Loved this Shaun...the redheaded, fair skinned, freckle faced Scottish part of me is so proud! The Chained Unicorn... My thoughts are this: if the unicorn is unchained, Scotland will be " unchained". Wild and free, it will finally break free from the UK and become, once again, its own proud and free country. This is why, I think, thats its always portrayed as being in chains. Held captive by its master....England. Just my thoughts. Much love from Ontario, Canada...Keli 💖 Say Hi to Teca for me!😀

The unicorns holding coat of arms are chained not because Scotland is under the UK reign but to show that Scottish kings were so great an strong they could tame the mythical beasts. The unicorn was believed to be the strongest of all animals, even stronger than an elephant. It was wild and untamed, a raw force of nature, and could not be subdued or captured by any physical force (though it would willingly lay its head in the lap of a virgin and submit to her). It's usually accepted that King Robert III of Scotland, who ruled during 1390-1406, was the one who adopted the unicorn as the national symbol. Certainly the oldest known depiction of it in the royal coat of arms, on a gate at Rothesay Castle, was probably carved during his reign. The unicorn was famous for being the deadly enemy of the lion - the national animal of England - so there was a nationalistic reason for Robert adopting it. But why did he depict it in chains? He wanted to boast about the power of the Scottish kings - they were strong enough to tame even a unicorn, an animal that was supposed to be untamable. That's why the chain is fastened to a crown placed around the animal's neck. It is royal power that restrains the unicorn. This is supposition, though; it might simply be that the unicorn was depicted as chained because people in the 14th century thought that's how unicorns ought to be shown in heraldry, the same way that dogs were usually depicted with collars. One thing that's definite, though, is that the unicorn is not shown in chains as a way of showing that Scotland is somehow subordinate to England or under English control. The independent kings of Scotland were already using a chained unicorn as their badge 300 years before the Act of Union.

PLEASE! 😁 You could meet my invisible unicorn Skittles, my Mischief Fairies and all my imaginary friends. I love the fact that Scotland's animal is the unicorn. Beautiful! A bit of useless or useful information for you whichever way you perceive it. Caledonia was the name given to Scotland in the early days when Rome invaded these isles. They built a wall. You may have heard of it. Hadrian's wall runs across one end of the isle to the other. North of that was called Caledonia and South of that, Britannia. Since then, the border has changed. Really weird considering a place in England is called Carlisle. Not an anglo saxon name by any means. Same with Berwick. If you look at all the place names, most of them anyway north of that wall on the map, you see quite Scottish names, and south of that many English towns, with a really strong Anglo Saxon name. There are a few places in Scotland, that used to be called something else, however during the wars of independence, some places got a different name like the English base known as Fort William. Definitely an anglo saxon name and not Scottish by any means. I think it was the 1600's although I cannot be too sure. Need to scrub up on my history. xx

Is there a significant difference other than geography? 3. Where is best web site to get this information and how to do more research to find out more other than clan web site and one more thing, could you direct me to where I can find out more details about the "gypsies" of the boarders of Scotland and England. Thank you in advance! You are doing great work!

Jeri Young Morris That's a great subject, I personally love to know more also. But from what little information I read, hopefully Shaun could help more, the Highlands is traditionally Gaelic culture and language for the most part (although I think the language is much less spoken there also) and Lowlands is traditionally heavily in influenced by the English ( and other cultures like the Norman French, Norse, British Celts, and of course Gaelic) I think they have a language known as Scots(not Gaelic) in mostly the Lowlands (and in N.Ireland (Lallans). But that's what I've read and heard but love to know more.I also have Scots-Irish heritage and I'm kinda curious about this also :)

Jeri do you mean the Reivers who were by the way people of mixed Scots and English decent who crossed the border at will when Scotland and England were independent countries robing and pillaging as they went. they took up residence on which ever side of the border wanted them the least, as in who would less likely put them in prison. This by the way went on until the late 17th century.

Hey Shaun, Today I was in a British market in our town in Texas and I was so excited to find cans of Irn Bru! Of course I had to buy one so I could find out what you Scotts are raving about. I figured even if it was the new recipe I’d know no difference. When I was paying I asked if it was the old or new recipe. Low and behold it’s the original Irn Bru! The guy told me not to tell anyone where I got it because it’s not cleared by the FDA for sale in the U.S. Now I’m torn between opening it so I can taste it and saving it because it’s a can of the original Irn Bru!! Shite I think I’ll have to go back and buy another can so I can do both. Anyway if I can’t go to Scotland I guess I can have me a taste of Scotland here in Texas. Great Video!! My preliminary, unresearched explanation of the chained unicorn as described in this vlog: the Unicorn represents the rich, mythic history of the British Isles. This history is filled with "alternative" stories from ancient origins unknown in the present due to subjugation within a Kingdom context. Untamed tribes (similar to indigenous populations around the world) are absorbed into Colonized situations and their heritage lost - even though it is these original peoples where the true myths, cultures and belief systems of a land reside. These people, their beliefs and culture are always "tamed" and sterilized by the occupying ones for maximum homogenization. The Unicorn is untamed freedom, raw and undomesticated almost fantastical and mythic lore. When chained, a Unicorn becomes a glorified carriage horse. The British Isles are also said to be The Fortunate Isles as some believe them to be a remnant of an ancient atlantis or a civilization of wisdom and knowledge. Therefore, the great wisdom of the past which is only passed down through the untamed/indigenous culture becomes lost. The United Kingdom situation is the absorption of this original culture, and the Unicorn is enslaved, the past forgotten, the myths lost or ridiculed as fantasy :( Some say hidden/suppressed truths of the past still exists in, for example, the Gaelic and Welsh languages itself. Which, to support my theory, was banned when The Education Act of Scotland (1872) occurred and led to generations of Gaels and Welsh being forbidden to speak their native language in a classroom. The UK is dominated by an English colonization. This led to a deterrence of the other cultures like the Scotts, Welsh and Irish, in order to properly absorb them. It is funny Shaun went into the Panamanian export of Scotland and how it would have become a colony. Some think that effort was of planned design to collapse Scotland's economy to force them into a United Kingdom situation for proper homogenization with the Spanish working in concert with the English colonizers. At that time in history, kingdoms worked together and traded favors to achieve their own ends. ie: America would not exist without the French who aided us against England - the French who wanted/needed to deliver a blow to the English. These strong, colorful words are only meant for allegory, make of them what you will. Shaun used a lot of this symbolism, so I went with just specific things he mentioned :)

