Tsareena's name is based on "Czarina," the Russian equivalent to a queen. She is also based on the Mangosteen fruit, sometimes called the "Queen of Fruit" due to an unsubstantiated story of Queen Victoria offering a sizeable reward to anyone who could bring it to her. So given that the line is based on a fruit closely linked to queens, it only makes sense that they be exclusively female.

Major misconception: In most cases, honeybees are actually female. Male honeybees are quite different in how they act and behave - they don't attend the nest, but tend to leave and visit other queens and mate with them. They aren't equipped to grab pollen, they don't even have a stinger. But they are fatter and wider than female bees (both worker and queen). This is both an oversight by Game Freak and yourself, but it makes sense as far as Combee's design is based off.
@joaosoares-rr5mj5 жыл бұрын

One thing I want to point out about Meowstic is that the females have a much more offensively based level up move set, ironically enough. The males, on the other hand, learn a lot more support/status moves.

I think it has something to do with Autism. Males are usually (USUALLY, not always) more passive while females with it are, again, usually, more aggressive. And come on. Meow-stic. Meow(auti)stic Just a theory.
@grumpyface25535 жыл бұрын
@@NimhShambler I'm sorry to say, but your reasoning is backwards. Ever since autism has been acknowledged as a disorder, it was diagnosed far more often in boys than in girls. Why? Well, it's not that autism has different symptoms based on sex. The truth is that girls are merely pressured to be quiet and not "act out", whereas young boys aren't really told the same. Without the pressure to act sedately, boys don't tone down their symptoms, thus it's easier to diagnose it in them. Autism can present differently no matter what your gender is! TLDR; I'm not sure what Meowstic's inspiration is, but I'm pretty sure it's not autism. (Trust me, I've got plenty of experience with it.)

@Lockstin & Gnoggin, I would like to point out about the real reason as to why the female combee has a mark where the male does not. Most farmers that raise bees mark their queen bee so that they can be easily monitored. This is why the female combee is marked in this situation as it's inspired by farmers who mark their queen bees.
@artur69127 жыл бұрын
Let's also not forget that the majority of a hive are worker bees who can change in to queens if necessary (evolve in to Vespiqeen) while the actual males cannot. So in reality it should be REALLY hard to get a combee that CAN'T evolve, not the other way around.

I'm surprised you didn't look into Tsareena more. The reason they are all-female species is because the line is based off the fruit called Mangosteen. Mangosteens have an old nickname, occasionally being referred to as the Queen of Fruit. This also explains its exclusive ability, Queenly Majesty. While it's not really a physical reason, it does make sense from a concept point of view.

This usually results in the drone either being killed by the other bees or starving to death outside the hive :(

Exept that 'durinng the days of enlightenment' pink was actually considered the more masculine color, because of it's realtion to red 'the color of kings', while blue was pretty much universally associated with femenininty. Hence why a lot of religios iconography depics Maria in browns in blues. The notion of pink as a girly color and blue as a boyish one is only about 120 years old. If gamefreak really wanted to invoke that time period the color pallettes of frillish and jellicent should be swapped.

I'm a little disappointed for your reasoning for the Bounsweet line being all female. Its deeper than them being feminine looking. The mangosteen is sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Fruit" there is also a legend about Queen Victoria loving the fruit so much, that she would give 100 pounds to whoever could bring her fresh mangosteens, lastly, Tareena's name is a combination of Mangosteen and Tsarina, which is a female Russian Monarch. These are the reason why the Bounsweet line is so queenly.
@drgoo28256 жыл бұрын
It goes even further than that, the Purple Mangosteen plant itself does not reproduce sexually as all individuals are female. They reproduce simply through Apomixis(where each fruit grows with a seed inside without getting pollinated). Also that legend of Queen Victoria paying 100 pounds for a single one of the fruits was a myth started by an upstart botanist in the mid 1800s who is also the first one recorded for calling them "The Queen of Fruit". For some of them, it could be that, in nature, it's more important for females to survive for two reasons: to limit the male Gene pool to only those who can survive, and because multiple males can mate with a single female (over time). The female Pokemon tend to have better traits for survival while males have better traits for competition. This could explain the additional white stripe (for camoflauge) on female snover or even the spots in buisel (spots are inherently camoflauge, even if the buisel itself is not very camoflaugeable.)

You're contradicting yourself. If all they need is one female, they don't need as many females, fewer is necessary. If someone has better competitive traits, then they are better for survival. Good luck defending a village with mostly females against a group of males. Balance in life, is always key.
@ASwallie657 жыл бұрын
JoKing That's true, but females in nature are ALWAYS better suited for camoflauge. Male birds of all kinds are brighter colored for competition while females are dimmer colored (like brown) for protection. Millions and millions of years of evolution contradicts YOU, good man. (Or woman. Depends, are you camoflauged right now?)
@fist-of-doom4877 жыл бұрын
No it spreads out the gene pool, also in many cases the mother is the one watching over the children while the father goes looking for food or fighting. (Not always as their are also many animals that do the deed and then leave) but in either case camouflage serves as protection for the children as well as the mother. If they are watching the children she would need a way to hide herself and her little ones in emergencies. It's not a contradiction so much as varying circumstances.
@okamisuperblueyoshi17 жыл бұрын
He's not contradicting himself. It's a trait found in Lions (a Pride of females with a single/few males) and even Hippos as discussed in this very episode. Having many females in a group with a single male is very very common and more typical. Males in nature tend to fight one another, and as such you are incredibly unlikely to ever deal with a group of male animals.

