a24 is by far one of the heaviest and bravest productions. They aren’t afraid to make risks but, that doesn’t mean all movies are great. I always appreciate your reviews :)

That's why I love A24. Not bc I think they r always good but bc they take risks and r little by little bringing auteur and indi cinema to the mainstream scene with good productions at a technical level. When I say I like A24, pple assume Im the typical person that defends them as a whole but nope, I also think they've produced bad films, and that's ok :)

This! Like, on this surface I know it’s so stupid and nonsensical (because, I mean, a dude gets turned into a walrus), but the whole movie is extremely disturbing to me in a way that a lot of other movies aren’t. The end scene where his friends visit him in the zoo and the walrus man just screams and screams while his friends walk away is one of the worst scenes I’ve seen in horror. Not to mention that the walrus man himself is really hard to look at for me. I’ve only seen a few scenes of the movie, but I will never watch the full thing because it freaks me out so much, lol.

@@KestellPlanet Same, I’ve watched Hereditary which definitely affected me, but not in the way that it seemed to everyone else. Tusk on the other hand, ludicrous & impossible as it is, chills me to the bone. (I too have only seen clips, I’d never ever watch it).

Yes! So true! It’s funny I was reminded of one of the reasons I love my husband so much because he watched tusk, loved it SO much, then made me watch it again with him. Sat through the entire thing again a day after he watched it. 45 minutes in I was like “what the fuuu…” and looked over at him with this huge grin on his face just loving it. He has such awesome and unique taste so I trusted him, and it was a damn ride

This is the first I'm hearing of Tusk, and this is an incredibly obvious comparison and might even be a direct homage, but it immediately made me think of Kafka's Metamorphosis. I remember some people in high school thinking it was goofy, but the absurdity of the situation is what is so terrifying. The characters witnessing the transformation and the audience are in the same position, and have the same kinds of extreme reactions.

Lmao I definitely have to agree with Sarah on this one. Even after watching and reading countless reviews explaining their interpretations, why they love it, and whatnot… it was still not enough for me to be like “OH! Well now I love it!” It’s too bad really, because they both acted so well in it and I went into the movie wanting to love it… but it just didn’t click/do anything for me.

My favorite is Hereditary, it's the boring answer, but it's just so immensely and immaculately well crafted that nothing else even compares, it actually gets scarier with every re-watch. My second favorite, however is Eighth Grade, which I would consider as horror adjacent just because of how goddamn uncomfortable it makes me, it instantly transports you to middle school, and every terrible experience you've had there. Bo Burnham is really good at just destroying you with deep emotional reactions.

@partycitydumpster
@partycitydumpster 2 жыл бұрын
I watched the original, then the directors cut, then the original again, so I'm pretty confident in saying I like the original better. I think the pacing holds you in suspense exquisitely, and the meandering in the directors cut allows you to get your bearings (ha) a bit too much which detracts from the overall experience imo. And Christian's shittiness started to feel a little heavy-handed in the added scenes iirc. But it's possible I need to give the directors cut another try because these are relatively subtle differences and might have just been my mood at the time.

There at the end you really nailed why I like Blumhouse movies more than A24. It's not that they're better movies; by and large, they really aren't. It's just that they satisfy that desire for entertainment I have more than A24 does. Complex thrilled-horror with nuanced visuals and themes has its place... but sometimes (most of the time) when I'm watching a movie to unwind, I just don't want it to get that deep and layered.

You should definitely watch Midsommar directors cut soon!! I also have it, and it made the movie even better than it already was (in my opinion of course). Without spoilers, the extra and extended scenes add a lot more context, especially with Christian and some of his motivation. The extra scenes are also cool, including one that’s during the night! I rewatched Blackcoats Daughter for the first time in years this past winter (I live in Minnesota so we get winter for like 5 months lol) and I watched it on a cold snowy night with a candle in the background and lights off and it really made that movie more atmospheric and really added to it!

I personally prefer the ambiguity between Dani and Christian in the theatrical cut and how we get to figure their relationship out on our own but I definitely agree that seeing more scenes with them together is quite effective and gives us a more in-depth look into Christian as a character. And I think the scene at the river in the directors cut is a really cool way of showing what the communion think of Dani but I still prefer it being less easy to figure out like it is in the theatrical version.

