumbling could leave a pretty nasty wound, especially that extra long bullet. If it made it into a lung or liver tumbling, one could expect vascular damage. Most 22 lr "solids" tumble if hitting any real resistance. My old wet paper tests were about 100% tumblers. Longer bulletswould be more prone to tumble.

I've heard they're pretty accurate if you can get them stabilized. The problem is they need a fast twist rate like you'd find on an AR, but most .22lr rifles have much slower rates.

@@ToolsandTargets Right. I was surprised your little NAA did as well as it did. No idea what their twist rate is. Your Taurus actually did as it should with a 1:10 twist, so cudos to Taurus. I don't think my Ruger would do that well.

I tested them years ago in a suppressed Ruger 10/22 and discovered they were very inaccurate due to the twist rate being too slow to stabilize them. I keep Federal Punch in my .22LR NAA mini revolver - designed to penetrate deeply even out of a tiny barrel. I have one of those buckles (and the skeletonized one too), but honestly I found I like the folding holster grip. Great test, Brian! I actually like these odd little rounds but I modify them for use in my NAA .22. I have a jig I use to trim a fair bit of lead off the nose, about 20 gr or so. The flat nose and lighter weight seem to give this ammo a bit of a boost in performance. I don't own anything that will stabilize these bullets so they usually tumble right off, which is good because it causes more disruption than just the RN bullet. Truth be told, I often have trouble recovering these bullets since they usually penetrate very well. Overall a strange bullet indeed! They tend not to be very accurate as well, due to needing a much higher rate of twist to stabilize them. Agulia used to call these the Sniper SSS. Supposedly they do well out of supressed rifles (from what I have read). Always fun to play around with, that's for sure but I don't know about any practical applications! Cheers, jc

I have talked to several people that has been shot from a 22LR, all of them have said, it's NOT a joke, it hurt. I do not have a problem carrying my NAA, easy to carry, and un-noticeable, you couldn't see it until its too late. Keeping things in perspective, they are meant for up close and personal. It is NOT going to over penetrate and cause collateral damage. THE ONLY problem with 22LR, is its "misfire" due to primer ignition, if 22 manufacturer was to resolve this issue, MORE people would carry 22LR for personal protection. I new one guy that got shot in the back of the head at point blank range, the bullet did not penetrate his skull, it went between skull and scalp, came out the top of his mouth, and knocked all the food out of his mouth, along with all his front teeth, top and bottom, he was incapacitated.

After doing a chrono test with the black widow 2.5" I see no use for the 22 mag in that gun other than versitality. Maybe it was 20 fps faster than the 22 lr. I think the best naa configurations would be a black widow LR only so the frame is shorter and have a 3 to 4" barrel. And classic wood grips. It's a cool test , I take it the tx .22 is for subsonic 40grainers by design? The case is a .22 short. From a long barrel , 1-10 to 1-7 would be the area to check for twist rate. Has .22 LR changed recently ? The bullet diameter used to be .223 but I am seeing some now measured at .224 like a .22 mag and most .22 centerfires. That could explain why the bullets have Wear ,with most in the oldest design and least in the newest. I suspect it has been done for all the 5.56 to .22lr conversions . If the ammo changed the conversions will get much better accuracy and more consistent velocity. New guns would be built with the .224 inch bore , Old guns in good repair will not suffer from it . .308 Palma tight bores are 2 one thousands smaller than standard .308 . Also The Ruger mini 30 has a .308 diameter bore last I knew and 7.32x39mm is actually 31 caliber. .310-.312 diameter.( The .303 British and 7.62x54r are also .31 caliber) So bullet compression is a normal thing and that would only be 1 one thousandth for the .22lr. Personally I think the sss round would benefit from a situation similar to the 8.6 blackout with it's 1 in 3 twist . Does Kreiger still make 1-6 twist for .223/5.56 for 90 grain bullets? That might be a winner .
