A couple responses: 1) Why not Megas/Z-Moves etc.? --> Sword and Shield aren't out yet, who knows, maybe they patch them in. Until they are released anything can happen (although I know it won't). 2) You can use all the other games to catch Pokemon in Gen III, they're at least programmed in! --> Not when they first came out. I played them then, and for years there was no way to get several Pokemon. Plus modern games can be patched, they could always add them in at some point. There may be a way to bring every Pokemon from Gen 7 into Gen 8. There will never be a way to bring Pokemon from original Gen 1/2 to Gen 3+.

Gamefreak is really not known for patching these games much historically speaking. It's a stretch to assume they would start now without them actively saying so.

I remember when ORAS came out and it was discovered that the Battle Frontier wasn't in, but I didn't really worry because "they could be patched in". Unless they come out and announce that's what they're doing, its best to assume there are going to be no content patches. Other than that, this was a good list, and I had the same reaction as you to my first time entering the Battle Frontier and how it quickly made me realize that there's so much more to Pokemon that I just didn't get even though I was the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn Champion. And it's depressing to see that in recent entries Game Freak wants to hide all of that complexity.

GIT GUD ENTERTAINMENT Sadly I got into the Pokémon scheme late and have only experienced the Vs. Seeker in Platinum. And even then it was annoying for me a bit since I had to wait a bit for my rebattles with trainers. Hopefully they do add it again, many leaks that could easily be false or true state that Sword and Shield will become much more difficult compared to the new games, and it will be as hard as Zelda Breath of the Wild. I don’t know how hard BOTW is, but it said it will be as hard as that.

Speaking of Battle Frontier, there was a really cool feature here in Emerald that I really want to return : Trainer Tutor. After getting some fame here, trainers appeared to ask your opinion on the Pokemon and Moves they used. Afterwards, you could play with them, or face them in the Battle Tower. And that's when it becomes great, since you could decide to ruin their team to make them easier to face here, or help them becoming the best they could.

Thank you for shouting out my video! That's the nicest thing any archrival has ever done for me :) Also, I can't stress how horrible completing the gen 3 dex is. A lot of people forget that FireRed/LeafGreen restricted post gen 1 evolutions (Crobat, Blissey, etc.) until you had the regional dex upgraded, and you also couldn't trade with RSE until you completed the entire post game. On top of that, there was no day/night cycle, so Umbreon/Espeon weren't available, which means you had to trade them to RSE or buy Colosseum/XD to get them.

yeah, but imagine if firered/leafgreen literally didnt have Crobat, Blissey, Umbreon, Espeon, ect in them at all. not just unavailable so you have to trade, but the data for them is gone and you have to wait a couple years for the next pokemon game to MAYBE have them. and if it doesnt... well, i guess you dont get to play with your favorite pokemon anymore.

@@Psyxe1 I mean that's literally what happened in gen 3. You had to buy emerald to get sudowoodo. Also the got rid of ditto until lgfr, so you or your friends didnt reset for a female starter guess you going to need to restart the game to get a copy of that starter. You had to literally buy 3 gba games a gba, a gamecube and 2 gamecube games to get every pokemon that had been removed. Also you needed 3 playthroughs of lgfr to get all 3 legendary dogs, 3 play through s of emerald or 2 friends with emerald to get the johto starters. On a similar not glameow is disgusting only being available in pearl, the discontinued dream worlds or a specific mission ins white 2 until the releases of oras. You can also use your pokemon in the previous games and then just send them over when they are useable in later games at a future date.

@@XenithShadow no. This isn't like gen 3 at all. Gen 3 had all Pokemon up to date in the game, but you had to buy multiple games. Sword and shield will not at launch have the data for every Pokemon. It has been officially announced that they will never have the data for all Pokemon. Let's be real; most didn't reset three times to get everything. But they had the option to get any/every Pokemon if they wanted, which I did. I have bought every game, played through multiple times, and caught 'em all. And it was all for nothing, because now If I move them forward I'm trapping them in limbo. I won't be able to, as I do now, pop one or two out for IV breeding. Or masuda method shiny hunting.or to have weird competitive teams. My living dex dies with this new release. Why bother catching them all if I can not use them all?

