The reason for the train switches thing is that it is supposed to be funny! As a kid I was easily amused and I laughed a lot at this. The train station looks realitively realistic, the 1st switch looks exactly like what you would expect from an old fashion train switch and for a breif moment I forgot I was playing a Mario game much less a Paper Mario game. But then at the very end they throw in an unrealistic and stereotypical Mario switch with a cartoony reveal and I was broght back to reality or non-reality as I laughed and said oh that kind of switch!

5:27 A personal complaint I have about the audience thing as well is that pulling the focus down to the audience forces your attention to them and interrupts gameplay, forcing your attention also removes the skill that was involved with always keeping an eye on them yourself. It’s no longer this interesting mechanic that is always hovering over you and YOU need to keep an eye on things and learn to do so in the back of your mind the game literally stops to warn you about it AND give you time to identify, it was more interesting when I actually could miss it and get hit because I wasn’t paying attention, or panic because I didn’t know how long they’d ben holding the item up and in my panic hit someone throwing help…. You say you don't care about the frame rate change much, but it honestly probably contributes heavily to your issues with the menuing from your first issue, so it may be affecting your enjoyment more than you realized. I always prefer menus that run at 60 fps+. Just that much more snappy
@MarioMastar2 ай бұрын
actually the menu issues aren't caused by framerate, but by delays in when the game chooses to receive input. Rendering graphics 30 times a second vs 60 times won't slow a game down for more than 1/60th of a second at most. The issue with the menus is that the developers force you to wait for cues to pass before you can advance the state that you were able to skip in the original. like you have to wait for the entire star Piece jingle to finish playing where as before you could skip it, same for the emails and ESPECAILLY when you heal HP and FP. Before, they would all restore at the same time, but now, for reasons beyond knowledge, they all restore ONE at a time. turning a 3 second animation to a 10 second one. It seriously adds up over the course of the game, to the point I'd sometimes deliberately avoid getting triple shines just to not waste the time (I'm near full health anyway).

Overall, it has sort of a "farewell" vibe since your adventure takes place in Rogueport and not in the Mushroom Kingdom. Anyways, great video man :) I hope Paper Mario 64 gets a remake as well.
@sirskylight79015 ай бұрын
This may sound sort of nitpicky, but there were certain animations in the game that felt sort of off. Don't get me wrong, the new animations are great. It's how the remake's version of some of the old animations looked. Mainly, the animation for the superguard. It looks a lot slower than the original. The original had Mario and co. spin fast multiple times then gradually slow down, but the remake's superguard is just a single slow spin. I know this is a small detail, but to me, it felt like the superguard lost some of it's original charm because of it.
@alexhirsch57385 ай бұрын
I think for me which is better depends on what you want. I think the remake is undeniably a better casual experience, especially for first time players. But I think the hard-core fans, the modded community and challenge runners are still going to prefer the GameCube version for its faster text speed, ease of modding, and tenure. I'd reccomend the remake to anyone whether they've played the original or not, but the GameCube original isn't going to be beat for purists. Unless they patch the game with text options, then maybe there's a chance.

These aren't Paper Mario fans... There's nothing wrong with the 6 games, yet these guys act like you castrated thier mother if you mention any game after TTYD, even if you're enjoying it. No offense, but this comment along with many others I've seen just shows you don't know a thing about top-level PM players. Kappy and Bringle alone, both of whom have next to no issues with the framerate and only brought it up in their blind playthroughs, have done multiple challenge runs on the remake already. There have been categories like Pre-Hooktail and even Prologue Pit runs without Superguards and/or Mega Rush P for over a decade. Speedrunners are determined to find new exploits to save time on playthroughs, and the original for the longest time was thought to be unbreakable, before glitches like jump storage and palace skip were found. Some may be Japanese exclusive, like clipping into the Rogueport Sewers teleporter room, but others like Ultra Hammer early were not only discovered in all regions, but the newer method is easier to pull off.

