I would like to suggest Another Earth, its not necessarily apocalyptic it is more of a philosophical exploration of "another earth" suddenly appearing and orbiting our sun and the orbital patterns criss cross close enough and the implications that arise from such a cosmic surprise. • 4:37 - If you like really slow movies with nice visuals like _Melancholia,_ then you'll like _Tree of Life_ which was the most boring movie in history, but had a ( _very_ ) long segment in the middle of nothing but nice random visuals. • 8:39 - Actually, _Sunshine_ is indeed technically a horror because of the supernatural stuff. • 12:13 - Those aren't moon-pirates, _they're whalers on the moon, they carry a harpoon, but there ain't no whales, so they tell tall tails and singing a whaling tune._ • 14:57 - _Knowing_ was fine. 😛 He was also in another adaptation of _Left Behind_ (not space-y, but still apocalyptic). • If you like space-apocalypse movies, you'll like _These Final Hours_ it's very dramatic and moving. There's also the mini-series _Childhood's End_ which leaves you with a very heavy and oppressive feeling.

Firstly, i also love apocalyptic movies, of any kind but space ones are interesting, havent seen melancholia, but seen most of these. Surprised you didnt include the Core, one of my favs. I watched sunshine last night, and didnt love it, i didnt like that the characters were really introduced and even the plot for me could have been introduced better. The fact-it did become horror at the end was a surprise and it felt out left field, also 2012 is good. I also didnt love 3022, just didnt always make sense to me, and similar to sunshine, characters werent introduced well enough for me, i mean Miranda Cosgroves character didnt even get a chance. But love this video! Life is a good one too! 👍🏻🌚

@TP lol sometimes films create their own reality and you just have to immerse yourself in it instead of trying to apply logic to everything. Not all films take place in our reality some take place in a dream state in order to illustrate it’s themes. Melancholia is a film about depression, and there’s not a lot of things more depressing than us being alone in the universe.

Melancholia hit me hard the first time I saw it. Which would be the only time I've seen it.. it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. And one of the most impactful films to me personally. That ending scene basically took my breath away. I've always been scared of an asteroid hitting earth, or a space explosion, etc killing off earth ever since I was a child, and this movie captured that kind of fear, and nihilistic depression I've felt throughout my life often. Such a strong movie. Now the funny thing is, with a movie I consider a masterpiece, you'd think I would surely see it more than once, but I'm scared of ruining that first time experience I had with the film. Like maybe certain things I remember about the film are actually different or something. Idk. Really strange, so I can't explain it. But when I saw that film, I was in a certain head space.. and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Very happy to hear you mention it lol

As a dedicated fan of science fiction, this video fills me with life. :3 1) Melancholia didn't really do it for me. :/ 2) Now I want to watch Aniara. 3) I rewatched Interstellar last year as part of a "Biggest Sci-Fi Films I've Seen Between 2013 and 2020" retrospective and gained a greater appreciation for it than I already did. I was struck by how eerily it felt like the current state of the world. 4) Did you know that the reason the Sun is dying prematurely in Sunshine is because it's been "infected" by a Q-ball? 5) I'd watch The Wandering Earth again, but only with friends. 6) And another movie on my "Biggest Sci-Fi Films I've Seen Between 2013 and 2020" retrospective. Of the films on that list, Ad Astra was the one where my opinion changed the most. I was disappointed when I first saw it, but gained greater appreciation for it after the retrospective. 7) Hmm, going to have to give Greenland a look. 8) Yeah, going to have to give Knowing a hard pass. 9) Hmm, going to have to give 3022 a look. As to the tenth entry on this list, Life (2017) is definitely a solid choice. Perhaps The Midnight Sky from last year? Or Mad Max: Fury Road?

Your comment that "The World cannot fathom a World Without a World or without it!" [ at 2 minutes] Struck me as amazing. Why? Because the IMMENSITY of Space and the IMPERSONALITY of Nature - a hugeness that renders Humanity and Human ideas of good and central insignificant is the very Central Recognition of HP Lovecraft's concept of Cosmicism*, the numimousity of Horror people feel when confronting the tininess of Earth and the Monsters that await us "out there". Most folks think “Tentacles and Monsters’ when thinking about Lovecraft, but that is an uniformed misunderstanding. Think about Tippi Hedren tip toeing upstairs in The Birds terrified by what she may find… That indicates the type of thing HL sought to evoke in his stories. You indicated you love of Space based End of The World tales has a real link to HPL and Cosmicism. * en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmicism “Cosmicism and humanism are incompatible.” HPL and Cosmicism see also What Is Cosmicism?: The Philosophy of Lovecraft kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2eqi6KCqJxgjpY

I was so fortunate to see The Wandering Earth on the big screen during it's limited US release and the CGI didn't really hold up for me. If this one ever gets a Hollywood remake, I think the visuals could definitely be improved (predominantly in the disaster set pieces) but the space stuff with the planets did look beautiful! Recommending Claire Denis' HIGH LIFE, because your list needs some female directors! It's not technically an apocalypse movie, but definitely has the despair and hopelessness of an apocalypse movie. It's also REALLY weird and very R-rated (if you're sensitive to violence, bodily fluids and r*pe then definitely don't watch)

Not exactly an apocalyptic movie but if you like space visuals in general, 2001: A Space Odyssey is amazing. No CGI either. I know it's not for everyone but I think it's just a beautiful movie overall and highly impressive considering when it was made.

A super tip if you like spectacular visuals...one of my three favorite films is called "Chushingura" directed by Inagaki. It is japanese, as my other two favorites 'seven samurai', and 'sanjuro', by kurosawa.

1981's Outland - Sean Connery a marshall on Jupiter's moon and 1984's Night or the Comet- Haile's comet type of event, everyone watching the comet turns to dust. If you haven't seen, you'll probably like them. Little dated but still great.