I really like horror movies that invite me to turn toward difficult affective experiences. I think the a24 movies are great but they don't necessarily scare me. They leave me feeling disquieted or malaise. For example, I really experienced a sense of dread and malaise after watching St. Maude. It wrecked me. I also love Babadook because it's all about grief, depression, and motherhood. The beautiful thing about it, is that the protagonist experiences a sense of resolution when she is able to integrate the babadook into her affective experience rather than turning away from her grief. And midsummer, wow, it's disquieting because you see her boyfriend just really gaslighting her, and I could tell it was crazy-making for her.

I only seen Midsommar & The Lighthouse 😂. Absolutely loved Midsommar, one of my favorite horror films this century. The Lighthouse I understand if you disliked it, I loved it. I just view it as two dudes going absolute insane, was very funny. I need to see Hereditary and The Witch.

I love hearing your opinions on these films because they are often hit or miss with A24. Also i love seeing Junji Ito in the background. I also like that A24 has been giving new directors and actors the chance to make something different

finished watching tusk just a couple of hours ago and can definitely say that I'm one of those people who see it as a dark comedy with horror elements to it. and I regret watching it alone without my friends bc YEAH it would be so much more entertaining to see their reactions and commentary 🤣

I went to the theater the opening weekend hoping for a super dark take on the fantasy genre and found myself in your same boat. I think that film required a certain level of knowledge of classical Arthurian literature and chiviry to begin the quest. Every shot of that film was stunningly beautiful and well acted but, I had to turn to youtube when I got home to find any understanding of what I just watched. Re-watching once The Green Knight has a home release and my new knowledge might help with greater appreciation later on.

I thought the director´s cut didn´t really add a whole lot. As a huge fan of Midsommar, it was cool to see the extra scenes, but I think the theatrical cut is tidier (and long enough as is)

My favorite horror A24 movies are The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Hereditary, with Green Room not far behind. And my fav. non-horrors are The Florida Project and Uncut Gems, with Moonlight also not far behind. *editing to add* ahh you know every time I think I don’t really love Midsommar and that it’s just a good but not great film I’ll see a clip like the one inserted in this video and want to take it all back and say it’s a fav. It’s just so beautiful!

Body horror disturbes me so much, I still think about tusk and want to cry, and I didn’t even watched the full movie, just the end with my sister because she was herself so disturbed that she needed me there to help her get through the end of it and traumatized me in the process lmao

I honestly don't see how its disturbing. I haven't seen it BUT A DUDE GETS TURNED INTO A WALRUS. That's so stupid I can't see how someone could be afraid, but I wouldn't know I haven't seen the movie

@@ChristianTurnes in theory IT DOES sound super silly! But like I said, the body horror its,,, gross tbh, how he LOOKS when he’s a walrus, the psychological trauma and damage that he goes through once he becomes the walrus, taking the comedic side of it apart, it’s pretty disturbing, the things he goes through and the final product

I would LOVE to know what your thoughts are on the green knight if you've seen it. I know it's not horror, but my husband and I went to go see it over the weekend and honestly, we spent like a good two hours after trying to figure it out. I can say from watching the trailer I couldn't tell what kind of movie it was, and when we walked out of the theater, I still couldn't tell. Lol would love your opinion on it, as I found it beautiful but perplexing

Hereditary is a beautifully crafted, meticulous movie, and probably the most effective horror that I’ve ever seen. That being said, I think I kind of agree with you (funny being that my name is also Sarah 😆). I only saw it once in theaters and have otherwise watched it broken up into scenes on KZbin because I have not been in a place since I saw it in theaters to sit down and put myself through that again. I usually have some sort of fun when I watch horror movies, as far as having fun from the adrenaline rush goes, but Hereditary actually made me cry and gave me an anxiety attack in theaters lol. I couldn’t handle the raw depiction of a family falling apart after tragedy because it hit too close to home for me. It was the first time that I personally was able to relate on a mental and emotional level with a horror movie and it was fucking taxing. So like I said, it was EXTREMELY effective in horrifying me, but not in the “I wanna keep watching this!” Way, in the “I’m horrified and exhausted and I want to go home and cry” kind of way 😅.

As an avid follower, someone who really values your opinion on horror and finds so much agreement with your lists... I implore you to watch Hereditary again... as soon as you can manage it. Watch it with a trusted support person, if it will help. There is SO much more on rewatches to delve into and unwrap, if you can do it. This more begs for multiple viewings as there is so much under the surface. Again, I do understand the emotional weight involved with very tense horror and how upsetting it can be.. the toll it can take. If you ever can conceive of watching it again, you will see an entire second layer.
