Top 10 WORST Uniques in Diablo 2

It was fun to discuss the best Diablo 2 Uniques, but everyone knows it's more enjoyable to criticize game design instead. So, with that being said, here's the top 10 garbage bin uniques you should avoid in Diablo 2 Resurrected! (This list isn't the most serious, don't worry some of these aren't trash) ((They are though))

Yep I love it. If I accidentally teleport into a pack of mobs it often pops me out even before I can react. Haven't had it get me killed yet, though I agree I'd probably not use it on a HC character 😂

@@caffiend81 I use it and I think its like 75% of the time it saves me and 25% of the time it kills me but 90% of those deaths are at Nilathak including venom vipers. So I can "live" with that.

Mana per kill is way better. You’re not doing a lot of physical damage on a javazon so you’re not benefiting a lot from mana leech

Agreed. I get why some people don't love it, but that tele isn't a bit deal to me at all. After I play a character with an occy for a few hours I get used to a random tele once in a while. You learn to get hit a little less haha. You can't argue with those stats tho

@@RS-er7hd no tal Tasha weapon was bad, the armor amulet and belt were really good with oculus for magic find, because 3 set bonus ads a lot of mf and the helm and weapon were the worst items, also occy and shako added lots of mf and good stats. You were probably thinking of changing the tal wep for occy

I would disagree on Oculus. Sure, you wouldn't want it for a HC character, but it's the de facto MF weapon for sorceresses. This isn't even questionable usefulness for most characters. It's better than any rare for high-level characters. A light sorc mfer will probably want this over Eschutas because of the 50% magicfind. That's 80% with an ist! You could do better with Gull, or Ali Baba, but they won't have the raw horsepower kill stats. Manald is amazing for leveling melee (and javazons), as it's really hard to get good mana leech when you desperately always need it. Seems Tyrael's shouldn't really be on this list for the reasons you've mentioned. It's not bad. In fact, the "cannot be frozen" part while also having high defense makes it at least useful for mercs. I agree that it's underwhelming for the rarity, but my understanding isn't that this video is about disappointing items. It also has the potential to have a socket, which is more than you can say for runewords. An IAS/Res jewel can go a short distance to improving its viability to long-term. In any case, there are far worse that haven't been mentioned.

Yup, all great points. I have revisited my opinions about this list, and I placed some on here because they are a little more interesting to debate. I think there's so many 'boring' but decent uniques in d2 that would be pointless to discuss. I really don't prefer the occulus, but it isn't a bad unique really. My perspective was that if something is able to be outdone (so using an endgame perspective) and it has any issues, it's not a good unique. But that's discounting the benefit it gives you if you don't have the BIS item. Tyrael's is another item I find 'decent' but it's just so decent that I thought, why not I'll give it a spot on the list. But yeah, I actually do use tyrael's on a couple of things, so maybe I should've excluded it. I think if I were to redo this video, I'd have a lot more just meh pieces instead.

@@seer6251 your assertion of 'die 25% of the time you get hit' makes your view on this weapon skewered. Yes sometimes you teleport into a pack and you die being the frail high MF character you are, however with there being lots and lots more surface areas where those dangerous mobs aren't packed together, the chance is slim. On top of that, if you do land in a dangerous pack of monsters, the teleport proc actually saves you. Quite often you get locked in animations and can't get out in time. The random teleport overrides this. Also it spices up doing mf runs, which can get a bit boring, so there's that too. When your collection of charms improve, your resists get maxed out you'll find that a sorc wielding this weapon generally does about as fine as with a HOTO.

I just made pretty much this argument and then saw yours... I second what you said. Mind you the MF option I excluded because for bossing you would just weapon swap and for farming other places you might opt for the bonus damage of deaths fathom over the MF gain. That said, it was commonly used as an MF item regardless of min/max and it was often recommended even in guides historically. I have a stash tab called "Op Uniques" for things like my Viper Magi, Arach, ect.." I tossed the Oculus in there

Crushflange is great for fighting bosses with melee characters though, 33% crushing blow is goat at level 9 and I've sheen speedrunners use it to kill hell bosses with Smite (since it never misses). So yeah niche uses but definitely great for that.

