Not that long ago I put out a video talking about the Top 10 things that I love about my Porsche Cayman GTS. This time, I'm giving you the flip side of that coin, let's talk about the Top 10 things that drive me nuts about this car! These are the WORST quirks, characteristics or design choices on this car -- WHY IN THE WORLD ARE THEY LIKE THIS?!! I don't think these are deal breakers by any means, but it might make you think twice about whether you want to plunk down $100K+ for a Porsche.
Just my opinion folks, but I figured I should share my thoughts and impressions about these things after over 6 months of ownership. Let me know in the comments what you think, do you agree or are there other things about these cars that drive you mad? Am I making a big deal out of nothing?
If you can't handle all this negativity, go watch my other video where I talk about the Top 10 things I LOVE about my Porsche: • Top 10 Things I LOVE A...

Porsche entry and drive opening of the trunk and frunk on my 2023 Cayman S has worked fine and reliably, bit it took some practice to know where to put your hand. you have to place it in the middle of the front bumper directly in front of the Porsche crest on the hood and actually lightly touch the surface while you have the keys on you. For the rear trunk, again in the middle and not on the spoiler, but on the deck below that area where the model designation is. You have to actually lightly touch the car. Waving hand over the surface won’t activate the opener. Hope this helps

I love the video posted by that mechanic who stripped down a Cayman and a 911 and proved they were very much the same car underneath with a massive amount of shared parts. Of course the engine location and rear-seats/firewall being the key difference.

yeah, that was a very informative video. Even if my 982 (mild evolution of a 981) shares parts and the pedigree of an older 991 that's not too shabby at all. And the people who think a 911 is somehow better, are deluding themselves.

It sounds like yours was broken and had to be fixed. But in the video he is waving his hand across which isn’t the right way to use this feature. You have to place your hand in the spot recommended in the manual. I can see why you may just want to wave your hand across but it doesn’t work that way.

Here’s something that will make you rage. The HVAC controls work how you want if you don’t have any memory seats. So the 2ways and the buckets allow you to use the hvac controls as normal.

@@86drive86 LOL yup. Like i can kinda see their reasoning for doing it the way they did, but they really should have given people the option to make it so it remembers the previous setting rather than the one set to your seat position. Also in regards to the closing of the hoods, you cant slam the front hood cuz its not weighted like most other car hoods are (weight savings) and so you risk bending the hood if you try to slam it down. For the rear hatch, they ask you not to slam it because it may not close all the way as it's also not weighted. I didnt need to do that with my GT4 due to the big wing on it weighing it down so i could just close mine as normal. Take it with a grain of salt but this is what they told me at PECLA and i'm inclined to believe them.
@tobi_dg
@tobi_dg 5 ай бұрын
The option for HVAC would have been nice to choose the last setting or the one from the memory setting. But most of the time the memory setting is good. It’s always the perfect setting that I like. As far as slamming the frunk and trunk, yeah it’s a sports car where they try to minimize weight. Same with the 911 frunk.

2:40 I went with the power sport seats and not the sport plus type in your car because the lower bolsters are less prominent and I’ve heard it makes them a bit easier to get in and out of the car, and without excess wear the left bolster on the drivers side over time. I suspect the larger bolsters also make for less seat width (?)

P. Mok! I didn't even know about the no-touch frunk and trunk release, thank you for that! However, after trying this on my 2018 Cayman this evening, I figured it out! [Don't swipe your hand around, just hover in place!] Just hover your hand an inch away from the bumper below Porsche Emblem on the hood, or over ,the "Cayman" Lettering on the rear, and the respective frunk or trunk will open within roughly two seconds. ****This was tested in the garage while dry, so I don't know how well it works in the rain or snow.**** Subjective Opinion Regarding "HVAC": Although the "everything is a memory function" was frustrating at first, I now think it's one of the greatest features since memory functions began. I can set the positions of the seats, mirrors, steering wheel, PCM convenience settings, informational display, HVAC, and more to my key! Every-time I enter the vehicle using my programed key, and start the car, everything I'd ever need to adjust after a previous driver's modification will revert to my desired specification for everything without me needing to do a single thing. It's amazing, but it was a pita until I realized what was going on. What's more so, is I can also set additional seating and wheel configurations for different moods of driving. My typical key programming is to be seated upright and having the most control and access, with the "2" memory setting being a more relaxed position for longer drives, with the mirrors adjusted to match. Can't wait to find out what else my little 718 has yet revealed to me :)

Some of your issues I agree with and some I don’t. The condensation is common and it will be replaced if the moisture stays in. Need to get your car ceramic coated and paint correct to get the swirl mark and scratches out. No car comes with perfect paint. The Porsche seats are made to hung you and keep you in a good driving position. I have the LWBS love them. Overall good video.

