Can we get some applause for Mr Enter here? I mean, besides just getting this done (this being one of his biggest projects by far), he had to sit through each and every one of these themes. MULTIPLE TIMES, POSSIBLY DOZENS. If I tried to do anything like this I'd go crazy within a few hours. The quality, effort and time obviously put in to this automatically drew me in, and you still managed to make me pause the video(s) to get my laughs out at many points, even with having to just work with this shit that grates on one's hearing. For Ruroni Kenshin the English theme song is literally just a loosely translated version (changed slightly so it flows better) of the Japanese lyrics of the song. They also got someone who sounded very much like the original singer to sing the english version. Essentially all they did was copy the Japanese version of the theme song to the letter. Also, the visuals contrasting with the audio was done on purpose. This is in direct reference to the show. The show is about a former soldier in the Meiji restoration (like the Japanese civil war) trying to atone for his sins and live a more peaceful life.

cyberanimealien Anime reference the plot in their theme songs a lot more than cartoons. If something seems weird in an anime opening it probably is plot related. Some anime even put giant spoilers in their openings to increase the impact when the viewer gets to that part of the plot. Clannad and Ergo Proxy are prime examples of this.

SSofIreland It's the story of a wandering swordsman who befriends a woman named Kaoru, who owns a kendo dojo. It's about his rather dark past catching up to him, issues regarding the politics of the Meiji era of Japan.. It has lighthearted moments and that's a lot of the overall vibe.. But there is always something a bit more bubbling under the surface due to the political tensions, Kenshin's own demons, and everything that goes on over the series. It's very good, although it gets bogged down in filler toward the end. Watch it, and then watch the first four OVAs.. and finally the Kenshin Movie which is worth it for the soundtrack alone.

It's been years since I saw Ruroni Kenshin (it was on Toonami years back), but it's like the most unfitting song for an anime opening 7. It's at least a short theme song, still terrible though. 6. The animation equivalent of cancer, since these were both terrible shows 5. It's DA... NUTSHACK, IT'S DA... NUTSHACK!!! 4. Captain Planet had a 6th season? With disembodied singing lips? Looks like the Rocky Horror lips needed a pay check. Seems to suffer the same fate as Garfield did earlier. 3. I actually remember this show... this is the only thing I remember from this show... that's not a good thing. 2. Is he singing or just talking? I have no idea, I really really don't. Also, am I still the only person who thinks that the pterodactyl in this show looks like a Charizard? I'm sorry, I still think that. 1. The most un-Scooby Doo show, and he's going to sing this song ALL DAY LONG!!! That being said, Pickle and Peanut still has the worst intro in my opinion, though one I'm surprised isn't on here is that of Super Duper Sumos, which also has a terrible theme song in my opinion.

He used it as an example what a rap theme should sound like (4Kids) and how a a theme song should get you invested in the show (Angela Anaconda). Just look at his best theme songs list and the DP theme got number 9 and classified it as a "I definitely love this". And I agree. The DP theme is one of four rap songs that don't make me want to bash a radio in. The other three are Killer Bee's Jinchuriki Rap, Made to Love by Toby Mac, and Born Again by Newsboys.

Regarding the Rurouni Kenshin opening, there is such a thing called juxtaposition and this is what you're complaining about, Mr. Enter. The images of our lead character Kenshin fighting are contrasted by the tone and the lyrics because inside he is regretful for his actions and wants to seek a world where he no longer needs to fight. It's actually tonally appropriate for the story and the character.

I honestly find it bafflingly fascinating. I heard that the woman who sings it is like this weird "anime girl come to life" who you could pay very little money to come show up at your Otacon rip-off. She wasn't even like a fanservice girl, she was just, like, literally, if Misty from Pokemon just showed up and started to hang around. Can you imagine if conventions had professional people who pretended to be characters? Like in Disney. Although, ultimately... Yeah, no, I don't think it's appropriate for a show as serious and sincere as Samurai X. Sure, it's about Kenshin trying to find peace, but it's a show that has PTSD, war, and politics in it. It really doesn't fit.

4:20 (heh) to be fair, Rurouni Kenshin is about a samurai seeking for peace and redemption, and as such the calm music shows how he hopes for calmer, happier times. (More in depth, Kenshin used to be an elite merciless samurai. After a bloody battle, he decides to abandon his former life to become an wanderer in the country side, protecting those who can't defend themselves and trying to redeem himself from his dirty acts, vowing to never kill again. He then meets a girl, make friends and fight some new foes, but his past keeps seeking him.)

If you wanna harp on Freckles, do it because it's a (really) poor translation of a very good Japanese song. Not because the mood is mismatched because IT'S ON PURPOSE. Kenshin is about the juxtaposition of a war-scarred soldier doing whatever he can to keep the serenity of a peaceful era. It's lighthearted. Hell, aside from the action sequence of Kenshin murdering those dudes, the theme song itself is even lighthearted. The song suffers because, trying to be too close to the Japanese lyrics, the translation comes out making no sense- but hell, that doesn't make it BAD! I hope Enter actually watches the shows he reviews, because that was some major stupidity there.

I actually have watched it, and I can safely say, for the most part, the theme doesn't match the tone. Sure, even cutting out the dark bits and leaving only heartwarming development, it still doesn't fit the tone, because the theme feels like a moe slice of life schoolgirls harem romance, while, once again, even cutting out the darker parts, feels more like an adult life feel good drama.