I used it during my paladin playthrough for the act bosses before respecing to Hammers. Later I used it to kill the DC with this pally as a 1pt Smiter. 🙄

Funny, Jade Tan Do is an amazing defensive weapon for low level casters as well as low level dragon talon assassins (as the kick damage only comes from the boots). Manald is also great for low level kicksins since they're pretty mana thirsty at the beginning of the game. Crushflange provides a great low level source of crushing blow for boss kills with dragon talon kicksins, since knockback doesn't affect act bosses. The 50% fire resist is great against Diablo.

Manald is great for almost every physical char, i keep that thing equiped till around lvl 50 or something, sometimes i never unequip it cause i just need the mana leech and can't be bothered with finding something else. A perfect manald is just nice.

I remember I thought Goldstrike Arch was the coolest thing in the world. Throw that thing on a zon with multishot and watch the Fist of the Heavens proc everywhere. It LOOKED cool, but the bow was, in fact, a steaming turd the second you left Nightmare. Also, love the content dude, subscribed for sure!

Gotta say, not agreeing with some inclusions in this video - crushflange for one is the barbarian speedrunners' wet dream and is not half bad for starting out the game with a melee class despite the knockback. I gotta say - the steel shade commentary is exactly on point tho.

Have to say I actually run occulus on my mf sorc with double ist in it. Probably overkill but I very rarely get hit and half the time I'm teleport casting anyway. Also never have I once been killed because of it

Oculus always has the potential to end your life, detrimental on hardcore obviously. Another contender for items that will end up killing you is King Leorics tomb wand and that stupid bone cage proc on taking a hit.

I love Oculus. Played with it on my FO-sorc. Since i'm not playing sorc on hardcore, had no troubles with teleport. It was 99% saving and only 1% graving for me.

If we're talking specifically HC, The oculus makes sense in this list... though I've never died personally from its proc, I do believe in the possibility. outside HC, its an amazing piece to use until you can get your hands on a good Death's fathom.

I routinely continue to use the occulus over any of the sorc "BIS" damage items, simply because the huge magic find is worth the loss in damage. It usually is strong enough to still get the job done, and, as long as it can do that, you want the extra MF.

Oculus can save joy or kill you, it’s debatable. Definitely not good if you playing hardcore.

I think the most dangerous place for occy is p8 Pits and p8 WSK. I've ended up tele right into a clusterfuck of nasty Archers with auras and shit, and in WSK it's really fucking fun when you end up tele onto Strygian Dolls which the merc just one-shots. Other than that, I for p1 Pits and even p7/8 AT, and to a degree Meph, Pindle and Trav Occy is pretty boss. But high fhr is always recommended.

I'm sure it *may* have happened, but in all my time playing HC with the Amazon Basin, I never heard of anyone losing their character because of an Oculus incident. It was something to be aware of, but not afraid of. In 1.09, unless you had a full Tal's set, or some really, really amazing rare, Occy was the orb HC sorcs used, unless they were, you know, lightning.

my sorc used wizard spike stormshield tals ammy/armor/belt. Using tals full set was and is still bad. The armor, ammy, and belt are the only useful pieces. Not saying occy is bad, but it was a liability. One that I'd prefer not to have to worry about.