I have 2023 Boxster GTS, the only comments I agree with is cup holders and reverse gear. To open frunk and trunk you have to pass hand (close to car) in front of Porsche logo for front and above the script in the back very slowly . I think they do this so it doesn't pop open if your close to car or washing car.

My 2024 GTS tail lights have condensation when I wash the car. It quickly disappears shortly after I finish washing it. The servisor said it is designed to vent and it seems to work and is not a problem for me. I worked in an auto assembly plant and we always had a problem getting the lights to be perfectly sealed. Apparently Porsche resolved that by adding venting rather than trying to have a completely closed system.

My 2¢ on proximity sensors for trunk opening, it’s definitely less of a wave and more of a place and hold briefly. The front one works every time for me. I have driven in my positions Rolls Royce Phantom, Ferrari 550 and an ENZO, Porsche 996 Turbo, BMW 3,6&7s. Myriad other cars & many trucks. None were without flaws. I am searching for a used 981 as a weekend tourer. Your views I take into consideration. However it is a machine and the sum of its parts are rarely perfect. I say enjoy what you have. Like the guys with big smiles I see driving older fairly worn out 97-04 Boxters, Mercedes SLs, 80’s Corvettes, 5.0 Mustangs & old Miata’s. If I had 100K then a 0:15 smartly used 911 would be in my garage. Until then I will take my measly 50K & find a lower mileage 981 & enjoy the heck out of it. I will accept its features & issues before the purchase. Thanks for your video view point. 🇺🇸

I have a 21 Boxster GTS 4.0, so I get where you're coming from, funny to watch RE shutting frunk - remember most every other car is front engine so the hood area is not sealed, but on the Porsche it is a sealed box with a very lightweight hood. There is nowhere for the displaced air to go (quickly at least) when you try to "close the hood fast". On a Boxster the same is true of the trunk lid, sealed small box. RE 18 way - those are not the comfort seats, they are "18 way Sport Seat Plus" with more adjustment, and memory than the manual "Sport Seat Plus". Comfort seats would be the standard "Sport Seat". RE Keyless trunk opening - a) it will time out after a week or so and not work until you unlock the car at the door handle and b) don't wave your hand, instead try putting your hand over the center of the bumper about 2 inches back from the hood or trunk seam. It takes a half to one second for it to recognize it and will open, and the sensor area is only about 2" x 2" so it is small RE Air Con, when you program the seats, etc, also program the aircon where you prefer it, then save the settings to button 1 or 2, as well as the Key button memory. I prefer this, since sometimes it is hot and I have the car cranked on high, but don't need it to start up that way next time. I do agree the cupholders, dipstick, and occasional light fogging is irritating but doesn't spoil the experience of flat 6 funness

Strange, I have a 718 Spyder since 2021 and have never had that condensation issue. Maybe I got lucky. The paint issue with the "yellow" marks appears to be rail dust, which is an issue with shipping (many of these cars sit at port for some time where nearby railroad dust is rampant), not a factory paint QA problem. You can use an iron remover to get those out (I did it on mine and it works like a charm). I agree with the Porsche Entry and Drive issue, had it before on previous Porsche and did not order it again. Climate Control: I believe you can set it to the memory of the key and it should remember that setting? Also another option I skipped since I have a convertible and climate control is not as useful.

Man-oh-man the 928S4 was hilarious and also possessed by demons (she called it "Christine"). The 993 since new would at times spew funky smells when revved high with the heater boxes on OR ever so often let an eye-watering, choking plume of gray smoke in the garage for like 2 seconds on cold start (Porsche fixed that). But, when I got hit in the 2006 997S in the rear at a stop light by an unlicensed driver going 55mph and knocked me into 2 cars and I climbed out with just a scratch bruise on my shin--we decided to buy keep buying them and laughing about the quirks. Great video, as usual, and it let's me know what we will laugh about next!

