My mom's side of the family is from Romania (Transylvania to be specific), and there was an old wive's tale in the village where my great great grandmother grew up that if you didn't name your baby girl after either your aunt or you grandmother, the baby would soon die. My great great grandmother was apparently not a superstitious person, because she didn't believe the story and decided to give her daughter a different name. The daughter died shortly after birth. The next time she became pregnant, she had a girl again and still refused to name her after an aunt/grandmother. That daughter also died. The next time she became pregnant she had another daughter and named her after her grandmother/aunt (I can't remember which one), and the daughter survived.

The "don't show your baby to the public" superstition was most likely made because a baby's immune system was not fully developed yet; taking it outside and/or showing it to people would increase it's chances of becoming sick and dying due to the pathogens in the air and on people. Of course, people back then probably didn't know this, so they invented the 40-day rule. Maybe after some trial and error, they discovered that the baby could stay healthy after being exposed to the outdoors after this amount of time. Or maybe I'm just overthinking this and it's just an old wives' tale.
@kankerkaas509510 жыл бұрын
A lot of old wives tales and such had scientific reasons behind them that people just didn't know of back then. Don't burn me on the stake for this, but the example from the Old Testament in the Bible about not eating shell-fish, was probably due to some people being allergic to it, but of course no-one then knew about allergies so they assumed that it was just generally not fit for consumption.

Interestingly enough, my anthropology class was discussing the, 'Evil Eye', and how in some folk tales, a sign of the evil eye was envy; even giving someone a compliment or admiring something for too long was considered taboo. That's why in some cultures, parents do not show too much outward affection for their children; in case a spirit or person grows envious, and takes them away….

I live in Hawaii. We don't whistle at night either because it's believed to invite spirits known as the Night Marchers. In old Hawaii, the eight islands were eight separate kingdoms, until King Kamehameha the first, also known as Kamehameha The Great, fought to unite the islands as one kingdom. The Night Marchers are the spirits of the warriors who died in that war. Whistling after dark is a way of calling the Night Marchers.

Pinky Pinky terrified the shit out of me when I was in primary school. My brother even told us that there was a Pinky Pinky in his school's toilet, hence they were dismissed earlier that day
@daniellelois649410 жыл бұрын
In my old primary school we were all convinced the very last toilet had a ghost in it. So literally no one would ever use it. If anyone new came we'd be like "okay just don't go in this toilet, it's haunted". It was the only stall that had lots of spiders and bugs in it. Also when I would go to the toilets during lesson I could hear weird scratching noises coming from it. #nope

When I was in 4th-6th grade everybody was convinced that there was a ghost in one of the middle stalls of the bathroom when I was in the toilets with my friend and when I turned around to talk to her while washing my hands I saw a little girl in the open stall... needless to say I didn't dry my hands after washing them 😂😂 I then told that to the entire grade and no one EVER went in ther
@jackieblack25710 жыл бұрын
I'm convinced every elementary school has at least one haunted stall. At mine, the entire girl's bathroom in the old building was supposedly haunted by a girl who hung herself. Apparently, years later the older sister of a schoolboy was looking for her younger sibling during a school festival. She checked the newly reopened bathroom on a whim. The lights were out but she saw movement in a mirror. She called his name and stepped in. The door shut. Depending on who you asked the sister was either found in the bathroom hung by a water hose the next day or decapitated with bloody scratch marks at the base of the door. Personally I remember hearing creepy ass noises which I'm thinking were messed up pipes and probably the origins of the whole bathroom haunting.

When I was in primary school (1st grade) "Pinki Pinki" used to be an actual game that we dared each other to play, it was like bloody mary, but it worked differently. I don't remember exactly how it was played, something along the lines of going into the bathroom, closing the door and chanting something with "pinki pinki" in it. Anyway, what's scary is that a few girls in our grade tried the "game" and one of them came out bearing scratches on her arm after there was a commotion in the bathroom. I don't know if they faked it, but all the juniors were too afraid to go to the bathroom alone for a few months after that. (Happened in South Africa BTW)

It's South Korea. The legend was formed during the time when the government was killing its people, so to cover it up they said that if you left a fan on in the room that the fan would suck out all of the oxygen in the room, hence killing the person. At least that's the very rudimentary version of what I was told from my boyfriend who studied abroad in South Korea for a semester.