But i do really dislike hard to find no legendaries that are needed to complete the national dex. I believe stunky was also in platinum, so as i had diamaond and plantnium no glameow.

One thing I miss from Pokémon that will probably never ever come back is sprites. When Pokémon DPP and the BW B2W2 came out, the DS felt like it was THE ultimate Pokémon console, even with the 3DS out and I feel like the sprites were the biggest reason. I’m sorry but the 3D models took away any bit of character a Pokémon had. Take a Pokémon like Machamp, a big part of that Pokémon’s character is being a tough bodybuilder type Pokémon. In B2W2, the animated sprites had Machamp flexing and it looked great. In Machamp 3D model, it’s just standing and it looks so bland. Also, on a side note, the custom sprites some people would make of Pokémon was one of my favorite things to look at on the internet when I was a kid.

Ulodan they would have to be A LOT more animated for it to look nice which GameFreak won’t do. If they could replicate the style and color of Pokémon from their B2W2 sprites, then maybe. I don’t like how to just stand there. Also, it really does feel like the DS was the console for Pokémon, I’m pretty sure it unanimous that the DS games, HGSS DPP BW B2W2 are the best in the series.

This is a list for removed features with no replacement from recent games/Sword and Shield. Sword and Shield has the camp feature which is basically a modernized version of secret bases, which explains why it isn’t on this list.

imo, unfair comparison in number 1 to whats happening now. gen 3's lack of backwards compatibility was a hardware issue, not a direct result of poor decision making. later, in 2003, colosseum came out and in early 2004 frlg came out to patch up the pokedex issue. gen 3 became something meant to be experienced over a long period of time in segments that could eventually all be put together. gen 3 gave us many different adventures and putting your best foot forward in nearly all of them was required to get everything, but this creates a deep, personal (yet completely feasible) adventure for anyone who attempts it. whereas every pokemon could be caught in some capacity within gen 3, its actually LATER gens that fully remove this and rely to varying degrees on backwards compatibility features that are limited and, basically, suck (pal park being once a day, needing to do a minigame in bw, etc). Additionally, the fact gamefreak programmed all pokemon into ruby and sapphire shows they were always thinking of creating a way to get everyone in there, whereas they've directly confirmed they have no intention of doing such in swsh. it may not have been clear to everyone right away that gen 3's dex would be okay, but its clear to everyone right away swsh dex won't be.

Not even only a hardware issue really, it's a software issue too because between gens 2 and 3 they completely reworked the data structure of the file you would call any individual Pokemon. DVs replaced with IVs, EVs got a cap, added data for additional forms separate from their actual stats, natures, abilities. In fact when you use pokebank to transfer a Pokemon from the Virtual Console releases, it goes through this whole process to generate a legal believable copy of that Pokemon for Gen 6. People have used cloning glitches and transferred the exact same Pokemon multiple times to find vastly different results on the other end

Other stuff that is missing on SwRd/ShLd: - Seals (Balls customization) - Secret Bases - Inverse/Dive/Sky Battles - Super Training - Safari Zone - Berry Growing/Blending - VS. Seeker - O-Powers - In-game event Pokémon or Key Items - Seasons - Day/Night cycle or it having an effect on the world in any way. - Hordes - Habitat List - Soaring the region/Flying to routes - etc. Also, they already said patches for more mons are NOT coming, same for Megas and Z-moves. They expect you for buying a subscription for Home while your mons rot there, waiting for a new game to come for a possibility of being there.

most of these are things that werent even in gen 7. Day/night cycle and in-game events are a no-brainer. Secret bases have been replaced by the new camping feature. Habitat list hasnt been around since b2w2. Z moves would feel out of place in galar. I hated the roller blades, especially since you couldn't take them off. You can already run or use a bike, and I never liked the momentum of the roller blades, the fact that they're faster for a few seconds makes them harder to control in small spaces. They're just kinda unnecessary in my opinion.