I’m with you… I have a 2024 718 Boxster Style Edition and I also have some issues Mine was built in the VW plant Osnabrück and the finish quality is not top notch for a PORSCHE… I do have condensations on the tail lights, also the paint was afoul and I did do the unwrapping of my car, so the problem was from factory. Also, I’ve had done a lot of reading and the paint issues in PORSCHE are very common as the paint is extra soft… I have the manual sports seat (2 ways) and mine is losing the hight, so often that sometimes in one drive I must regulate the seat (this is the most annoying issue I have), interior trim with some minor defects in the leather… and yes the reverse is somehow hard to shift, but for me the second worst thing is the lack of feel from the clutch pedal, so that, I still sometimes stall the car (after 10K Kms) and I’m in my 50s and always drove manuals cars… For plus 100K, I do agree the quality should be much better... but there is a greater feeling and that is when I slam the accelerator and the car “fly’s” whit so much composure and completely stuck to the road!... maybe slamming wasn't the right word, but how about this -- closing it in one swift and smooth motion, rather than having to lightly push it down, then using both hands carefully to press it down into the final locking position. That's what I want to be able to do, like any other car out there. Everyone saying that it's a special sports car and therefore "fragile" is on some kind of crack or copium. Honestly, I think it can probably handle that but it irks me that the salesman/dealer is basically telling you that you shouldn't do that.

Regarding the seats. They are designed to keep in place and supported when you are driving spiritedly and cornering. I noticed similar paint issues with my car, but I think that all happens during shipping. If the Japanese car's you bought were made in North America, they wouldn't have to worry about getting loaded for a sea voyage. You are supposed to measure you oil level once the engine and oil have reached operational temperature, on all cars. The oil will flow differently at operating temperature than when it is cold. The body panels are all aluminum, this makes the cars lighter. This is a sports car so lightness is important and and a defining trait of the Cayman. Aluminum has different properties than steel. Hence the need to close the trunk carefully. The condensation in the lights is normal. It was a surprised for me too at first, but this is how they were designed. The condensation will go away. I'm Texas and the sun and heat takes car of any fog in the headlights pretty quickly.

Momentarily hold your hand over the front/rear sensor area to activate frunk/trunk opening. It takes 1-2 seconds. If waving were to work, every time you wipe the car down, or brush by it, the frunk or trunk would open, which would be a huge annoyance. The front sensor is behind the bumper, directly below the Porsche logo on the frunk. The rear sensor is also centered within the upper portion of your rear bumper. In your case, somewhere around the "m" in "Cayman". I've had a base 987, 718 GT4, base 718, and now a '24 718 S. I have never had an issue with damaging either the frunk or trunk lids by closing them as any normal person would do. I would highly suggest that when closing the frunk, you use a flat palm directly over the Porsche logo. Any other areas pose a risk of denting the frunk. As I'm sure you've noticed, you really have to slam the rear lid to get it to close the first time. Closing the rear is much, much easier if you have a door open, or a window cracked. Like you, all of my P-cars have had condensation in the tail lights. My dealer wouldn't warranty it unless it is basically "pouring down the inside of the light(s)". I can't remember where I read it, but I recall something along the lines of: ...it should dissipate after driving for so many minutes, or so many miles. If it doesn't within that time frame, Porsche will warranty replacement. The design does in fact allow two-way venting, which is necessary. If the venting weren't there, the light housing would crack as the lighting elements heat up/cool down. Some owners have removed the offending lights and drilled a singular, tiny hole in the backside of the light to allow moisture to escape, thus resolving the issue. It's beyond me why every other manufacturer has solved this issue, but Porsche can't seem to manage. To add to your list, if using the air-recirculate with AC on, and then decide to turn the AC off, but continue recirculating the air, the air will only recirculate for something like 2-3 minutes before automatically switching to external air.

It’s a bit whingy, no “porsche-o-file” expects 100% perfection, it’s a bit naive to assume so. Maybe it is whingy or naive, but this IS my first Porsche and I don't think I have overly high expectations... on the other hand this is by far the most expensive car I've ever purchased and I think I'm not yet rich enough where I can spend $100K+ on a car, find flaws in it, and just shrug. I see plenty of others commenting in here who are basically doing just that, though. Maybe many other Porsche owners are so jaded or are so wealthy that it doesn't even matter anymore. I'm new to this world and I call it like I see it. And judging by many of the other comments in response to this video, these are not uncommon issues. But trust me I'm relaxing and enjoying life, don't think that this video is a complete summary of how I feel about this car or the experience. Treat this video as entertainment if you want to, I feel like a lot of viewers commenting on this are taking it a little too seriously and maybe they need to relax too. Watch my other videos if you want to see the bigger picture.

