Though it wouldn't count here, "Citizen Joe" is one of the best things you can do with a clip show: introduce genuine jeopardy into the frame story. Sure, you can put your heroes on trial or in a coma and fill out the episode with past events, but you know they're going to get out of it at the end because the typical framing story is too brief and tenuous to deliver any weighty consequences. In "Citizen Joe", we get a wholly new and contained story with its own progressing arc that puts the protagonist into real danger. It's just that said protagonist is a barber from Indiana.

@@paulagardner3218 The only gripe about 2010, was that it should have been a two part episode, if not an ongoing arc. The scene in which Sam approaches Jack and Jack is so bitter and angry, really giving Sam the third degree. I just wish that they could have gone back to the first meeting with the Ashen, and shown Jack as a lone voice, sensing something is wrong. What makes it worse is, shortly after this scene, Jack is back in the SGC, it's like, "ok, i have changed my mind", it was gtoo rushed, why had he changed his mind? The brilliant Teryl Rothery was also given an all to rare opportunity to shine, it would have been nice if she and Daniel had been in a relationship, also trying for a child, and like Sam, discovering the awful truth.

Claudia Black and Michael Shanks having good chemistry? Oh boy, somebody didn't watch Farscape. Ben Browder and Claudia Black in Farscape are probably the two actors with the best chemistry I have ever seen on TV. Ever wondered why they had so few episodes together on Stargate? They writers were actually afraid that their Farscape chemistry would come back and overshadow the rest of the cast, so they were kept separated or in company of the old SG-1 cast for the majority of their time on SG-1. As for the topic at hand: Lifeboat (ep6s7) was always one of my favourites. The episode where the team discovers a crashed colony ship, where Daniel Jackson gets the consciousnesses of many dead passengers uploaded into his brain, who then all fight for control over his body. It was also apparently Michael Shanks' personal favourite from an actors point of view, and he did a great job portaying the different personalities imo.

Torment of Tantalus. Great feel to this episode, nicely expressing the potential lying ahead of humanity (& the show) and the price sometimes paid to get there. Also, the melancholy potential futility of it all seeing that this great alliance was ultimately forgotten and decayed.

There But for the Grace of God is one of my favorite episodes. It's to see the worst case scenario playout as the SGC is overrun by the Goa'uld. The show would struggle to make them intimidating so it helped to see them win an invasion of Earth on screen. A Matter of Time was an excellent episode that showed that real science can be way more interesting them the sci-fi tecno-magic that we viewers constantly have to deal with. A supernova that threatens the entire galaxy somehow and is only stopped by a black hole is about the stupidest premise I've ever heard, and that was the plot to a goddamn Star Trek movie.

Yikes! Missed so many great episodes! I have to say that the Stargate franchise is the only show where, across three separate series, the final episode of each has left me incoherently screaming at the TV. I was such a passionate fan when these first aired. In SG-1, the final episode isn't bad, but the deletion of the Asgard just felt like a footnote. Thor deserved better! In Atlantis, pulling out the Wormhole drive just felt like a cop-out. And in Universe, there was so much left unresolved!
@BogeyTheBear2 жыл бұрын
Wormhole drive: I have this idea of introducing a race who uses a novel approach to interstellar travel which is basically the wormhole drive. The caveat is that the core of the system is a Stargate, and this particular race does not have the technology to build them. So they go around the galaxy and steal Stargates from other worlds in order to build their fleet, which most assuredly steps on the toes of the SGC and all their allies.
@noelburland71696 жыл бұрын
A great list. The two part episode in the middle of Season 3, with the episodes titled: "Jolinar's Memories" and "The Devil You Know" are also worth a mention. They are the only time the fantastic and literally Hellish villian Sokar is seen on screen. SG-1 are forced to travel the Moon Netu of the planet Delmak, that Sokar had transformed to look like a Hellish prison, to rescue Jacob Carter/Selmak. From there they discover that Sokar was preparing to take on the System Lords with an enormous fleet that would've guaranteed him victory and sole control of the Go'auld empire. It is also where the principle villain from the early seasons, Apophis makes his return, to which he becomes a threat to the galaxy after Sokar is killed and Apophis inherits his fleet and Jaffa army.

I saw A Matter of Time as a youngling and so did not guess what we were about to see that they were so terrified of. The reveal was awesomely horrifying and unlocked a new fear of black holes in me. The way that team was running for their lives, but it was already far too late. They couldn’t do anything to help them, just watch them on screen dying on the other side of the galaxy, a process that would go on for God knows how long from Earth’s perspective. Still gives me the shivers.

Re your comment about Jack O'Neil, I agree in the later seasons. He was flounderise too much. In Season 1-2, he was what you'd expect from ex-spec Ops. Ruthless combatant and commander that occasionally lightened the mood with insight and quips. My favourite episode of season 1 is Politics because of that. He's straightforward, blunt and to the point - and the only time he cracks a joke is an effort to cheer up Hammond about nearly being shut down because Kinsey is an ass.

