Great information and video man. Don't forget trades 😀. Trading spare males, common species, or extra slings is a great way to improve your collection. I would often buy several slings at a time and once I got a female or 2...I would trade the rest for other species that I wanted. It also allows for meeting or getting to know other keepers. Then of course there are egg sacs....plenty of T's is nice, but caring for a large egg sac of slings is time consuming. Trade off those extras and get more variety in your collection. Great vid man, keep up the good work.
@tarantulacollective4 жыл бұрын
trades! brilliant! i totally forgot to mention trading! thanks for the comment!
@dprofessor32384 жыл бұрын
@@tarantulacollective No problem man. We gotta stick together as a community 😀. With exotic haters (PETA and other groups), FSGW, import restrictions etc. we as keepers have to stay as united as possible. Not only does trading help this, it helps make connections like the one we just made😃. It also helps keep up species diversity in our own collection as well as others. Introducing new bloodlines etc. But, personally I think that the connections with other keepers is the big bonus. Awesome stuff man.

A lot of this is true! Patience is KEY! I've spent the last year picking up specific species...sexing tgem...matching up pairs ect. Just so I can eventually get into hobby breeding. I started with a lot of slings and lije you said...they GROW! Eventually. Your couple shelves turns into an entire room fast. This hobby is amazing and addictive but patience and a good ledger are must haves. And a good vendor or two. If you can find a good vendor or two and constantly support them with your business...the good ones will look out for you as well. I have a lot of great freebies in my collection!

Awesome content, Richard! My secrets for having a growing tarantula and scorpion collection: 1. being in good terms with my wife. This is the most important one. 2. keep on the look out on tarantula communities on people quitting the hobby or rehoming Ts. They usually sell their entire collections on the cheap. 3. start breeding feeders. The cost of buying feeders adds up. Fast.

Another way to go about the hobby is to specialize. Like deserts? Try to focus on the more arid loving species. Always pictured yourself in a hammock in the rainforest? Maybe focus on those amazing arboreals from South America, or Asia. This hobby is literally what you make of it. You can go nuts with amazingly detailed bioactive enclosures, or stick to bare bones where the spider is the landscaper and crown jewel. I went from 1 adult that I've had for years to 8 slings that have kept me company during a surgery recovery. Never would have happened without Richard, Petko, and Big Tom. Thanks for your time and info. Please keep 'em coming.

Yeah, definitely makes a lot of sense? Great advice. I've got 7, tarantula's and a Horsefield tortoise which is all I can handle at the moment. As I'm a single working mama of 4, children. I have a busy routine every day scheduled, so it's been easy to fit in all my T's care as well as my tortoises. Everything is kept on my mobile phone, notebook/ calendar. So very easy for me to keep up to date, keep track, I don't have a lot of money, so alot of my enclosures I've made using pack lunch boxes, CD's cases or some one has offered me there old T's enclosure. So, I've been very lucky that way, so far? Definitely saves on my financial budgeting. I do, and have learnt an awful lot from watching your channel. 😊👍🏾❤️🕷️🕷️ Thank you so very much. I am contentedly enjoying the two I have. Though there are several others I want too, I currently don't have space for them, so I'm going to wait to get them. My husband and I are working on getting into our own place. We'll have an entire room dedicated to exotics at that point and I'd then be able to get more. I am enjoying every moment with the two I have. I can sit and watch them do literally nothing for a while, admiring their beauty. My GBB was up to some silly antics earlier this evening, moving and pushing substrate around, pushing on his decorations, and webbing around. It was very entertaining to watch and try to figure out what he was doing lol. I need to check out that ap. With everything I have going on, I tend to forget the dates they molted last, so that would definitely help me remember that information!

Currently at 6 Ts and stopped buying for now. I'll wait till I am sure that I can accommodate a larger collection and then order in bulk. I intend to order a few mystery boxes from top sellers - I'll probably obtain a few hobby staple Ts and save money (you get like 120-150% worth of what you pay depending on the dealer). I might even cut on delivery cost if I arrange to pick up the boxes at the expo (there's one happening regularly at a place I can see from my house). This would probably bring me to around 25 Ts (and all would be slings).

The key to a big collection is not being able to stop! But I get it about paying attention to those you already have. For instance, my Avic Metallica juvenile moves every time I sneeze. Seriously, if I sneeze two or three times, it moves onto the air vent, directly across from me.

@mattmeyer71204 жыл бұрын
This video is on point and I can relate to everything said. A couple of points I want to expand on though. On setting aside time for husbandry, I'm going to start experimenting with daily maintenance as opposed to specific days. The thought being for a large collection, or breeding and raising spiderlings for sale, I can space everything out so I spend an hour a day or less instead of giving up a Saturday or a Wednesday after work. The larger the collection, the more complex this will be and I'm going to leverage my background to make an Oracle like logistics system for this endeavour (I'll let you know how that goes). Also, for any collection over 30, I would highly recommend breeding your own feeder insects. Finally, SHOP AROUND! I can't stress this enough, I saved $300 when I bought my P. sp Sabah Blue, 50% when I got my P. sp Akcaya, and over $450 when I tracked down B. simoroxigorum. Buying in bulk is preferred to save shipping cost, but if I have to pay an extra $40 for shipping from a second vendor to save hundreds on a tarantula species that I'm going to get regardless, I will do it in a heart beat. Also, dont be afraid to reach out directly to the dealer to try and negotiate package deals or QTY discounts. The worst thing they can do is say no, but a lot of the ones I have purchased from worked with me when I was ordering small groups at a time.