Nice video. I have owned a Cayman S purchased new in 2017. I detected no paint flaws Sapphire Blue. Checking the oil is a pain and the gauge is not reliable. Probably not unlike many other German cars. Never used cup holders. I found if I hold my hand at about 6:30 from emblem for a few seconds opens the lids. Perhaps the waving motion is not helping. Hold your hand still and reemeber the spot. Climate controls are not an issue for me. I don't change them that often. I have PDK. I have slammed the hatch. The frunk lid just drops shut without slamming. Sometimes I push it shut on the emblem, I was advised to not use a knuckle on the hood to snap it shut other than the emblem; risking some dent. Never have observed condensation in the lights. I have the same lights you have. This in Michigan climate garage stored, and stored in climate controlled garage for winter months.

Sure, these issues pale in comparison to how great the car is otherwise. But they are issues nonetheless. I did get the premium package too. One of the other comments mentioned that the HVAC memory issue has to do with the fact that I got the 18-way seats with memory function -- those who stick with the manual seats (2-way or bucket) the HVAC works as it normally should. Why would I slam the trunk or hatch? Well when I open them to get something out, that usually means I have something in my hands now and it would be nice to be able to close the lid with one hand. But the method recommended by the sales guy was to close it slowly, then use both hands to press gently down to latch (two hands to distribute the pressure across 2 points instead of one). That is rather inconvenient if you're carrying stuff that you just took out of the frunk or hatchback.

10. The Eli seats are probably one of the most comfortable seats I’ve ever had in the car if you’re having any issues fitting into it then I highly suggest in the most respectful way you make some lifestyle changes that will benefit your health and driving experience. 9. Once the car leaves the factory there really isn’t anything Porsche can do to ensure that the paint will come perfect during transportation when my car was delivered to the dealership, it was fully wrapped with plastic coverings that would attempt to prevent any road scratches and rock chips, but if you are concerned about protection, I highly recommend going to an experienced detailer to do some paint correction and installer PPF. 8. As for checking the oil levels, I agree with you. It would be nice to have a physical dipstick to whip out and analyze, but unfortunately, even Porsche is moving into the digital era and like most cars, the engine has to be somewhat warm to have an accurate reading, whether dipstick or digital, I’d recommend driving your car around the block or checking out the oil levels once you’ve arrived to a destination. 7. I didn’t notice that the automatic feature on the windows didn’t work when you’re about to turn off the car, but this really isn’t an issue for me personal because I’m turning off the car. I’m probably about to hop out anyways. 6. These over engineered cupholders are always a conversation starter for anyone that I drive around. See them as the most coolest novelty thing ever or as untrustworthy pieces of plastic that can barely hold a specific sized cup. I personally replaced. I personally replaced the center console cubby with a Kaisen 3-D printed cupholder, but I ran into an issue where if the bottle is taller than a standard Coke can it will impede using the manual transmission. Nowadays, I have to pack my coffee into a sealed yeti, and put it in my lunchbox on the passenger seat just to keep my drink secured then I will drink my beverage once I arrive to my destination. 5. As for the easy entry, you’re swiping way too fast and way too low. Try to raising your fingers halfway down the front bumper and about 3 inches lower than the rear mode logos. Your car has to be locked prior for it to work. I found using the knuckles on my finger worked better compared to the padding of the fingers. 4. As for the climate control settings it is something that I figured out on day one because you have the 18 way memory seats. When it says memory, it means every resetting on the car, including the settings, external settings and HVAC settings. Set up the car exactly the way you like and then make sure to set the memory on 1, 2, and the key option because that third key option is the default that the car will set to when entering the vehicle. 3. Having a lockout ring to get into reverse might actually be a better idea for this car, but it is what it is. I just imagine I’m about to slap myself on the thigh and that’s usually enough to shift it into reverse. 2. I honestly wouldn’t slam any trunk regardless of the brand car. I found out if you leave either the driver or passenger door open when closing the trunk it closes much easier. If the doors are closed, pressing down on both end corners of the trunk will close it much easier than pressing down the middle. As I usually make a fist and I apply pressure directly on the logo will ensure that you have even pressure on the hood of the car. 1. I’ve had this concern as well on my last three Porsches, but like Porsche says they have a vent there to battle condensation. Looking at it, objectively condensation is going to happen regardless of which brand of car and sewing of the headlights so I would much rather have a hole for condensation to leave compared to not where condensation will stay. Also keep in mind. These are tail lights so 99.9% of time there won’t be things flying into unless you’re taking it off roading or you exclusively drive it in reverse. All of these “issues” have been self solved through just using the car as a daily! I also have the ‘24 CGTS in shark blue that just came in on allocation on 7/4/24. Been loving it since!