Hmmmm as a caster could you put Steelgoad Voulge on an Act II merc if you're playing a caster and kinda want things to stay away while you smack them with beege dps or would it be better to put actual damage items on them? Knockback is meant for mercenaries when you are ranged/caster yourself 💞 or for your own ranged weapon. Maybe if you are out of mana you can knock them away with your staff as a sorceress? 😊

manald is used very common in classic such as ww barb (which isnt trash in classic) or bowazon for mana leech which is probably why that item existed in the first place (before lod came out)

Crushflanges are great to get and save up for a necromancer. Use it to make an iron golem for hard bosses as a summoner, means you dont have to give the merc a crushing blow spear and lose Insight regen (or you could and get two allies with CB to kill bosses faster). Any summonmancer who is stuck on an act boss in their first hell playthrough should save up 3+ crushflanges or other CB items for each fight and use them for your iron golem. Your other summons, as we know, are mostly distractions to hopefully keep attention away from the IG and only tickle bosses even with 20 skeleton points invested + amp curse. Your crushing blow iron golem will be doing 80% of the damage.

I used Jade Tan Do as a main hand on my smiter to do Lilith on a budget, since your hitting with your shield it doesnt matter. It provides insane poison resist and cannot be frozen. Occulus is just insanely good. Concerning Crushflange, you can't KB bosses and it is one of the earliest crushingblow you can get. You can actually keep quite late in the game with a zealot as a swap for bosses.

You definitely got the right #1, but the rest of the items have all had some good low-level use. Even Crushflange makes an excellent golem when you find one. Lots of the the newer Elite uniques fall in that middling underpowered range, but the crappiest of all are ones that could be good but end up useless due to the base item. Looking at Medusa's aegis: with slow target and CtC lower res when struck it'd be a nice heater for a scappy elemental-physical hybrid build (fireclaws druid, light zon) but put it in a bigass aegis with 225 Str requirement and it's a turd.

I like finding Manald Heal simply just for the mana leech if I don't have any on a new char. Its useful.

Knockback is useful against some bosses like Smith, Hephasto and council members. Just pulverize them to the "wall" and you are safe.

Gotta admit I disagree with manald heal. Sure its not Stone of Jordan or Bul'Kathos' wedding band but between that and Cathan's Seal is how I always got a reliable source of leeching on low level toons.

Would be nice to see some context, i.e. when were the shit uniques added and were other much better options added later? Like Tyrael's isn't so bad but the Slain Monsters Rest in Peace makes it kind of new-ish so actually it's not like enigma just came and stole its glory. It just always sucked, I suppose?

Actually that's a great point. Truth be told my knowledge about earlier versions is far weaker than 1.13-1.14. If I remember correctly, Tyrael's was a lod unique, unless I'm wrong, so i'm not sure how it even stacked up in the initial expansion. It's an okay item overall, on the weaker side surely. I would like to see how it did fare when enigma/other good chests weren't as plentiful.

@@seer6251 the problem is that historically, Tyrael's Might made its way into d2x before such runewords as Chains of Honor and, later, Fortitude and Enigma. Plus, the realisation that defense was not that big of a deal anyway made this armor a display item more than a really useful one. The current battlenet economy does not help either. A Jah rune sells for way more than Tyrael's, as an example. Not to mention ebugged armors for mercs.

Oh yeah absolutely. I played through D1 recently, and really liked how you could be outpaced by a lot of enemies. Made things more dynamic and investing. in D2, I never understood melee knockback, since you were constantly having to chase after things.

I disagree with the oculus. 25% chance to teleport to a random location doesn't mean it will necessarily be a monster pack lol. Could be a safe place, it's random. It is annoying sure altho sometimes it's saved me too if I wasn't fast enough to Tele out of a mob that was annihilating me and I conciously went into. Definitely it's not safe for HC sorcs and if ur above lvl 90 gaining back ur 10% xp wud be a pain.

Spine-ripper seems made for a necro that uses daggers? best use I have for it is with a pally that uses electric shock.. since it has "ignore defence" u can zeal the hell outta stuff for like 10k electric dmg a hit... or 10 dmg... electric dmg is fun that way.

