im actually triggered on how predictable watchmojo is. Let us not be blinded by nostalgia glasses and actually re-cast this list in light of which characters mattered most to the series and had the best overall development and arcs within the series. Factoring likeability, popularity, character development design, and importance to the series as a whole, below would be my top 10 10. Iris: Though she is by far the worst of the Female Companions, she did have some elements of character development, particularly w/Dragonite and the trip to the dragon village. She was just annoying the majority of the time and did not endear herself to the audience as a character. She gets 10 because she still was a female traveling companion which counts for a lot. 9. Bonnie: She is another character who makes it on the list mainly because she is a female traveling companion. She fills the Max role in XY and is by all accounts a cute and somewhat charming character who does not contribute much to the story but is inoffensive and far less annoying than Iris. She has had really good character moments like when she cared for the Tyrunt, and the way she 'keeps' Dedenne and Squishy 8. Officer Jenny: She is one of the two great recurring minor characters in Pokemon and always provides the moral center for many episodes. I recall the one episode with the Growlith who was being controlled and she let it bite her in order to bring it around. Plus the way she plays the recurring Brock joke is always a fond childhood memory. 7. Nurse Joy: The other great recurring minor character, she is always the reminder of the care and friendship central in Pokemon. One of my favorite Nurse Joy memories was the athletic one from the Orange Islands who was friends with the Giant Magikarp. Emphasizes the lengths Joys go to help Pokemon. 6. Zoey: Probably the best female rival in the series, she was always a dedicated hard working coordinator who had a friendly rivalry with Dawn throughout Sinnoh. She helped Dawn get out of her contest funk and pushed Dawn to be her best. She was not overpowered as she did lose to May and Dawn on occasion, but was still very good and ended up winning the title of Top Coordinator in Sinnoh in an entertaining Master Class Pokemon Contest Arc. 5. May: One of the longest recurring friend characters, May had a solid arc where she grew from someone with no goals who only started on a journey to travel, to a confident young woman who grew to love Pokemon Contests and developed a dream to be a top coordinator. She does not rank as high as some of the other female companions only because she had fewer character building moments, and usually they were related to her growing and learning as a coordinator, not super personal soul searching moments. Though she learned much from Ash, she also had less 'shipping' moments than others and was therefore less intertwined with Ash's growth. Still she was a kind, sometimes naive, and ultimately really likable character. 4. Jessie: The main female villain, Jessie has had a lot of development over the course of 7 or 8 regions. Though often relegated to comic relief, she has a good heart despite her sometimes wickedly evil front. She has a deep passion for performing and actually has real talent for making her Pokemon look good. She also really cares about her Pokemon as evidenced by her releasing Arbok to protect the poison Pokemon from that poacher and her also releasing her Dustox so that it could find love and happiness. She also had a pretty difficult past that is shown in flashbacks. The only reason she is not higher on the list is that she does not get nearly as much focused screen time as the top 3 3. Dawn: Dawn is an absolutely amazing female lead during the SInnoh saga. She always had a great attitude, was fun, confident, and sometimes too headstrong for her own good. Unlike May, she had the goal of being Top Coordinator from the beginning because her mom was a top coordinator. This gives her character focus. You wanted to see her live up to her mother and were so disappointed for her when she could not get out of the first round of 2 Pokemon Contests in a row. She had excellent character development as both a coordinator and as a trainer, evidenced when her Mamoswine would not obey her. She also had amazing bonding moments with Ash. A few off the top of my head, she cheered for him during his gym battles, she wondered if her contests were holding Ash back from his dream, and she openly admitted to wanting to go to Kanto with Ash. She is a fully developed character and would have been higher if it had not been for... 2. Serena: Serena is like a combination of all the best aspects of May and Dawn. She has a more compelling version of May's journey to travel and finding a dream character arc because the reason she wants to escape home is because she does not want to be the person she feels her mother is pushing her to become, a Rhyhorn Racer. She runs into Ash and remembers him from her childhood, establishing her backstory and why she would want to travel with Ash. After discovering Pokemon Showcases, she begins to work on her dream but how seriously, one could not tell until she tries one and loses do to a mistake on her part. She is crushed but reaffirms that this is something she really wants to do and cuts her hair, a physical and symbolic change in her character's maturation. Not only is her showcase arc done really well with her ultimately learning that the ultimate goal of a Pokemon Performer is to give back to her audience, she also has a really obvious canonical crush on Ash which well rounds her as a character with both her own goals and dreams who is not above falling in love. She clocks in above Dawn because while Ash and Dawn have a great friendship, there are more hints at a blossoming romance and the possibility of something deeper within Serena's character arc. 1. Misty: The longest running female companion, Misty and Ash play so well off each other. She brought humor and heart in equal qualities while being a complex and deep character. The youngest of four sisters, Misty had a certain inferiority complex that gave depth to her character. She was definitely confident, always knowing who she was as a Water Pokemon trainer and never lacking in that identity. She was also far more astute than and learned than any of the other female traveling companions who all seemed to start off as learners. Misty was already accomplished and knew far more than Ash initially which played really well with Ash's immature antics at the beginning of the Anime. Despite not having a protagonist arc of her own with the exception of the Whirl Cup, Misty distinguished herself by her maturity which was counter posed nicely by her sometimes hotheaded flare ups. Not only did she have many hints towards her affection for Ash, she also showed that she had a powerful maternal side not seen in other female companions. Her maternal sides shown most prominently in her interactions with Togepi, as she cared for the baby unceasingly until the time of its final release. Nostalgia does play a huge factor in this particular entry but it really only exists as a tie-breaker between who I feel are the three most fully developed characters in the series in Dawn, Serena, and Misty. Misty wins out because she embodies the heart central at the core of the Pokemon series.

