I just discovered your channel, loving it. During the early 90's when I was very young, got hired to work at Bloomingdale's as a counter manager for Guerlain, OMG every month I got tons of gratis from Guerlain, all the perfumes, Classic ones, Samsara, Jicky, Shalimar, I hated those fragrance felt like it was such a very old and mature scents, we considered it a grandma fragrances. I gave all my gratis away. I was really clueless, can you imagine if I still had the originals. Since then in the last 10 years, I have really appreciated the love of quality fragrance, and love of many flower scents. Love listening and learning, recently due to Covid got laid off, have started my little business of making beautiful candles and soaps. Currently working on a gorgeous Jasmine candle and soap, it has been difficult finding the scents. Love listening to what people love about Jasmine, it is such a complicated fragrance.

OMG. I am Iranian American. Greetings from San Francisco AGAIN! Just went to Shiraz (yes embarrassed to admit) for the first time in 2016. What a place; the gardens are as intoxicating as in Hafiz's poems. SO glad to have found you. Dying to see if you'll mention A La Nuit, Lutens. We talked about it only this morning. Of course you did. BTW, the reference to night may simply be that his jasmine smells more like a Night Jasmine plant, an actual variety of jasmine, vs. night as in dark. Night Jasmine is a nucturnal jasmine that only comes to life at night. I used to have two in my backyard, and it is a bit greener scent than the regular jasmine or star jasmine, yet another variety. My night jasmine flowers were a dead ringer for A La Nuit :).

I like jasmine to be light, bright and airy (as close to a soliflore). Loved the L’Occitane the vert au jasmin which was sadly discontinued. But so pleased to have found Fragonard Jasmin perle de the. It’s sad that no one really talks about Fragonard and other overlooked heritage brands (Ortigia is another which springs to mind). Lots of hidden gems out there and you don’t need to spend big bucks either.

I have two of the 15mL Hermessence discovery sets and I love, love, loved Cedre Sambac so much, I ponied up for a full bottle. I find if I spray it on skin the jasmine predominates, if sprayed on a shirt, it's the cedar. But somehow, one is never far away from the other and it manages to be both indolic and tart. It's interesting you have the vision of a mountain of jasmine, I do too. In my mind it takes me to a happy place, one without people. I like wearing it, it feels just a bit special. Unlike most of the other Hermessences, it says hello, but still retains the transparent quality of the line. It is a bit like the breeze on a warm summer's night. Possibly it's my favourite fragrance. Top five at least.

Hi Mr. P - Sujata here. Since I made that very first newbie comment below, I have acquired a bottle of Annick Goutal's Songes - (the EDP) - so I thought I'd listen to the segment on it above - again. You know, it's pretty strange - (btw, heat induced swoon is the perfect metaphor for this fragrance) - but all I get from it - is spices - the cumin, the black pepper, the cinnamon - and hardly a glimmer of the florals! From the first sniff, I'm a little girl again playing in the kitchen with bunches of pots and pans as my mum (now long gone) cooks up something mouth watering...I have been told that Songes the EDT is more floral and very different from the EDP which is heavier and heavier on the spices. But I'm also coming to the conclusion (from the expertise gleaned from these last hand full of months and my later life perfume journey!!!) that our olfactory senses are the senses most deeply connected to memory. We each smell the notes that we smell from a particular scent because each of our brains settles on first, those particular notes that are the most relevant to us given our individual experiences...

This is fascinating. Thank you so much for sharing, Sujata.

I'm a newbie subscriber and am truly enjoying these recordings of your live sessions. Your voice and your excellent articulation are both intoxicating - kind of like a superb perfume! After viewing a number of KZbin vids on it, I'm in a panic to get my hands on an original, 1989 bottle of Samsara EDP - the dark red bottle. I've decided it's something I just have to smell before I die! (I'm 61 but I hope I've got a bit of time yet...) I'm also South Asian American (American for a bajillion and a half years but was born in India) and I so totally love the kurta/shirt you're wearing here. Simply gorgeous! Keep up the good work, Mr. P ... you're a KZbin perfume reviewer gem!

@@Persolaise Oh, Mr. P! I just had to tell you (update you)! I've been researching for a long while and finally took the plunge today. I found/bought myself a relatively reasonably priced (given the market), lightly used, 75ml splash bottle - of the original Samsara - from a lovely lady who's husband bought it for her in Paris - at Guerlain's 1989 debut of Samsara! Mr. P! Another long comment to end this thread finally and lots of exclamations ahead! My purchase arrived today and has turned out to be, I think, an absolutely authentic, 1989 debut bottle of Samsara EdP! The batch code matches perfectly etc and I'm pinching myself on my good luck (2.4 oz left of the 2.5oz bottle - of the original Samsara EDP - to enjoy the rest of my days!). Beyond the pinching, an hour after dabbing some on, I'm also sniffing my wrists like a madwoman! At first scent, it smelled strongly animalic, but I wasn't concerned - (even today's formulations of Shalimar smell the same to me and the musks/civets of the 1980s must have been different than today?). Anyway - Holy Moly, Mr. P - the dry down!!! I honestly can't find the words myself but I read in an article somewhere that "Indian palaces always have a distinct smell - of wet wood - old books - and dried roses" - (so true) - and this is what Guerlain was aiming for - and, to me, at this moment, that's exactly what my wrists smell like! I feel like with each breath of this treasure of a fragrance that I take from hereon in, I need to bow deeply, to genuflect, to my Indian heritage! Ok - wow - sorry - I'm on a serious mad roll here but I really am done now. I've gone on so long in each message in this thread, however, I feel like it would only be polite to end by actually introducing myself - my name is Sujata - and to thank you so much for your patience, Mr. P! Take good care!

This really is a nice game, wearing the perfumes, while you are talking about it: Chanel N°5 Extrait. It's my favourite concentration (version from 2012), mine is very aldehydic, which I love, and dryes down to a flowery your-skin-but-better-skin. It would be great, if you could do a video about the different concentrations. The EdP seems to be the most citrusy (is this really a word?) one. Greetings from Germany.

Her favourite smell is Honour from Amouage, but as I have mentioned, it does not last very long. Alien is amazing, but everyone around her has it, so that one is not a good option. I was tempted to buy her a la nuit from SL, but it is almost impossible to find it nowadays. The first time it happened I couldn’t believe it was the perfume. So I tried, and tried and eventually accepted it’s not for me 😕 I passed it on to my sister for whom it was too grand.
