Yeah, Libby wasn’t angry or aggressive at all, really. She was far more chill and relaxed. That’s why she was a good foil to Cindy and Sheen, who were so quick to anger and energetic, respectively. I loved Libby so much as a kid, her bangs-over-one-eye look was formative to me as a child.

I've been holding the torch for this show for so many years! I watched Co3 religiously, yet still haven't met a friend who watched it when they were a kid, even my bestie who watching like only CN and is an animator. I think Class of 3000 shaped my love for jazz and was the reason I stuck with chorus from 3-8 grade. I was dropped from the course accidentally when transitioning to high school, but ended up in TV/Film Production instead, which is my current job; Happy accident. That aforementioned bestie was my partner in 2 years of that class, so my love of the art of animation grew even greater and made me really realize how special Class of 3000 was! Fantastic music, characters, morals, aesthetic, and vibe :) I may have been a chubby little white boy, but I spent my earliest years in Springfield, MA and spent a lot of summers and time with my predominantly black family, having cookouts, listening to music, so the vibe really brought me home during those first few years away. I really love this show and the video :) Sad to see it go due to a lawsuit.

The part about how the sole black female characters in cartoons are portrayed was so on point omg. I didn't grow up with this show but I saw that how Tamika was designed, immediately had an idea of how she was gonna act and was pretty much right (wasn't expecting the jokes about her weight but unfortunately I'm not surprised). It's crazy how cartoons having more than one black character and especially more than one darker skinned poc girl as a recurring character is still a relatively new concept. Long story short we need more variety in the black girls we see on screen, sincerely a black girl who likes cartoons
@undeadblizzard2 жыл бұрын
It called a double standard. If POC have isn't angry they are weak and passive. If they are angry even in the right they are forceful. I was borne to African Immigrants. My parents weren't Rich but they can could afford to raise us in The Good Neighborhood. I speak well and pratice Zen. I have been accused of not speaking of been black. I like Tom Jones. We are all the same to the cops.
@leavemealone8022 жыл бұрын
Bro, I have never realized that before Tariq pointed out. It makes sense why I never related to the black girls even though I am one, but also admired them I agree that we need more variety, but I am also glad they didn't gave them a personality that gave black girls a bad rep (at lest for me) Every time I saw black girls on TV, I never saw myself in them, but I found alot of courage thanks to them. Guess Penny from Proud Family was the ONLY Poc character I saw myself in it. Sorry, I guess I just wanted to express the positive look I had on this characters, even though I agree with everything that you and Tariq said

Maybe if their wasn't only one way black people acknowledge as black then maybe there'd be more portrayals. You know at the time of a lot of animations pointing out the "angry black woman" trope, i did find it weird that there wasn't a reason for Tamika to be angry all the time, but I want to say it goes with her all around character for what instrument she plays. You have this loud, aggressive character who plays the harp, a soft and delicate sounding instrument. When I made the comparisons to everyone else's instrument, it's kind of the same. Lil D is hyper and loud so he gets the drums, Madison is kind of whimsical and cheery so she plays violin, and as hardcore as Tamika is, her playing the harp means she has a softer side to her, but doesn't show it as much. it's a theory, but I do wish it was touched on more I guess. Not a "show, but don't tell" but more of a "shown but not explained enough"

But issue was she said she had to be hard and didn't want people to know about her other side and spent the entire episode hiding her boyfriend and how soft she is.

I'm glad you're talking about Class Of 3000 the show deserves more love. On the topic of the angry black girl cliché while I do agree all black women don't need to be written that way I personally don't think it's a problem if a black female character happens to be written that way I only think it's a problem if every time a black female is in a show that's how she acts or if all characters within a show act the same way. As for Libby from Jimmy Neutron I honestly never got vibes from her that she was a angry black woman she was sassy at times and sometimes antagonistic toward Jimmy, Carl and mostly Sheen but she never came off as straight up angry to me.

Definitely agree. I took Libby as just not taking anybody's nonsense and standing firm in her beliefs and ideals. She wasn't flaky or wishy washy, but she wasn't one to keep her mouth closed if she felt the issue was important enough to have her voice in it. She was also a great friend. The way they did her hairstyle in the Egyptian mummy episode was really awesome, too. Especially because she had a more straightened style before the dreads came in. She is an incredibly well-rounded and fleshed out character. Definitely one of my favorites.

libby always seemed like the more calm one compared to cindy, imo? disclaimer i'm a white guy so the nuance is probably not smth i'm too tuned into i remember loving the episode where they went to egypt and libby changed her look after finding more about her ancestors, that felt so cool to me as a kid

I disagree about Libby entirely, man. She could get aggro, but she wasn’t at all like Tamika. In fact she was usually the more calm one between her and Cindy. Hell she was the more calm one among all 5 of the crew.

The way the series introduced me to music, importantly taught me lessons through black influenced genres like funk and jazz from the South, it really still resonates to me till this day. And I can’t be the only one who played the FunkBox game back on the old CN website making my own songs.

I won't let this flop, this was so fuckin great!! I love Class of 3000 and i really hope this video blows up cause I want more folks to not only see this show, but see how well you've represented it, with the music, the visuals, the facts etc. You and Mann killed it!