OK felt like I should provide at least a source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_(Scotland)_Act_1872 Effect on Gaelic: The Education (Scotland) Act 1872 effectively put an end to non-English medium education and repressed Gaelic with pupils being punished for speaking the language.[7] Pupils were belted if caught speaking in Gaelic and beaten again if they did not reveal the names of other students speaking Gaelic.[1] The effect of the education act upon the Gaelic language has been described as "disastrous"[8] and by denying the value of Gaelic culture and language, contributed to destroying the self-respect of Gaelic communities.[9] It was a continuation of a general policy (by both Scottish, and post 1707, British governments) which aimed at Anglicisation.[8] As a result of facing punishment and humiliation for speaking Gaelic, many parents decided not to pass on the language to their children, resulting in language shift.[10] Gaelic medium education in Scotland was not established until the 1980s, and the impact of the Act is still being felt in Gaelic communities today.[1][9]

Really getting into my heritage lately... I took the navy and green plaid as mine because we don't have a clan so I chose that one. I hope nobody has that plaid as theirs for a clan but I really like that one so I chose it :)

I think the Unicorn either used to be real, or is real we just have not seen it. Just my speculation on it considering it was first used in the 12th century and surely drawings back then of such a creature would have been on the basis of someone having seen it. Or we are just crazy Scottish folk after all, and someone drew it after one too many whiskys LOL. Also, it's symbolism. It is thought, that The Unicorn is a Wild Beast that cannot be conquered. Scotland has never been conquered through battle, but through something else entirely which you mention in point 2. That to me is being chained to something that we had no choice in doing for many reasons. We were chained to the union, sold whatever we had left to the union, Rabbie Burns even makes mention of that in Parcel of Rogues. Ultimately at the sacrifice of our parliament at the time (even though that was meant to be retained) The beast was never conquered, it was chained to be a slave to money. Just my take on it.

The chained unicorns have been around quite a while before the union of the crowns in 1603 and the formation of Great Britain. The symbology in the heraldry image of the Unicorn with the crown around its neck and bound by a chain is this; in legends, the Unicorn was believed to be the strongest of all animals and the wildest, they were considered an avatar of untamable nature itself. The Kings of Scotland wanted to show how great they were and how powerful they were. So, in choosing the Unicorn and displaying it in this way they were saying that not only did they own the Unicorn but, that they had the power to subdue it. The crown around the Unicorn's neck shows this, the Unicorn belongs to the King, the chain wrapped around the creature shows the great power and strength of the King to hold the Unicorn in eternal bondage. Very cool.

About unicorns: Earliest pictures of unicorns are not horse-like. Look at the chins on those old paintings. They were a surgically modified Billy goat, selected at an early age for strength and intelligence. The horn buds were transplanted close to each other nearer the center of the head and "trained" as they grew, into a spiral. You can see the spiral in those old paintings. The tip was sometimes given a sharp metal cover that became part of it. This would become the lead goat of a herd, with a weapon that could defeat all rivals, including wild would-be conqueror males (the central horn had more reach and strength and could penetrate skulls with a hard charge), and even predators such as lions. So unicorns were proud and independent, yet leaders and protective. The ancients knew this and it was widely practiced. There are a very few tribes in remote places that still do. Most moderns forgot it centuries ago.

Hi @Shaun, I'm a piper from the Philippines, not Scottish, just a wee bit :P . When folks ask me about bagpipes I also tell them about that Roman story and include the fact that almost every country in Europe has their own version of bagpipes. I also tell them that the primary reason the Great Highland Bagpipes became so popular is because of america, a long time ago, the only jobs Scots and Irish could get in america was either as police, firemen or soldiers... and hollywood did the rest :)

Shaun, from what i understand regarding the chain around the unicorn. as Noah was sailing the flooded earth, 1 unicorn fell overboard and drowned and the survivor once the flood receded landed in Scotland, it was so depressed and the pain of its loss so difficult to bear that locals decided it should be protected from itself, no normal chain would do for such a creature, so a gold one was used with a gold crown to symbolise power and respect. dont know what the truth is unfortunately, but i was told this as a child and its always stayed with me.