The Gen 3 removal of those pokemon isn't really comparable to the current thing. In Gen 3 at least, the pokemon were still programmed into the game. There was still hope of finding all the pokemon in that exist. You obviously know this of course. With SwSh the pokemon aren't even programmed into the game. Meaning it's impossible to EVER put certain pokemon into the main games of Gen 8.

Ruby/Sapphire: - still had all the Pokémon programmed in and eventually made it possible to get them all; - broke compatibility for a good reason (complete overhaul of data values). Sword/Shield: - don’t have the remaining Pokémon programmed in (they might be patched in later on but that doesn’t seem to be GF’s intent); - break compatibility for bogus reasons (graphics? balancing?) The context is also very different, Gen 3 was the first gen they knew wouldn’t be the last so they made the breaking changes asap, whereas we’re now at a point where every Pokémon has a 3D model and animations that were made to last (to avoid cutting out the NatDex), and people have been paying for Pokémon Bank thinking they could always use it to carry their Pokémon to the next games, so it’s a really odd time to suddenly ditch a feature which, unlike most of this top 10, has been in more than 2 gens

Ugh, not another one. It really shows that you haven't neither owned a franchise nor made even a single game. Okay, let's say, for the sake of argument, that those models were really made to endure, tell me: Would you really be happy if they used mediocre 3DS models if that let you have all the Pokemon? No, right? Then they still have to work on them so they at least look like Switch models and that would take time. And why is taking time a problem? simple, because postponing the release of the games would mean postponing everything else. They would have to postpone the manga. They would have to postpone major booster pack releases in TCG, and that also would mean postponing tournaments so they would require to pay extra for the building that they had rented for said tourneys. They would have to also postpone the release of the new anime that they already teased and that would mean (because Japan really hates re-runs) having to create filler episodes and that would cost some money. And something you also need to know is that when any company needs to use money from their banks because they over-budgeted they consider that expenditure a mark of their failure. Simply put, what you and others don't notice is that Pokemon has a curse shared by a lot of other franchises: It is too big and ambitious. They have schedules that they simply cannot miss and with each new gen they also have new creatures to care about. Simply put, they got burned. This was gonna happen sooner or later. Tell me, when would it have been acceptable for this to happen? When there were 1000 Pokemon? Maybe 2000? or 3000?.

megagutsman I wonder if the situation would be any different if GF said instead of making better grafix, they said they weren’t in a position to delay the game/mess up the rest of the profit. Also Pokemon is a series for kids, and I imagine most kids don’t know shit about budgets and deadlines. They just want to play with their Clefairy they had since Pearl. But at the same time, that isn’t every kid, but it is a lot of em. Personally, I never gave an f about natdex, but now I can’t help but see pokemon as a sorta lifeless annual rehashy video game series. And I’m just burnt out as heck on the gameplay. In respect to the other games, I’m expecting sword/shield to be slightly better or worse than sun/moon.

The part that surprises me more than the backwards compatibility issue is why it happened: the complete overhaul of a pokemon's stats and hidden values. In hindsight it was a good decision, but the fact that game freak really just went for it will always surprise me

If there's one removed thing I miss the most, it's *DEFINITELY* that music from gen 5 when a Gym Leader sends out their last Pokémon, though I prefer the one from B2W2 over the one from the original BW This music is just something hard to explain, it's emotional but catchy, and fills you with a feeling of progress and success Everyone has their own favorite generation, but I think Unova beats all of them (Alola is very close though) when it comes to the soundtrack I just hope they will bring it to the Unova remakes

Game Freak is very sensitive to trying stuff they did in gen 5, which really sucks. Imo, gen 5 was held back by it's technical limitations. I didn't enjoy playing through them that much, because all the dialogue felt repetitive and boring. Now, the games can have cutscenes to better communicate story. Gen 5 needed to be told with cutscenes, so we could see all the emotional scenes the games have. It's just not fun to sit through dialogue with the tiny sprite moving. I think gen 5 would benefit greatly from remakes, but I don't know if they'd ever happen. I hope they do. The games have some of the best characters ever made in a Pokemon game and the best plot in my opinion.