I remember finding JTD as my first unique and since I was playing necro I felt like a king, but even my child mind knew to quickly throw it out in the trash. However, Path of Diablo's Jade Tan Do is actually pretty amazing adding +skills to Poison Dagger which makes it live out it's fantasy as an 2nd weapon swap to pump extra damage for summon necro. ...look I actually have Snake Cord, Venom Ward and Jade Tan Do. Sure it's bad but I look and feel cool so stop bullying me.

The Jade Tan Do is actually not that bad if you are going for a poison dagger necro. Fringe build, but still. Such a build does not care about physical damage at all, only poison.

@@seer6251 I may try to go for it on the current ladder... But the problem is the ideal armor for it, which is Bramble (RalOhmSurEth). As you can imagine, it's pretty expensive :p Also, do note the Thorns aura on Bramble: it works reeeeeally well with Amplify Damage, especially in Hell... You have your solution right there for non PI melee provided you have meat shield with you (revives) :p And Spirit of Barbs _does_ stack with Thorns as well.

I don't use Occy even on softcore because I rely on precision dropping my mercenary with teleport and I did not farm him eth thresher with Andys only so that he would be taken away from where he is needed.

the most useful in late game low level items are Gull and lenymo, both are way way start game and has uses in pvp or mf . Can also list gibbin and others but they are like +9 or +15

If socketed with a nice rune or jewel, the Oculus is better than HotO for a Sorc. Even without a socket it can still compete with it. The only thing setting it back is as you said (and every one justly says) the random annoying teleports.

to be fair, comparing tyrael's to lionheart isn't really a fair comparison. Tyrael's is good for certain niche builds (namely amazons), and the lack of required stats is super nice (level 84 is kind of trivial to achieve honestly). The biggest problem is lionheart is a 1.10 RW, patch 1.10 and 1.11 were notorious for being huge sources of power creep. Tyrael's might existed at the inception of LOD when items were significantly less strong (with some exceptions in the form of 1.08 uniques). Tyrael's isn't necessarily a terrible item, it's just rare, niche, and very outdated.

Actually that's totally right. On a dual dream enchantress, it's a really great item. You'd need to have a socket quest + either an ias jewel, or whatever you need for breakpoints/resistance. It's a pretty dynamic build with a lot of choices. Huge grats on the Tyraels!

Steel Shade is awesome, you find one with higher absorb, socket it, put some decent fire res jewel with ED and shove it onto your merc, and viola, he doesn’t get wrecked in trav, way better then kiras+ga

and just because of the teleport proc the oculus is on this list? if you've got even a bit of hp/fhr/res you won't die in like 95 % of the cases. the advantages (early accessability like nightmare meph as well as the amazing other stats) way, way outweigh that one detriment. yeah, if you're part of the small minority playing hc then it's not for you. otherwise it's great to early on to farm better gear. not like you can take on players 8 act bosses for mfing early in the ladder anyway. same thing with crushflange. it's an act 1 item and great for smiters that have kb anyway. yeah, it's way more of a niche item than the oculus, but still got its place since cb is so universally useful.

Manald Heal is the best early source of mana steal for melee and archer characters and is sometimes the only source they can find. Sure, it's useless for casters, but not for everyone.

The Oculus is just the game's vibe check to see if you are a chill chad who does what needs to be done no matter the situation. Just don't get hit, easy. For real though, get pumped if you find this. As a born again virgin softcore player -- can only possibly maybe remember one time where I died because of it's teleport. All the other times it's saved me when finding the Durance 3 entrance on a MF run or getting rushed by extra fast / aura enchanted Death Lords in Act 5 tunnels. But if we're talking Flayer Jungle or Arcane Sanctuary with tons of tower spawns and fast Ghoul lords, then yeah swap right into your dual spirit.

you know if you just have ok gear with defenses, that teleport barely procs hey. I literally use a isted occy over a 30% fathom.

knockback is only not a pain in the ass if your a zon that uses a bow or for ur act1 merc if ur using faith act1 merc. but even then it doesnt really help that much

It's unfortunate that I made this list before actually trying manald heal on a lot of different things. If any of these I actually regret, it's that one. After MFing for so long, I think I became desensitized to the item, and just assumed it wasn't good. Still don't think it's all that interesting, but I did miss the mark there.