The Japanese name "Vulgina" (バルジーナ) is actually pronounced more like "vul-JEE-nah", so it doesn't rhyme with vagina. Pro tip: Japanese pokemon names are written phonetically, unlike words in English. Just plonk the Japanese spelling into Google Translate, and it can pronounce it for you pretty accurately. Computer voices aren't always the easiest to understand, though. But luckily Google Translate gives a transcription as well ("Barujīna" in this case). This combined with the computer voice probably helps a lot. It might also help learning a little bit about Hepburn transcriptions (the kind used by Google), to know better how all of the letters in "Barujīna" are pronounced exactly, and what that horizontal bar over the i means.

Raizin Except that a G in Japanese should be pronounced hard, like in goat. But Japanese Pokemon names aren't exclusively Japanese words, so in this case, becuz it comes from "regina", it is pronounced like a J, which is why it is "barujiina". I don't know why Google Translate pronounces it like a J, becuz I've never heard Japanese G's being pronounced like J's. But of course, I don't speak Japanese, so please let me know if there are actually words like that. As you said, Japanese is VERY phonetic, so it doesn't make any sense for a G to not make a hard G sound.

15:18 Although this is a bit off topic, I believe I see where the inspiration for Blanka of Street Fighter came from as well, although, I wouldn't have thought it would've come from a Shinto god, but from the hair, to the skin color, and his "elemental" superpower of lightning, it makes a lot of sense, I love how much Japanese mythology spices up their character creation/gameplay

Really? Couldn't put together that Tsareena's femininity comes from being based on the mangosteen, the QUEEN of fruit? Not blaming you. Just seems like something easy to find. I think Bulbapedia even mentions it in trivia. Why we didn't get a Durian, king of fruits, counterpart does feel odd, though. (Yes, I know some people refer to the Ferroseed line as durians, but they don't really share the Tsareena aesthetic and are bi-gendered).

@unclephil41127 жыл бұрын
Male bees are called drones, and only exist to spread the queens, and thereby the entire hive's genetic material. All worker bees are female, and the drones die as soon as they mate. As they produce no honey, have no stingers to defend the hive, as well as farmers having plans for how they want to breed their hives, drone comb is often disposed of.

Yeah, it's cacti, octopi, and pegasi. In Latin, plural -us is -i. And plural -a (feminine) is -ae. And plural -um (neuter) is, like the masculine, -i.
@raizin49086 жыл бұрын
+Space Command Coalition - "octopi" is considered wrong by purists, because the "pus" in "octopus" comes from Greek, not from Latin. It doesn't make much sense to apply Latin pluralization rules to a non-Latin word. So the preferred from is "octopuses" or, if you want to be pretentious and use the Greek plural form, you can use "octopodes". (Yes, this form is actually found in English dictionaries!)

The funny part about the origins of Jellicent's differences is that while the patterns make sense, the colours surprisingly don't. Historically speaking, pink, being a more pronounced colour, was used for boys, while the more dainty, subdued light blue was used for girls. It wasn't until the mid-20th century that the colours were swapped.

well yeah, why the heck is there a male Gardevoir? What's their difference?
@Inuyashalovek5 жыл бұрын
Boon Gardevoir’s name in Japanese is “Sir Knight”, and they have been around longer than the male only choice evo. Their design to me always looked like robes, akin to what a mage (or “special attacker”) might use, and their “hair” resembles a helmet. Given the rarity of dawn stones, I think it if for the best that you can have male Gardevoir (Same with how there can be female Glalie). But I also highly prefer Gardevoir over Gallade, and in having so many male Gardevoir it would be upsetting to suddenly lose them in future games, be it they becoming female or Gallades.

Minceraft Gamer The mega for Gardevoir pulls heavily from the Ballroom or ‘Princess’ style wedding dresses, yes, but their non-mega forms do not. They are based off principal dancers (which has both male and female practitioners) and perhaps guardian angels/magical knights. There is also a connection to a type of thin paper doll made in Japan that bares a resemblance but the name escapes me at this moment.

while Vulgina is very much hilarious, it makes a lot more sense how they got away with it in japanese cause the japanese writing better reflects the pronunciation. The name is written as バルジーナ, while if it was pronounced how most of us are inclined to read it, it would be バルジャイーナ. It only becomes a problem when u convert it to roman spelling because both become Vulgina