Aniara is quite possibly the most depressing movie I’ve ever seen. My husband and I had a “space movie” marathon and we watched Interstellar, Ad Astra, and Aniara. My husband who absolutely hates depressing movies LOVED Aniara which I did not expect and I was left feeling so so sad and upset 😂 Interstellar makes me sob every time I watch it.

Just found your channel! I'm probably gonna binge over the next few days because I'm loving your POV on films. I do have a suggestion. It's not really space or apocalypse horror, but have you seen Coherence? It's kind of an existential/psychological thriller spurned by outer space events

Knowing? I didn't know that was a space apocalypse movie. I would have rather picked Total Recall the remake. An ever better space apocalypse movie could be a big-budget remake of The Lathe of Heaven, if an ambitious director ever gets around to it. Until then we'll have to settle for the two made-for-TV productions of Lathe.

I didn't see the wandering earth. I had heard about it and was poisoned against it. I heard about it because it was pinned the "highest budget film China every made". I'll watch it now. I love Ad Astra so much. I loved it on first watch. It's so chill. I watch it pretty often. I love Aniara as well. Jesus Christ that movie. It's brutal af. So amazing. This video has inspired me to chat about what films I really enjoy. Thanks Sarah.

What’s your opinion of Moon?If you haven’t seen it,let me tell you it’s worth it,at least to me.Also,I think it’s really important to let you know about these two absolutely, completely superlative, really, really super-duper thought-provoking movies I saw called Deep Impact and Armageddon.Ha ha.just kidding about those last two,but Moon is still very good. When I gave it some thought,I realized that maybe it doesn’t really fall into the category of movie you’re discussing, but then I thought about it again and felt that, yes,it is a kind of space apocalypse movie, only the apocalypse here is a more personal, existential type but still bought about by space,or in this case the consequences of being in space.

I definitely know what you mean about scratching that apocalyptic space itch even though the movie isn't super great. 😂 I've always loved space apocalypse movies, back in the day when Netflix wasn't a thing and I lived with my parents, they had Knowing and Armageddon on DVD and I watched both of them ALL the time even though they are sooo cheesy and overall not great. I just loved the concept. I've watched Armageddon so many times since the early 2000's I can't watch it anymore. When I was a child I was so fascinated with everything space related, I had a deep fear of an asteroid colliding with Earth after reading about some speculations in a science magazine. Now I'm just fascinated.

Have you ever seen Coherence? Its on Hulu right now. Psychological thriller, my favorite genre. Edit: If you're going to watch it and you haven't seen it yet, please, take my recommendation and don't look up anything about this movie. It's much more impactful if you know nothing about it.

This reminded me of a pretty great book series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. I read it like 10 years ago or something so it might be more directed towards teenagers but I think it's still worth a look. Anyway, the first book is called "The world as we knew it". An astroid hits the moon and pushes it towards earth which causes a lot of natural catastrophies. We follow a family of four, trying to survive in a world that changes drastically from what they were used to.

Melancholia was set very low volume wise, kept turning it up higher and higher..........suddenly realised in the last 5 minutes of the film as to why be warned it was goosebump worthy (must have been amazing at the cinema) wonderful film...watch it when you are feeling low.

Great list -- Do things like the Cloverfield Paradox qualify? Possible 10th movie, similar to Melancholia though not as pretty - "4:44 - Last Day On Earth" with Willem Dafoe. Very strong ending.

Love your videos! Random but...my therapist suggested during our 1st session I stop watching horror movies to reduce anxiety which I'm not going to listen to because I have no anxiety related to them in any way. I'd like to see a video on horror content and psychology given your background in both if you're comfortable with it. Not sure which channel it would fit on though lol. If you're not comfortable speaking on this I understand. I'm just very curious on your opinion about this. :)

Literally nothing about the video really but technically, couldn’t Wall-E fall under the category of space apocalypse? Because it takes place in space and in a way it’s kind of post apocalyptic or at the end of the apocalypse? I don’t know just a thought 😂😅 I love your videos by the way I’ve been watching for maybe four years and I always look forward to watching more of your horror content and see you broadcast your thoughts and opinions!

I saw "Melancholia" at a private screening in Los Angeles. Kirsten Dunst was there for a Q&A afterward. It's a beautiful film. I have it on Blu-Ray and even have an original one-sheet poster hanging in my kitchen. You should check out other Lars von Trier films. "Breaking the Waves", "Antichrist", and "Dancer In the Dark" are just a few other feel-good films he directed. Great video!

Fun fact, I watched the knowing back in 2007/8? At one of those free movie review premieres and im not sure if the ending is the same but originally it ended with the entire planet like exploding and everyone dying, they didn't even have the movie fully completed because the last 5-10 minutes were incomplete cgi like watching a video game.

A very confusing but visually interesting movie is Color out of Space. It doesn't take place in space but something out of space is the threat. It's more of a horror movie. I don't know if it's an "apocalypse" because it mainly focusses on one family but it's worth a watch :)

So I am fascinated with space and I always found apocalypse movies interesting (zombie apocalypses tend to be my favourite) but the only space apocalyptic movies I’ve seen are Knowing and Greenland. Knowing wasn’t the best movie ever but it really messed me up (despite the cheesy ending). And then I watched Greenland with my parents literally a couple weeks ago and that messed me up even more. I personally liked the ending of Greenland because it felt optimistic and disaster/apocalypse movies tend to make me have an existential crisis

It’s not a sci-fi or horror and not in space BUT this list made me think of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which is one of my favorite movies ever! It’s definitely good if you want a more “realistic” apocalypse (no human optimism hahah) and the end made me so emotional!