Dude you make a video about top 10 WORST uniques in D2 and missed most of the truly crappy ones. Crushflange is a boss killer weapon. For lvl 9 it has huge stats. What damage you really expect, 200+? It has 50% fire res, +15 str and 33% cb. These are elite tier mods on a lvl 9 item. Oculus i kinda agree for hardcore chars, but the item has very high stats for a sorceress and more like an incovenience for softcore chars rather than a very bad item. Manald is mostly the best ring a lvl 15 char can have, exept 10 fcr /stat rings, but those are not common in act1. Tyrael is just average, but not the worst. Sure i understand why did you put on the list but... eh... But what about... Stormspire, Bloodmoon, Flamebellow, Wraith's Fligh, Gargoyle's Bite, Ghostflame, Cranebeak, etc... None of them are mentioned. Normal uniques are mostly balanced compared to elites.

You make great points with this. There was a part of me that was interested in being out there with some choices. I regret it in hindsight, because I could've spent longer just scouring though the unique pages before putting the list together. In a lot of ways, bad uniques in this game are boring, not so much terrible. One's with little use, but little reason to pick on. So for better or worse, I tried to fashion a list with things that probably won't appear on other lists. Probably wouldn't do that again if I did this list over, lol.

Yeah true, that's a good point! I think I've never had the luxury of having a crushflange when it's relevant, but if you did get it before andy or duriel, it'd be very strong.

steelshade is what some weird ppl use sumtimes on their act 3 merc if they decide to for some reason use an act3 merc. because they have no lifesteal or healing ability. still really goof that they couldnt give it at least 1 other mod besides replenish life

I don't really understand why people like D2 while keep mentioning how broken the whole thing is. I would agree it as one of the greatest games, at least the first three, not just greatest arpg, but only at its time, and really not super great considering so many factors. Skill/stat reset, none until 20 years later because found that time is so valuable and so grinding is so rat racing, uniques with literally random affixes, I don't mean uniques' affixes are random, I mean uniques' affixes are randomly designed, rune words are so brokenly strong, yet high runes are so rare, so you either have to play like you have nothing else to do, or play for a whole year and finally get to make one single endgame rune word, or use bots... Charms are not in separate inventory, but in regular inventory, and so everyone just leave one single 2x4 shit slot left to pick up anything, and it's in the cube... Skills are so unbalanced, like the low level skills are literally completely useless endgame so they added synergy to make it up, not to mention some skills are completely useless. Classes are so unbalanced, druid, especially fury druid, like shit, just an upgraded version of jab amazon, maybe better now since I haven't played for years, but I don't think any changes. No matter how many builds in games, how many memorable moments in game, those don't change the fact that D2 is like the greatest game of all at its time, but literally just not great. It's great not because it's a great game, but because it's the best game of its time, of ITS time.

​@Goliwog Jones 1.10 is not so much the problem in my opinion, but instead the whole game is quite unbalanced. It's just really unbalanced, especially the introduction of rune words, they are just as random as all other things in the game, random stats designs, random rune combinations designs for rune words. At the end of the day, it was designed over 20 years ago, which is in my opinion, legendary, but over time, the whole industry has improved in every way, although some games are more broken than D2, but saying D2 is the best of all time now is really pointless.

I disagree. I find that the game feel and replay value of diablo 2 is a lot better than many of the more modern diablo clones. It could certainly be improved on, with lessons other games have learned since it's release, but I personally find diablo 2 to be more fun than Grim dawn, titan's quest, PoE, diablo 3, or any of the other diablo clones I've played since. It's not a perfect game by any means. Hell, there are some things that I think even diablo 1 did better than diablo 2, but overall it is still the best complete package in the genre, imo.
