1. Fill up on non starchy vegetables or fruit then move to starch 2. 50/50 veg/starch 3. Reduce added sugar and salt because they cause overeating 4. Eliminate animal foods 5. Eliminate higher fat plants 6. Eliminate added oil 7. Eliminate high calorie dense foods- muffins, dried fruit, biscuits, popcorn, puff cereal- anything processed etc 8. Don't drink your calories including smoothies. Eat veg as and fruit whole 9. Eat until you are comfortably full, don't starve or stuff yourself 10. Avoid sedentary and exercise at least 30 minutes moderately a day. Heavy workouts aren't necessary. Weight loss happens in the kitchen

Weight loss comes from eating the right food...yes! I did a video on how I lost 70 lbs just changing to a plant based diet, with no exercise, no counting calories, no “dieting,” no eating below the hunger drive. Once I lost 55 lbs I wanted to move more and started walking, which I continue to do because I like it. Moving the body is important, without a doubt. But the biggest changes for me came from changing what was on the end of my fork.

I agree with you and same here. I found as soon as I changed what I was eating I was losing more weight despite less exercise. All my walking now is natural stuff like to and form the train station and the shops. I have the energy to do that. I used to go for hour walks and they did nothing for me.

That's so true, Last year I walked 8-13 miles a day including a moderate hike in a canyon and 2 hours at the gym doing cardio, weights and a workout class, ate sem-healthy but still drank a coke a day and the scale hardly budged. Now I'm stuck at home due to a back injury and can hardly move but I'm losing weight due to eating healthy whole foods such as fruit and vegetables and have lost more in a month than I did the 5 months I busted my ass off last year!!

Nice summation of the great work that Dr. McDougall does. Everyone should watch this video. The fact that terrible ketogenic/paleo/low-carb diets are the new fad is depressing. The answer is so simple... yet, as Dr. McDougall himself says: "People like to hear good news about their bad habits."

"You don't need to do 2 hours of mountain climbing..." True, but I have a lot of weight to lose, so after I sorted out my diet I decided to accelerate the process by hitting the hills for a few hours a day after work. I've found that I lose around 1lb of fat for each 3 hours I spend in the mountains. Accelerating the process like this is great for morale, and I've lost up to 9lbs in a week. Clearly this won't be practical or desirable for most, but if you enjoy a form of moderate exercise like hillwalking or cycling that can be sustained for a few hours at a time, it sure does speed things up.

Great short and concise vid. Only thing I’d add is that whilst diet is the main factor in weight loss, doing exercise such as a walk or weight training is super important for your body as well as your mind. I definitely encourage more activity but not with the goal of weight loss, just to incorporate it as a new part of your life 🙏

Been almost 100% plant-based over a year. Have only lost 20 lbs and am very discouraged as I need to lose at last 40 more. I have a vegetarian cardiologist who recommends Greek yogurt and tofu so I add more protein to my diet. I would disagree on the green smoothies. At least for people who want to get a high density of vitamins/minerals/fidonutrients via dark green leafy vegetables like kale. At that point eating greens as a smoothie is really not about calories but nutrient intake. The calories would be so low in the first place, and the smoothie help eliminate so much volume because of the amount of recommended nutrient intake from the greens is really not feasable for the average person even when boiling or cooking or eating those greens raw. The amount of greens you would have to ingest via a smoothie would still be high even if you throw in an apple before you worried about the calories. Plus smoothies do keep the fiber compared to juices. I can understand if you are making a smoothy primarily of fruits, but one of primarily greens is not a concern calorie wise. Smoothies are better for people who don't like green leafy vegetables.

Thanks for that. The starch solution always felt like a ton of bricks on my digestion until I found out that I can start my meals with fruit. I think it's got to do with the electrolytes ( potassium and sugar ) it provides for good blood circulation. Before going 100% starch solution I was drinking an electrolyte solution, and even now adding potassium chloride along with baking soda and salt in the right proportion ( 3/16 teasp. salt, 1/16 teasp. potassium chloride, 1/16 teasp. baking soda and 2 teasp. vinegar per cup of water ) makes the meals a-lot more palatable.
@alchemist585a6 жыл бұрын
Agree with 9 out of the 10 points. The exception is your explanation of the smoothie vs whole fruits. On weight basis one serving of fruit (say 100 grams) provides the same number of calories & the same amount of fiber whether taken as whole fruit or as a smoothie. The difference is that the smoothie will probably be digested a little faster and the rise the blood glucose level may be a little higher and may occur a little earlier than when taken as bites of whole fruit.
@WellYourWorld6 жыл бұрын
Ya sounds good. I think for some people smoothies open the door for consuming more, compared to if they’d eaten it whole and felt satisfied with less. But like for like as you explained it, probably not much weight loss difference.

As always I'm in agreement with him. The only thing he said that I would tweak is that I don't find smoothies to be bad...but that's ONLY if you don't find yourself eating more calories due to the smoothie not being filling enough. Dr. Greger, Dr Fuhrman....etc., all have smoothie recipes in their books. So, If overeating is not the case, then a smoothie is fine
@HH-xj8nh4 жыл бұрын
Yeah and I think what makes the smoothie effective is if it's more of a green smoothie, you know with greens, cucumbers, celery, parsley, ginger, for example, and water as the base.

Also, sure, in many cases eating the produce non blended is slower, and you can chew it, and you don't pulverize the cell walls and allow your GI tract to work it. But you take one of those Eat to Live smoothies and they're like, "a full bunch of kale plus a whole head of lettuce with half a banana and some berries"..... those smoothies take me TWO HOURS to finish. They're thicc, and they're not even sweet, and to be perfectly honest, there's no other way I will be eating a whole head of lettuce a day if not blended into oblivion.

