Alexander the Great, King of Macedon from 336 to 323 B.C., was unarguably one of the most influential figures in history.
His empire spread from Gibraltar to Punjab, and he made Greek the lingua franca of his world, the language that helped spread early Christianity.
After his father, Philip II, unified most of the reluctant city-states of Greece, Alexander continued his conquests by taking Thrace and Thebes (in the area of Greece), Syria, Phoenicia, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Egypt, and on to Punjab, in northern India, present-day Pakistan.
We have gathered the top 13 interesting facts about this amazing figure you probably never knew. #HistoryVille

Alexander being blonde is not historically accurate... None of his contemporary biographies mentions such a thing, nor his earliest depiction which is considered by experts to be the one in Pompeii. Aelian was a Roman rhetoric teacher of the second to third century A.D. and he created the earliest "blonde Alexander '' myth, beginning around 200 AD, almost 500 YEARS AFTER ALEXANDER'S DEATH. Before Aelian many Greek and Roman historians wrote about Alexander and NOT EVEN ONE ever mentioned that he was blonde. Pseudo-Kalisthenes, Arrian etc. NONE. The story about the mythical ancient race of blonde Hellenes was created during the 20th Century by Nazi propagandists. It is a complete fabrication, as CONCLUSIVELY PROVEN by several genetic studies which have continually shown that Greeks since 1500 B.C, up to this day had mainly brown/dark hair and olive skin. They were never pale whites with blonde hair! Goebbels seized upon the opportunity to expand the concept of the "blonde Alexander" to the "blonde Greeks." Nothing earlier than that suggests anything other than a typical black or brown-haired, browned-eyed Greek. Tendency to depict them as blonde haired comes from something called as the "Nordic Complex", which is an attempt to unify European identity through one phenotype. But what they fail to understand is that Ancient Greeks would be insulted by that. They never wanted to be put in the same category with trans-Alpine "primitive" tribes. As far as the ideal is concerned, ONE CAN READ PLATO's work and notice that they were very proud of their Mediterranean look. For them, northern people were too pale. They also thought that people from the far south were too dark. So their ideal was honey-olive colored skin (as stated in Plato's Republic) and dark curly hair as the looks of a typical Mediterranean. After all one only needs to use his/her eyes to see the dominant phenotype in Greek art and the dominant phenotype is without any doubt a Mediterranean man with dark complexion. It's not so hard to realize that some "Harald", "Hakon" or "Halfdan" can never fit the overall Greek aesthetics and art.