Great video PMok. You may have gotten one of the few Porsche shoddy vehicles. In your initial posts, you said you had issues from the very beginning of your purchase. As for the assumption that automobiles north of 100K having fewer issues, that's far from the truth. Case in point: my Mercedes AMG GT arrived with a fuel pump issue that the dealership couldn't figure out. I enjoyed the car for all of 783 miles before the dealership agreed to allow me to switch it out. By the way, I hold (not wave) my hand just below the Porsche emblem to open the boot, and mine functions without issue. The temp settings are configured in the steering wheel controls (similar to the setting of the individual modes).

As an owner of various Japanese cars and sports cars I tend to agree with you. You get spoiled by the build quality and reliability of Japanese cars, and my past experiences with European and domestic cars has been in contrast, disappointing. But the allure and performance of a Porsche is why I wanted to give the Cayman a chance. I'm enjoying it a lot, but it's not perfect, and everyone who's aggressively defending these cars and the brand is ... well, they're lying to themselves. It has its good and bad characteristics just like any other car or brand. I like to look at each ownership experience more objectively, I'm not trying to drink the Kool-Aid.

My 987 interior quality is embarrassing. A couple notes for you and everyone else: When closing the frunk I would avoid pressing on the emblem. As others have noted, the hood is aluminum and will bend if there is too much pressure. You did it perfect, fingers spread out basically over the latch. On 987s I've been told that letting the rear hatch fall closed with the windows closed can pop the rear window out. The oil gauge is universally hated. If you do your own oil changes I suggest putting up to a quart of oil less than the capacity. Check the oil level and adjust. I always run about a half quart low (one notch on my car) because if you overfill it there's a chance at high rpm you will pull oil into the air intake. Expensive and difficult to clean up (from personal experience). And there's no excuse for the cup holder. Just plain stupid. If you'd like to expand your club and Porsche experience I suggest you check out the Porsche Club of America. Lots of great people, knowledge, and a variety of events. And given you've made, IMHO, an excellent choice of car/engine/transmission, if you haven't already I would highly suggest trying out at least one day of High Performance Drivers Education (DE or track day for short). You get to learn and experience what your car was built for with skilled instructors in a safe and fun environment. I can guarantee you will never look at your car in the same way!! Feel free if you, or anyone else, is interested in DE to reach out to me for more information. If you enjoy your car on the twistys imagine taking it around Laguna Seca or Sonoma at speed. You don't necessarily need a Porsche, and you can be a guest of a member too.

The all controls reset to defaults drives me crazy the most - seat position, auto start/stop, steering wheel settings, drive mode, heat/AC (have the memory and 18 way seats too). The keyless entry hand waving is hit or miss. I try to get as close to the car as possible when waving my hands and wave them over the opening as well. I do gently close the front and back trunks like they were made of glass. Hear they are aluminum and could get damaged. I have the trunks open during car wash issue others have mentioned. Constantly closing them as I hand wash and dry the car. Back light condensation happens the most, as with the mid-engine, the back of the car is warm a long time and I think that contributes to this.

The trunk lid and trunk lid are aluminum to save weight. You can bend aluminum if you slam it or press too hard on it. You are supposed to press on the Porsche badge to gently shut the frunk so you don’t bend your lightweight (good )frunk lid by presssing directly on the metal. This guy knows nothing about cars and certainly nothing about Porsches. Trade the cayman it on some soulless piece of plastic that you will also not appreciate nor care to learn about . It will be some banal point a to point b transportation that may work better for your lazy enthusiasm for cars lifestyle, but by god you will be able to slam that trunk without fear that the metal Is going to bend when it crushes your boxes of twinkies. A couple of things... my Subaru BRZ also has an aluminum front hood, but there is no issue with slamming it shut or pressing too hard on it. I've owned one for over 10 years and it's never been an issue, I suppose Porsche just doesn't design a part to be as sturdy as Subaru does? Or any other manufacturer for that matter. And for what it's worth, my Porsche salesman (who owns several Porsches himself) specifically told me not to press down on the Porsche badge to close it, that actually can bend the frunk lid because you're putting more pressure on one point. He said to use two hands to distribute the pressure. Is he right or is he full of it? I don't know. You're right, this is my first Porsche and so I don't know much about them. I am learning though. But I guess you must know a lot about them, enough to be some kind of gatekeeper about who should or shouldn't own one? I hope I don't meet someone like you at the Porsche club meets, you might actually convince me I don't want to own a Porsche anymore. BTW it sounds like you're the one with the zingers, keep up the good work.

My hood is aluminum. I can slam it. My rear hatch is composite. I can slam it. I do both. Porsche just makes a delicate ass car.

Porsche screwed you with your tail and head lights. That's pretty bs. Buy an M BMW instead. Traded my porsche for a M BMW. Much better car overall.
