One of my favorite memories with my 2 best friends involved Coke Blak: All three of us were hanging out the week of it's release. My friends decided to each buy one. I didn't though because I don't like the taste of coffee to begin with. We got into the car after buying them, my friends in the front and me in the back seat. And in one, synchronized action, I watched both of them take a swig and then spit it out in disgust out the side of the window. It was one of the few times that I almost blacked out from laughing so hard.

I've long suspected that New Coke was a ploy by Coke to be able to change its original recipe from cane sugar to HFCS (cheaper). And yes, the taste *is* different.

i remember back around 2007ish, at the state fair in my state there was a vault booth, and they had a "taste test" where they had a little plastic cup with vault and a little plastic cup with mountain dew, and if you guessed which was which, you got a free bottle of vault. obviously it was easy to tell, so i got my free bottle. ive always had good feelings about vault since then.

Anyone else remember coke life? It didn't do too well in the UK, I have a vague recolection of it causing allergic reactions in people with hayfever because of what it used for sweeteners. Coke Zero seemed to basically kill it.

I remember that when I was a child Coca cola tried to make a soda with mate (an infusion that we drink in Argentina, paraguay, Uruguay.) It was awful I think it last two month and then disappeared

I had a friend in the US Navy who was going on a "cruise" to Australia, back in the '80s, who said he'd bring me back a case of "Real Coke," instead of the New Coke we were forced to drink. He said his Navy buddies who'd just comeback from there said the Aussie Coke was still made with sugar. Didn't happen, and when Classic came out---made with syrup instead of sugar---a huge cheer went up all over the world. What was that message they found carved on a stone in the Gobi Desert, back in the early '60s---"Don't f--k with a good thing"?

A local coffee shop here has a drink they call a "Dr. Pepper Creamer" that is DELICIOUS and does basically the same thing. It's just a Dublin Dr. Pepper (the kind made with Imperial sugar), cream, and vanilla coffee syrup served over ice but it is SO good! And when you think about it, Coke/Dr. Pepper/Root Beer floats are the same thing... the milk is just frozen.

I was so sure that "green" Coke would be on this list :D It seems to be pulled of the shelves where i live. Its this strange cola with stevia instead of sugar. It magically disappeared from the supermarkets here in lower Saxony :D

In Argentina they launch a Soda call Nativa, was made whit taste of yerba mate (an argentinian brevage like a green tea) it was horrible.. pure suguar. It last 6 months in the market

I had it coke c2 as a kid in 2004. It was pretty good for the most part. It tasted like regular Coca-Cola, but not as sweet, but otherwise pretty good.

Tab Clear wasn't meant to challenge Crystal Pepsi. The intent was to market a diet beverage with "medicinal qualities" to make people equate it with Crystal Pepsi (not diet), in order to confuse them and lower interest in Crystal Pepsi. It was basically a Kamikaze effort, which is why Coke used Tab (a no longer popular brand) for the sacrifice (this info comes from former Coca-Cola execs). Therefore, it was a complete success.

Tab Clear was meant to fail. The idea was to make a Crystal Pepsi-like product that was so ridiculous it would turn people off to the whole idea of "clear cola" and thus bring down Crystal Pepsi with it.

Coke just introduced the Feisty Cherry Diet Coke (only in 12 oz. cans and sold individually, even at room temperature) and it's TOO SPICY and TOO ROBITUSSINY for even my taste. At least Diet Cherry 7Up (a few 2 liter bottles imported from Florida by Walmart) has the cherry flavor without the Robitussin reference.

New Coke was still on shelves when Coke Classic was re-introduced. New Coke was not at all the failure people are making it out to be. Sales did not plummet, they just didn't rise in the summer months when soft drinks sales often did. The hate letters also didn't do much to curb Coke from re-introducing the classic brand and Coke was still committed to the formula, what really prompted the return of the original formula was the outright boycott of its own bottlers in the southern states that refused to distribute the product. That act turned the 'if' to 'when'. When Coke announced the return of Coke's original formula under the "classic" brand, interest spiked, and sales as well, however New Coke, didn't vanish, it was still on shelves, and actually continued to be stacked next to Coca-Cola for 7 years, until it was renamed Coke II in 1992. It would be pulled from most markets, shortly afterwards but in some midwestern and southern states along with Canadian markets Coke II was readily available until its total cancellation in 2002.

I really liked Vault! It used to be my favorite soda, but when it was discontinued, Mountain Dew became my favorite! I'm not a huge fan of Mellow Yellow. Yes, it does taste good, but the name "Mellow Yellow" sounds like a slang term for urine, and the drink looks like it too!

Vault was odd - Everybody in that era was Doin' the Dew, and Coke made their own Dew. It wasn't necessarily bad, but a superior product already existed.

Actually, the change from cane sugar to HFCS was already being done several years (like 3-5) before New Coke was introduced. The New Coke formula is (probably) still with us in USDM, since it was done from the Diet Coke formula of several years earlier... (Coke Zero was originally based on the Coke Classic formula, vanilla and all)