Somewhere around season 6 or 7 there's a funny episode where they have a television crew doing a documentary (turns out to be a Gooold or something). They "interview" the guy who's always on the Gate control board, he's always saying "Chevron 6 encoding." So they ask him what his job entails and he literally says "I say Chevron 6 encoded." Window of Opportunity - Tealc and Oneal are stuck in a time loop and have to escape but along the way take some breaks is hilarious and does use the stargate in a unique way. Also lets Tealc stretch his comedic timing as by that point he was often the straight man. The Summit and the Last Stand - While ending weekly to very poorly seeing the Goa'uld interact with each other is fun and we get introduced to Ba'al one of my favorite snake heads, one that actually gives the Tau'ri respect enough that he causes a lot of problems. Dominion - This episode is always enjoyable to me for one scene where Ba'al talks to Adria, by this point in the show the Goa'uld were like 3 seasons removed from being any real threat and were at best an annoyance, to have Adria tease Ba'al saying there is nothing he could do to make her do what he wants, and then he just leans in on the bars, turns on his God voice (by this point another very rare occurrence), makes his eyes glow, and says, "I wouldn't be so sure about that." really brings back the terror that the Goa'uld represented and the power of infiltration they have. First few seasons gave them a real body horror or body snatcher vibe which fell off almost completely when Anubis came around. It was fun though very fleeting to see that threat return. Between Two Fires - the episode where the Tollan's are sadly and unceremoniously cut from the show the episode gives them a somewhat cool send off with a lot of intrigue and fun visual effects. The first episode I believe were Anubis is teased I believe. Tanith being a fun if underused Goa'uld being a far more restrained presence than the flamboyance we're used to. And the realization why the Tollan are selling all their space guns is because their useless always makes me chuckle. Politics sucks, it is a shame though the Tollan never make a return, the one advanced human race that wasn't trying to destroy Earth could have done a lot more. Fair Game - More Goa'ulds politicking around but now you have Asgard trying to maintain order and the Oneal stumbling around. I always game for Goa'uld to be pontificating around so this episode is fun. New Order Part 1 and 2 - The real Elizabeth Weir shows up, always weird to watch the previous season finale and see a different actress but thankfully they get the right one for these episodes. And more Goa'uld's pontificating at the SGC, HOORAY!

I'm a little disappointed you didn't have Window of Opportunity on this list. Still, the list was good. :)

Beast of Burden - and all of the ones with the unas, the one where they met the race who used naquadria as a powersource (forgot the name), the one where they get bitten by a bug, Spirits, the one wjere they have alternate timelines, and so on and so forth
One of the things I liked best about Stargate SG-1 is that the writers/directors knew how to do a really good clip-show/recap episode. My personal favourite is Disclosure, from season 6... but you certainly cannot top the two-parter, "Heroes" from season 7.

I like a little lightheartedness ever once and awhile. The episode where Sam helps Orrick race (forget the name-The Race?) and of course Window of Opportunity.

I loved Ethon to bits personally. It was a really good story that had me on the edge of my seat for the latter half, as it does not only show the manipulative capabilities of the Ori, but also foreshadows their raw power by showing what they can do by showing that the downgraded version of their tech is already something we humans cant even match.

while i like your 10, i might interchange some of the choices with the following: past and present, the nox, learning curve, the other side, 2010, forsaken, lifeboat, revisions, affinity, citizen joe

I am ASHAMED of all of you for not mentioning Bad Guys! Easily the single greatest episode of not just SG-1 but all of the Stargate franchise! Sad!

I think "the Changeling" deserves a spot. It always stands out to me as one of the most touching and insightful episodes.

The "2010" / "2001" pair deserved a mention - watching the feminist Aschen get upended twice was a treat. The Aschen deserved a revenge episode that never materialized.

Like the list. For an “Honorable Mention” episode “Forever in a Day” bookends the premise from the original theatrical movie. Following that ep the series totally closed the book on attempting to being a sequel to the movie and started adding many more original concepts. As everybody else has stated “Cause and Effect” - errr -- “Window of Opportunity” needed to have been on the list.

My number 1 favorite episode was in the beginning of season 5. Teal'c is trying to remember who he was to SG-1 and BratC is there. It also provided a new story arc to the pilot episode.

If someone told me your sci fi opinions, I'd swear you were just hot taking for attention. But you're not at all, and that's what makes this channel so interesting

Other than the aforementioned "Window ...." I have really enjoyed the Nox episode. Gives SG1 a dose of reality.

The first space battle with the Ori was basically Stargate's Wolf 359. It was terrifying at how powerful the Ori really is