I gotta say, number one being about the Gen 2-3 dex cuts and incompatibility was a total cop-out. First of all, it didn't even fit with the rest of the video. It felt very shoehorned in just so you could talk about the previous "Dex Cut". The reason that's in quotes is because it wasn't even a true dex cut like most people shape it up to be. The only reason for the 'cuts' was because of hardware incompatibility- The GBA simply couldn't communicate with the GBC like the GBC could communicate with the GB. In addition, no Pokemon were truly 'cut' from the Gen 3 games, as far as I'm aware. All Pokemon were coded into the games, and all Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon were indeed available in some form during Gen 3, whether it was through FireRed and LeafGreen or through transferring from one of the GameCube games. It was very inconvenient to have them spread out in such a way, but they still managed to include every Pokemon. The reason why people are upset now is because there's no incompatibility that we know of between Gen 7 and Gen 8. We are in the age where Pokemon can be stored in Bank indefinitely as long as the service is continued, and that Pokemon data can be transferred all the way from RSE up to USUM. There is no hardware difference that would truly matter. Switch cartridges are much larger than 3DS cartridges in terms of storage, the models are future-proofed and haven't been updated, yet some Pokemon are simply gone. There's no workaround. The ones that aren't included presumably aren't even coded into the game. All in all, I'm left disappointed by your number-one pick because I feel that it's somewhat of a false equivalency. I don't mean any harm by posting this, but I just wanted to throw my two cents out there.

8:06 There was something similar to the DexNav in BW2, the Pokédex had an additional list for each route with all the Pokémon obtainable there. But none of the other features like being able to sneak up to a certain Pokémon of course. Honestly that made completing the Pokédex so much easier and I didn't have to look up what I was still missing on Serebii or Bulbapedia. One of the reason why I love ORAS so much.

@@dickyleong5149 I'd beg to differ, I believe it's the entire package, a new region, new adventures to get into and a new storyline to follow through with, if it was JUST about the pokemon you could literally play pokemon showdown and use the same pokemon as much as you want. I think itd be more healthy to actually play the game and enjoy the game as it is before stomping your feet because they announced something you didn't like and if that really bothers you, you don't HAVE to buy it. The main series pokemon games could be doing worse and all the current and future games could have micro transactions like the mobile game and that's something to actually be up in arms about not possibly being unable to use your drifloon or whatever pokemon you like in a brand new region.

Then after the story you transfer the stuff you've been collecting since old Ruby and Sapphire to use for breeding, competitive, etc. And there's a lot of people who have attachments to some of their 'mons, like one would with pets. Yeah they're not real, but the memories made with them are. Gamefreak is taking a dump on those memories, and saying "Your favorite isn't worth including." to thousands of people.

Main Revolver I always thought the Safari Zone was really annoying, especially with the Pokémon you could only catch there. And Arceus help you if you happen to encounter a shiny Pokémon while trapped with the Safari mechanics. I think the Safari Zone would have needed a complete overhaul to make it into modern games. Make it less luck- and more skill-based and make the Pokémon you can catch more valuable than scarce, for example by giving them HAs or Egg Moves.

@@rainpooper7088 I love the safari zone espacially shiny hunting in it. The reason I loved it so much was because the unique and diverse pokemon I could encounter. Pokemon HGSS's Safari Zone is the best one out of them soley due to the variety of pokemon you can encounter. From Bagon, Bronzong, Manectric, Lairon, Lapras, Breloom, ect. I personally hope that a safari zone does come back in the future that's better then ever.

