These patterns come in different formats. Some will be available as 'paper' patterns, meaning you will receive a physical item through the post. Some are only pdf's - meaning you will receive a download of the pdf files and will either have to print out the pattern pieces at home or order through a copy shop/printers. Some patterns will give you the option of either paper or pdf. Please be aware of this if you are placing an order.

In the 1950’s the Popit pattern was a simple square with self sleeves as part of the top. It is interesting to see them here again as the very same beginner pattern i used. We were still doing embroidery back then, so mine was embroidered with a simple flower on one shoulder. My youngest granddaughter paints designs and pictures on her clothes and jackets. She hates to sew, but is always re-designing her clothes or making costumes for cosplay! Fascinating.

My first sewing project was a disaster. I chose a very slippery satin-like material to make a top. I gave in and threw it in the naughty corner for about a year. I eventually tried again and made a Lou Box Top by Sew DIY which is great for beginners. I made it twice in a lightweight jersey fabric and I still love wearing those 2 tops. Lindsey Rae from Sew to Grow holds Fit to Flatter workshops. I took part in one of them here in Australia a couple of years ago and I know she runs them overseas too. She is very passionate about sewing and passing on her knowledge to others. I highly recommend attending these workshops when they are up and running again. She also has some You Tube videos which might help beginners.

These are great choices for beginners sewists and also great quick to sew patterns for the more experienced sewists. For those who are not comfortable downloading, printing, and taping together patterns, many pattern companies have beginner sewing patterns. The first thing I made for myself was was a mini skirt when I was about 7, no pattern just fabric and imagination. The first thing I made using a pattern, (and that I was allowed to wear to school), was an elastic waist skirt with a matching lined vest made out of red corduroy when I was 11. I recently found the pattern on etsy and made the same outfit for my 9 year old granddaughter.

When I retire in the next couple of years I’d like to join Skill share and learn some new things. Right now, as a high school teacher, when I’m not working, I’m sleeping. I’m trying to hang in there for another couple of years, but with all the strangeness going on, it’s hard! I love these patterns! I learned to sew when I was a little girl in 4-H. Our first garment was an apron-the old fashioned kind that just ties around your waist.

Great video. I have a few thoughts. Sewers fail when they think the pattern will fit out of the envelope. They won’t. Some suggestions on who to follow to learn fitting is key (Lynda Maynard, Sarah Veblen, Joi Mahone) or new sewers will get frustrated that their garments don’t fit. And waste precious money on nice fabric. Secondly, along the same lines, for someone to invest in a Skillshare class to learn to make a top that includes no bust darts is not right. I don’t care how boxy the top is, but Laura Casey should have included bust darts in her instruction for her “Sewing the Boxy Top” class. I mention this because it is discouraging to invest time and/or money for an online class that omits key info. I know you can’t cover everything in a video but a few suggestions on resources for fitting would have made this video an A+. Fitting is so hard. 5 years into sewing, I am getting closer but I still make 4 or 5 muslins before cutting into any nice fabric. This winter I have spent 100% of my time on the Vogue sloper. Almost done except for the skirt. Wish I had made that my first priority from the gitgo.

Thank you for making this list! I have made several patterns but I feel that I need to start from more basic patterns as past garments have not always turned out well. The New look patterns at the end look to be the most accessible to me.

If you are small framed and busty, I strongly suggest getting beginner patterns with custom cup sizes. The darts are not that hard,and the fit will be much better. The options here in a cotton will likely be tent-like and shapeless. You will be 😢 . The Ogden cami and cashmerette pattern with bust sizes won’t fit a small frame. I have learned the hard way and made a lot of tent like tops I won’t wear.

Great video thank you. I’ve been sewing for 4 years but still like a simple sew and prefer indie patterns which hold your hand through the process ☺️

Thank you so much for all this work to help new sewers get started and good choices I might add as well. It will encourage them to be successful for sure. I have made some of them myself. I also like the Cielo boxy top. I have made about 5 of them and wear them all summer long. Cheers!

Oh yes I did, thank you! I should have linked to it, so thank you for reminding me (I'll add it in the description box now). It's the Hazelwood Top by Tessuti and I really love it. One of my past vlogs shows it in detail. Here's the link to the pattern: www.tessuti-shop.com/collections/digital-download-pattern-tops/products/hazelwood-top-pattern

I would love it if you shared free patterns! Sewing can be very cost prohibitive...
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. I completely agree, sewing patterns, plus fabric, plus notions and machines make sewing quite prohibitive for many! I am actually planning a top 10 all on free patterns for that very reason, so I hope you stay tuned for that video. For this particular round up there is one pattern that is free, you do have to claim the free Skillshare trail, which can be cancelled and you wouldn't pay any money, so it would definitely be an option. I saw that you also commented on size inclusive patterns, however I can't see the comment any more. So I'm hoping that you watched on and realised that I actually tried really hard to be as inclusive as possible, using pattern companies who are known for being size inclusive, as I am very aware that people of all shapes and sizes, tastes and backgrounds may like to sew. Now, size inclusive AND free - that would be the goal, wouldn't it? I shall try my best to find some suggestions for my free pattern round up. But if you have some suggestions then I would absolutely love it if you could share so I can pass this information on to my viewers. Thank you so much! x

Brilliant suzie, I’ll definitely give the lotte a go and dig out the new look patter and hash tag it. My first things I made at school 49 years ago was an apron and head band for cookery class. I also had to chain stitch my name on it ✋go me 🤣🥰