Slow text speed, yes; slow UI interactions, yes; there's one more element of slowness that really gets my goat, and that's movement. I do not understand why Mario has to slow to a halt in midair if he falls too far, or why the little Yoshi has to accelerate from zero. Neither of these feel consistent with the spirit of Mario's platforming roots. The Yoshi thing is especially problematic and I have to wonder how it made it through testing; so many things were made easier about this game, but going over gaps has never been harder! @@brianking9424 I believe the japanese version it was frogs, but it was a specific type of frog that people in other places don’t usually have and thus wouldn’t recognize as a “frog” so they changed it to “crickets” in the original english release. Here they changed it to a more recognizable frog sound and then they changed the text to match it.
@MarioMastar2 ай бұрын
Well, mostly just the Frog thing due to a misunderstanding. ALL versions were changed to handle Vivian being transgender more sensitively. A thing that people miss is Japan didn't make Vivian transgender in the original to support LGBTQ+ before it's time. they did so to make FUN of the character, hence why Beldam insults her by calling her a "MAN". In the remake, Beldom no longer insults her gender choice instead choosing to drop the topic and complain that they need a more fitting title for the trio. Birdo had the same sh8t happen to her for 30 years and to this day people STILL insult her for allegedly being trans because of a JOKE that was meant to mock her. There was no respect shown back then, (heck being GAY in Japan was considered very taboo and oftne made fun of as well, it was NOT acceptable back then when they made the game no matter how much revisionists want to believe it). Though that said, I think the Spanish version did legitimately consider having her trans, but only because they translated it directly and not because of anything political. In modern time, all of them handle it respectfully. Spanish didn't have to change the dialogue much as it already was inoffensive though.
@Gold_Yoshi2 ай бұрын

@MarioMastar2 ай бұрын
XD TTYD was always "too easy" but of course the Remake is EASIER when most people watch Koops's videos on peril strats then literally do that and go "At least it's not DANGER Mario" Like they didn't just get someone else to trade them a level 100 mewtwo and brag about how they can steam roll the game cause it's "a SHINY mewtwo"..... I personally banned Peril and danger strats cause I wanted to make the most of what the game offers. You'd be amazed at how much more interesting it is when you try to max out FULL HP Mario's attack power and see what you can do. I was even legitimately using Ms Mowz's def piercing slap and had to use Bobombast a few times. SO much more fun than just "Lol Danger Goombella/Koops/Yoshi go brrr." like these so called "Veterans" do.... (actually I never used Multibonk more than like twice the whole game, and never equipped Power bounce, but mostly cause I just don't like those badges... not because of a restriction, just personal preference).
@CountShaman2 ай бұрын
@@MarioMastar True. Granted, even without danger strats, you are never really short of options to demolish the game. Power Lift alone flattens the difficulty like pancakes, especially when used for Yoshi Kid and Power Bounce, and Sweet Treat can keep you alive pretty much forever. I honestly think Paper Mario could use more bosses that really challenges your resourcefulness and doesn't just get flattened by one strategy every time. Heck, the first time I played TTYD, which is a casual run, the only thing that actually posed a threat to me in the main story was the X-Yux. Prince Mush's fight is an amazing addition that gives us the exact type of challenge the game needs, but it could've been more of a commodity. Same case with Culex 3D, where the Mario RPG remake could've taken more advantage of the fact that you can swap allies on the go like that boss did.
@AkameGaKillfan777Ай бұрын
@@CountShamanWhile people overrate the difficulty of the original(Power Rushes were a third of the price and it was easier to get a lot of Pianta tokens in the Plane game) X-Yuxes were worse because they had a 100% chance of immobilizing you if you didn't guard or superguard their normal attacks. The multi-shot attack that hits both Mario and his partner can immobilize them, but not as much. So them along with Dayzees are the only enemies in the game that can literally stunlock you.

The censorship of the Goombas hitting on Goombella wouldn't bother me on its own, but then they kept Flurrie's intro completely intact. The Goombas creeping on Goombella was used in the original specifically to show they were the bad guys, but a "good guy" protagonist is still allowed to literally assault Mario on-screen? That sends a horrible message. Why in the world is that still allowed?
@MarioMastar2 ай бұрын
Oddly yeah, the Goomba trio flirting wtih Goombella is the ONLY change they made when it came to the characters flirting... they literally kept every other instance of it intact, even the Goomba who's trouble is to literally date Goombella. (though in fairness, every other partner absolutely wants him destroyed for insulting them). Yeah it was odd to change that. Though I AM glad they softened the "addicted mother" scenario with having her instead rant about her husband being a terrible writer and the kid agreeing with her. The original hit way too close to home for a lot of people and wasn't appropriate as humor.