​@Cade Gimenez The thing with Megas is that they were supposed to bring greater balance to the board, but only created further imbalance as legendaries and pseudos (Tyranitar, Metagross...) got Megas as well. GF seems to care about balance now (and I really want to believe them); if that's the case, Pokémon will never truly be balanced if some Megas were still kept around. Mega Ray is the obvious example here, but there's plenty more with stats that are simply too high. (All Megas are +100 base stat from the original form, so rebalancing is not an option.) EDIT: Probably should mention that I'm sad to see them gone because I really love some of the designs. Mega Zard X is one of my favorites overall and I don't like Zard as much as the rest of the world seems to. But I understand that this choice can make the series better.

The DexNav itself may not be ever coming back, but I sure hope its features do. The one thing I want out Gen 8 is a *reliable* way to get Hidden Abilities from wild Pokémon (or ideally, breeding). I am shocked that so few people seem to care about this. I really hate how HAs have been handled so far; way too many Pokémon benefit greatly from their HA, but are a pain to obtain with it. A great example is Contrary Serperior, it has only been available through limited-time events. If I wanted to get one now, I simply can't. There's a dozen different ways to obtain HA Pokémon, but they're either limited to a few species, or too random and unreliable. (There's Showdown and Powersaves, sure, but what if I wanted to make a legit team on console? Is there a good reason to limit my options like this?)

TartaKoopa Couldn't agree more. The Dexnav was probably my favorite feature in any Pokemon game and by far my favorite method for hunting shinies. It also made dex filling and breeding a breeze, and I thought it was so cool that you could catch wild pokemon with hidden abilitie and egg moves.

And unfortunately, that means that GF is hesitant to put too many complex mechanics into their games (or at the very least don't put a ton of time into developing them). I just wish Game Freak would change or get rid of some game mechanics that were only introduced to justify why you couldn't do certain things in previous gens. Would anyone really care if they got rid of needing certain incenses to get Baby Pokemon that weren't available when their parents first came out? How about standardizing the Eeveelutions so that they all use elemental stones again? Designating an area in each gen with a mossy rock, or a special magnetic field just seems like more trouble than it's worth. And isn't it time that they finally let Nidorina and Nidoqueen breed?

Honestly, if Game Freak continues down its current path, it needs to implement a hard mode because they have been coddling the player to an increasing degree over the past few generations with gen 7 being the worst offender. Your rival picks the pokemon you are strong against, he heals you before and after battles. A lesser gripe of mine is the pokemon-amie and its successors. Through the power of friendship you can break the standard rules of battle. It's a lesser gripe however because it is completely optional. I won't complain about the exp share because it's a helpful tool for shortening grinds.

I'm not really too annoyed that the National Dex was removed from Sw/Sh. What I am annoyed to the brim about is the fact that I expected way more from a CONSOLE Pokemon game. The graphics and pokemon models hardly look any different from X/Y. At this point, it's just become a small novelty that the pokemon are in 3D. When Lets Go came out, i had some hope. The pokemon were walking with you again, they all appeared in the grass, the pokemon were to scale. All that was going through my head was "wow, and this is just a spin off game. i can wait to see how the new main line game will be like." And no, almost nothing impressive has come out. The National Dex being removed just showed me that GF doesnt care and knows they'll make a ton of money off the games anyways. Oh and its $60 too Yeah, no thanks

Hate to be that guy. But it's worse than Gen 3 because it is technologically possible through a *paid* service to transfer Pokemon but GameFreak limit you to the ones already in the game because they couldn't (be bothered to) port the rest, so there will be Pokemon species that just flat out will never be in SwSh. This isn't some understandable, if fustrating technical oversight; it's an artifical barrier either by choice or by negligence from GameFreak. There will be some poor idiot who transfers their favourite mon to Home, only to find out it will be stuck there because it's "too cold in Galar" and can't transfer back, so they'll have to pay a hostage fee to keep it from being wiped until the next game that mon is in.