I know this is late and you probably already know the answer, but for anyone else reading this comment... YES. If you hate beans, you don't have to choke them down to stick wtih a HCLF diet. There's protein in just about everything on a plant-based diet, so you'll still get plenty of protein eating foods like corn, oatmeal, rice, sweet peas, potatoes, veggies and more. There are also so many different types of beans and legumes that you might be able to find a variety that you actually like - or maybe find a way of preparing them that tastes better to you.

I gained weight when I went on a plant based diet a year and a half ago and have struggled ever since. I don't want to go back to a standard American diet and I won't because I felt terrible, but here's why I think I have gained weight: 1. I quit smoking about 6 months prior to that; 2. I am overeating (which I haven't experienced before); 3. I work at least 60 hours a week and am a full-time realtor; 4. I have ADHD; and 5. I have struggles being perfect. So.......that's a lot of excuses, but I honestly think that I that when I quit smoking and drinking Diet Coke (which is how I self medicated to boost my mood for the last 30 years (i.e. dopamine levels), I have now started to chase a dopamine boost with food and I gained weight. I know it sounds like a sorry excuse, but its how I function. I just have to figure out a way around this without going back to taking ADHD medicine.

Very helpful. One question: no tofu or tempeh?
@ValseInstrumentalist6 жыл бұрын
I've had fluctuating weight all my life--I was always generally 20-40 pounds overweight, hovering around 30, with a diet heavy in rich foods. Years ago I became quite svelte by eating basically only vegetables with a bit of tofu or cottage cheese. Then my job changed and I had access to free leftover catered lunches most days, so I went all the way up to 190. I went WFPB last year and lost twenty pounds with all starch and fruit, with little vegetables. But after weekly cheating with chocolates, fake chicken, and such, I'm back up to 180. Now I'm realizing that I need to conquer this plateau with more vegetables.

is brown rice or quinoa pasta included in the list of no=no's? It is processed and packaged. I just didn't hear you say the word "pasta", so I am hoping it's ok since it's not wheat flour
@WellYourWorld6 жыл бұрын
It should be ok unless it has weird additives or added salt, etc.

I am 315lbs. I think this will work for me. I was vegan and reverted back. Do you have a chart or something I can refer back to when planning meals and eating? If so can you sent it to me?

I know this is an older video, but I love to comment. In Dr. Mcdougall's Starch Solution it talks about a study with bread and adding it to your diet and so I don't fear bread. You were also mentioning guzzling HUGE amounts of calories with smoothies. My blender can hold maybe 4 bananas, a cup of mango, cup of kale and if I mush it down a bit of pineapple and I will be full for a long time. If you do the math, I don't see this as drowning in calories. And what a great meal for the hot days of summer. Maybe time to rethink the demonization of smoothies. It's like something that the old folks don't think the kids should be doing.

Can you do a vid of what a pound of rice is or fruit or beans etc
@WellYourWorld6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean calorie density of those items? I am due for another thorough calorie density video I suppose.
@soli48386 жыл бұрын
Well Your World yes. It is so helpful. I just counted the calories of the 6 ears of corn. Roughly it is 550 cal n 3.5 fat.

Thank you for this. I feel like Im doing everything for maximum weight loss already, but I think I've hit a plateau :( I've lost 16 pounds since Jan but I would love to drop another 20. I am going to take the advice on smoothies b/c I make a green one a couple times a week. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I'm going to trust the process.
@WellYourWorld6 жыл бұрын
Keep with it. Dr Goldhamer always says that women hold their weight much more efficiently than men. January is a short amount of time. I think you’re on the right track. Keep eating the low calorie density foods but don’t let yourself feel hungry or unsatisfied by depriving yourself of the whole starches.

Thank you! I definitely plan to stay on this path. I'm super active and feel like I'm eating the right amount of foods. I love the Vegan lifestyle all together and feel good. Your videos help keep me on track! :)

I’m having the same problem. That’s a lot of weight to loose since January. It took me 10 months to loose 20 pounds. I plateaued at 163 and I increased my exercise. I want to be around 140.I’m trying to burn around 500 calories and the weight is starting to come off again but it is a struggle. Walking is the best thing for me and making sure you get your heart rate up into fat burning mode. Hope you can find something that works for you.

When eating legumes like lentils and chickpeas, do they count as a starch? And can you combine them with other starches? For example...if I am doing the 50 50 plate, can I do 50 green veg, and then 1/4beans and 1/4rice? I want to add a cup of legumes to every meal,and just wondering if that technically accounts for most my starch? 😵
@daliajnani18772 жыл бұрын
Those are starches . They said to do. Plate of 50 50 which is half non starchy veg and half starchy veggie

Regarding smoothies and juicing. There is no difference in the calorie density of smoothies vs whole fruit. Think about it. I put an apple in a blender or I eat an apple. Same exact thing. Blenders don’t change calories. You just need to consume the liquified forms slower if you are concerned about things like blood sugar spikes. See Dr. Gregor's summary of the evidence based research on that one.
@WellYourWorld10 ай бұрын
I agree blenders don’t change calories but turning it into a drink makes it a lot easier to get more calories that you otherwise probably wouldn’t have managed to eat if left whole. My own personal smoothies are more calorie dense than the whole foods I eat because I include a lot of fruit and nuts, for example.

Thanks for this summary. Can you give some examples of the first half of the plate vegetable?

Erika Zimmermann. Cruciferous veggies (like any sort of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts) or greens (chard, kale, spinach, dandelion greens, etc.) would be great options.