I assume that the Switch version is best for a casual play through, while for speed-running and challenge runs, the GameCube version is best. For example, my friend wanted to do a challenge run on the Switch where he only plays as Mario and lets his partners get KO’d, but after beating an enemy or running away, he realized that the Switch version would give the partners 1 HP, so he couldn’t do the challenge run unless he let the enemy attack first to KO the partner for EVERY battle. For the text, I say that in addition to re-adding the Dialogue Log, the Settings menu should have the following options added: -Music Volume: [0---------100] -Voice Volume: [0---------100] -SFX Volume: [0---------100] -Nostalgic Tunes: [Off|On] -Text Speed: [Slow|Normal|Fast] -Menu Sensitivity: [Slow|Normal|Fast] -Maintain Auto-Advance: [Off|On] -Maintain Fast-Forward: [Off|On] -Combat Difficulty: [|Normal|Double Trouble|Peril Panic|Impossible] Auto-advance would allow text bubbles to automatically advance within a short time after the current text finishes generating. Fast-forward would significantly increase the speed of text generation, advancement, and character animations during dialogue while enabled (think like modern Persona titles). The Nostalgic Tunes option would eliminate the need for a badge to enable the classic OST where applicable. The Combat Difficulty mode names are examples based on fan challengs from the Gamecube version: -Double Trouble: Double enemy attack. Double enemy HP. Quadruple Pain. (Unlocked by beating the game once) -Peril Panic: 1 HP and a dream. (Unlocked by beating the game once) -Impossible: *7* Crystal Stars. *0* advantage. *3* percent chance of victory is a generous estimate... (Unlocked by 100% completing the game once; must be chosen at start and is locked for whole playthrough) As for the particulars on Impossible: -Mario's level is set to 0 and enemies never give Star Points. --Max BP is set to 0 instead of 3 ---Attack FX G is moved to Boggly Woods. -Normal battles only drop 1 coin each, and Clear Bonuses only give 20% as much money. Shine Sprites on the field are invisible and uncollidable, effectively removing them. Inventory space set to 0. --The Strange Sack instead holds a unique secret; whatever is inside permanently improves Superguards (timing starts slightly sooner for every attack, and attacks that couldn't be countered this way before are now Superguardable). -Star Power is permanently set to 0. -Heart blocks are all invisible and uncollidable. --The only way to recover HP and FP is to sleep. -The in-battle Swap Partner command is disabled. -Merlee's charms all cost 1,000x as many coins. -Guard timing is universally set to 0 frames. (Superguards are unchanged, outside of the altered Strange Sack) -Game Over automatically kicks you to the title screen. Impossible progression concessions: -After defeating Gus at any point prior, talking to Ishnail in the Chapter 2-3 intermission allows him to tell Mario a secret code directly. Talking to Peeka in Westside Goods after this will directly trigger her questions without buying anything from the shop. -Both Iron Clefts now have only 4 HP each, but their battle dialogue occurs as normal. -As a bonus, all Journal data (including the Tattle log) is fully unlocked at the start.

I actually like their change about restarting battles if you die because I usually use 5hp or 1 damage increase method and forgetting to save after a while. This saves me from losing hours of progress.

The Switch Remake was my first ever playthrough of this game, so I legitimately did not notice or feel like the text was slow or the battle UI felt weird. It just feels normal and fine, so i wouldn't say it's a fair criticism that makes it bad, just different than how it is in the original that only fans of the original will notice.

For the first bad change, I feel like the just removed "button buffer" since you need to press exactly when the menu animation stop or else the game doesnt take your input. But I agree, exploring the menus and all feel so clunky and uncomfortable to use, I really hope the fix the slow text speed and menus clunkiness. Heck they could just map the text rewind on R or L too and would be prefect...

I think my least favourite "Why the heck??" moment in this remake is the deceleration Yoshi experiences across every. single. staircase. and. ledge. I suppose it's time for tube mode's redemption, with its sharper turning angles! But ooohh boy this remake was a treat. That condensed and expanded fast travel system was incredible.

I’ve noticed that about the switch in both versions, though I always assumed that it made more sense that the monsters covering it could move the mechanical switch and only really cover the blue switch

I really liked the Bow cameo in Poshley Heights as well as the Parakarry cameo in the intro (and now the ending and credits too!), but aside from those two instances, the appearances of the PM64 partners are pretty sparse - in fact the only one I noticed aside from the obvious cameos was the photo you pointed out, and even then you're the reason I even know it's there. I would've added the other party members from PM64 as cameos in the game as well - even letting you talk to Parakarry, who already makes an appearance in the game.

I agree that the Crystal Stars don’t look as good in the remake, finally someone else mentions it!

They look neat, but in the original they had this sort of otherworldly charm to them tbh-