Eh, Gen 5 was the high point for me. I liked PWT so much better than Battle Frontier because we got so many old theme remixes, the appearance of many old characters, a challenge that was actually fair and tons of different challenges like BF. The sprite animations in that game were outstanding, every Pokemon felt so lively unlike the 3D models which just stand there. The story was the best, hands down. HGSS had quite a lacklustre story and this was definitely the biggest improvement imo. The availability of Pokemon in B2W2. So many Pokemon were restricted to doing a bunch of tedious stuff in the safari zone in HGSS, but in Gen 5 you could find things like metagross, tyranitar and riolu in the wild, which was so cool. The level curve in HGSS was ridiculous and made using a full team of 6 really annoying, especially since there were no grinding spots in the region. BW was kinda dumb too since it jumped like 10 levels in post game, but at least you could train with Audinos. However, B2W2 was such a smooth experience for me, right to the end of postgame. I had to grind 1-2 levels about 3 times throughout the whole playthrough and I enjoyed it so much. The feature to use another repel when your last one has run out in B2W2. Absolute game changer. Following Pokemon was always a feature I thought was cool but didn’t really care about, as it doesn’t change the gameplay much. Sad to see it go but oh well. The post game of HGSS will always be the best but B2W2s was really enjoyable as well. There’s so much to do in both games. The two most significant features I would like to see again are the Vs Seeker and the Pokeathlon dome. Both were really good and shouldn’t have been removed. Overall, gen 5 was definitely not a step down from gen 4. Both generations represent the peak of Pokemon for me. Thanks for listening to my TED Talk.

I find the story of Gen 5 to be pretty uninteresting, which is always the thing people cite. I preferred the HGSS approach of not bothering to have a story. I preferred Frontier to PWT, but I can see it both ways. I was going to point out in my comment that the decline proper started on 3DS but it was zingier to just leave my comment as it is, and I do personally find Gen 5 just a little worse than HGSS.

From a developer point of view, there's something import to consider with the difficulties: If you have one difficulty, you have 1 world to beta test If you have 2, 3, 5 or more of them (With switches for "harder AI", "high level enemies") you now have that many separate worlds to test, since *any* change in one trainer or gym could break the entire game passed that point, and make the player give up on the game. Daniel R your missing the point. Doing anything like that requires effort and time and that's something GF doesn't seem to do. Between lazy animations and dropping features for "reasons". To make time for actual animations for all the pokemon that are either poorly animated or not animated all they could easily remake an older gen or continue a side series like mystery dungeon to add to the animations of the national dex/actual pokemon stadium level of unique animations/even a difficulty mode? Cause they won't cause they're going to push out the next gen following the same formulas that make money since it's geared to children and they aren't discriminating or picky for quality games

2 things One, being what i miss, was traveling back to a previous region, going to kanto in gen 2. Like throw a curve ball and in gen 9, make it so you can travel to unova from the gen 9 region. And instead of doing remakes, continue to advance time within the region, like a partial black and white 3 Two, they missed the chance for people to get their pokemon off the gameboy games during gen 4 using the same method to transfer pokemon from gen 3

I really liked GSC for the same reason. It's not as well done as I reckon it should have been, but it still was amazing being able to see how people in Kanto have moved on.

Yeah, the Gen3 thing was a pretty big kick in the nuts. One of my favorites from Gen2 was the Houndour line. What did I get as a replacement? Poochyena/Mightyena...quite a letdown, in my opinion. That's okay, because they also gave us the Beldum and Bagon lines were pretty awesome. Unfortunately, Gen8 won't have any of that. Even worse, I was kinda stoked when I learned that Tyranitar is in Gen8...except I went with Sword (because duh). I guess I can let that slide though, because the Deino line looks pretty cool too. Still, _most_ of my favorites from older games didn't make the cut, and that sucks. I do want to know who thought bringing back Goomy was a better idea than Bagon. I'd like to slap that person.