I don't know if I could make a list of Top 10 girls from the *OVERALL* Pokeani because there's just so many *(As well as not a lot of them leaving an impression on me)*. Now ranking each of Ash's female traveling companions I could do that. I don't agree with your listing of the Pokégirls *(Who've traveled with Ash)*, Serena takes #1 for me for her character development, her performer arc, she's someone I found to be easily relatable, and really I never thought I could love a single Pokémon character as much as I do Serena *(rare for me to like ANY fictional character that much, some people like Serena JUST for Amourshipping and while admittedly me being a HUGE amourshipper myself I don't give that to her as a credible reason to be a good character. For me Amourshipping is a great bonus to an already great character, although it kind of does help her a little bit since I love her overall dynamic with Ash)*. I like Misty and nostalgia is one heck of a drug *(But I like to say it's something I don't overdose on or take really)*. For me nostalgia will only take you so far and for Misty it doesn't take her that far past the starting line for me. She didn't really do much once the Orange Islands began and just became stale for me. I go back and forth between who I like more between May and Dawn but I can't fairly judge Iris since I've yet to see the Best Wishes series. But I'm commenting to say you're list was *VERY* well done, and I had a lot of fun reading it, even if I didn't agree with it.

Misty can't have inferiority complex if she is confident, because it contradicts the meaning. What you're trying to say is superiority complex. But other than that, that ain't much of a deep character. She even barely has character development, throughout all of the 257 episodes she was in, because she remains mostly the same. And she lacked in the identity of being a Water Pokemon trainer the moment she took Togepi in, because really that goes against her goal of being the best Water Pokemon trainer (although not as bad as Iris, just only two Dragons and the rest just random nonsense). She may have knew what situation Brock was in, when it came to girls, but can't figure out or help out Ash as fast most of the time. If anything, other than Brock being loved at times throwing him off, Brock is more astute than her. Also of what Misty knows, that's pretty much all she knows, other than barely learning anything from Ash's gym battles. Anything other than that, she doesn't learn much if at all. Misty knew more than Ash, but didn't gave much advice, or help him, which instead Brock took on that role. She never acted mature all the time, she was about as normal as the rest of the girls most of the time, and then the occasional flare ups. And the Whirl Cup is the only time Misty ever shined, other than that, she was just there, sometimes putting her 2 cents into situation, while being hot headed. Her many hints of "affection" was mostly, if not only in the 4kids dub, which honestly ruined the original script of Misty's character. So yeah, the only thing remaining true in the sub is her maternal side she shows in her interaction with Togepi, but her with Ash? No, that never, if not barely happened, so much you could say she only cared for Ash as a friend. She mostly wanted the bike from him, and that's about it. So yeah, if you get rid of nostalgia, she would be below all the companion girls, other than Iris, she remains dead last no matter what. Other than you buying into 4kids dub, and blinded by nostalgia to put Misty number 1, this was was almost perfect, if not good. But again, you put Misty as number 1, and that's what hurt this list the most.

Byron Lyons You are entitled to your opinion, but if you want to discuss why you feel Misty is such a bad character, do me the common courtesy of using actual facts to back up your argument. First things first, one can have an inferiority complex to someone else but still be a confident person. The traits are not mutually exclusive. Misty was confident in her goals, never doubting her goal of being a water Pokémon master, but at the same time wanted to prove that she was just as good a trainer as her older sisters and was beautiful in her own unique way. Second, just because you take care of another type of Pokémon, doesn't not mean you still can't specialize in raising and training a certain type of Pokémon. Lance is called the Dragon Master but he caught the Red Gyarados and in the games has an Aerodactyl and a Charizard on his team. I also never said Misty was more mature than Brock. I said she had maturity in her character, which she did. If you look back to Showdown at the Pewter Gym, Misty has to tell Ash that Rock Pokémon are weakened by Water. Misty definitely had a nurturing motherly side as evidenced by one episode in which she took care of a stun-spored Ash and Brock and yet another episode where she had to get Ash, Brock, and Todd out of jail. Nostalgia is a valid factor in considering rankings because if a character is memorable, they stick with you in your memories through the years, despite time passing. The fact that I remember all these things about Misty from over 10 years ago without rewatching any of those episodes is a testament to how memorable she was as a character. She actually isn't my favorite female character, but due to her long standing role within the series, she deserves consideration as a top 3 female character in the series. Like it or not, Misty is memorable and people still love her as a character. She gets the number 1 slot on my list partially because of this factor which she has over Serena and Dawn, both of which I like more than Misty.

You do realize when the first movie was supposed to come out, it potentially could have been the wnd of Pokémon and as such there was a scene filmed with an old Misty who fondly remembers her friendship with Ash. Ash and Misty had feelings for each other but it was never a rediculously serious romantic relationship. May deserves a high spot, maybe more than Misty. I felt like she struggled the most out of the female characters and didn't fall into a trope like Misty and Serena sometimes did.