After 11 yrs (I was 9 to 20 in this home) my family had a moving company handling everything for a move from NC to MO, and near the end my mom asked me to see what was left upstairs. When I got to the top of the stairs, a good sized occasional table fell over and almost hit me, (1st scare), then I heard an hysterical laugh-track coming from my mom's room at the far end of the hall, I figured she had left her small tv on, but it was off, unplugged and cord wound and taped (2nd scare), then the closet door at the same end of the hall (w/ceiling panel for attic crawl space) swung open and after swinging back/forth a few times, slammed hard, followed by the laughing again (3rd scare - pee involved this time). I had been hearing and seeing stuff there for years, but these were the last straws. Ready to MOVE

@blackmumbat2010 жыл бұрын
In my country Ethiopia, there are a race of people called the lalibela who believe they are cursed to wonder the earth and beg for a living in really loud voices. They believe that they will lose their arms and legs if they stop. Most of them have really beautiful, strong voices. There is another superstition where you have to say "I am grinding Mary's barley" if you hear a voice calling your name but there is no one there looking at you. The orthodox believe that it is the voice of the devil. The superstitions are endless here where there are many pagans who still believe in the old indigenous gods and pay tribute to them. My grandpa gave me and my cousins soul names in our language when we were children. So we all have two names. The one you see here is the one I use formally. The other name I am only supposed to give to people who are very close to me. We were baptized twice. Once in the name of Christ and the second for the goddess Attete at Horra. The ironic thing is that I am now an atheist.

#4 when he talks about the mirror. "Negative energy will bounce off and reflect onto you." If the mirror is already facing me, shouldn't that suggest the negative energy that's reflecting upon me was already my own? Lol

Oh, and one I forgot about sleeping: There's a superstition about closet doors. The way my mother told me was that if you sleep with any doors open, especially closet doors, it would allow bad things to cross over into our world and hurt us.

I surprisingly haven't heard of those ones until now, except for the part about closing the eyes of a person who has passed, and then placing pennies on them. Also, the baby was mega cute.

Growing up I was told to never open the door if you see that no one's outside because your inviting a spirit into your house. When one of my relatives passed away my aunt's door bell ranged around the time of the their death and it happened all night. My mom said it was that relative trying to come home.

The first one.....Da fuq? They got something about gum, or did they not want people to fall asleep and get gum in their head? And what does South africa have against Pink? And crapping? Lol, I want a ghost in my couch, haha who whistles at night? russians hate people showing off babies, people who do that do get annoying. the touching hands one is just bizarre. I'm screwed when it comes to sleeping, I sleep way too much. Pretty sure the tale was made to get lazy butts up. I hope the future husband thing works, sounds fun!! and stalker-ish. The Doorbell thing sounds like its just asking to get robbed. Or ding dong ditch. The the open eye thing is creepy, the lack of light in the eyes makes me think the soul really left the body.

My grandparents on both sides were Mexican or Hispanic. They told my parents - who told me - that if you see a barn owl and whistle at it, it will kill you. It's because there's a bad witch that turns into a barn owl. Personally I like the little guys but they do scare the crap out of my mom.

As a child in Greenland my mother told me that when she was a child, they weren't allowed to whistle when the northern lights were out. This was because the northern lights were spirits, and if you whistle they would take your head and play ball with it x3

The "Meeting Your Future Husband" wife's tale is actually the original "Bloody Mary" ritual, however the true original ritual involves this: The woman preforming this has to have a hand mirror with all the lights out, walk backwards up a flight of stairs while holding the mirror and a candle. The mirror would either bring up an image of the future husband, or a skull indicating that the woman will die alone.

When he said the one about sleeping with mirriors facing you sends negative energy, I looked around my room and realized I have two mirrors facing me
