Agree with the earlier comment about this working really well for punch output/endurance which CAN increase speed. For pure speed I'd go with the Tabata 1-2 Drill (:20"on :10" rest x 8 sets), I've seen a good drill using :15" on and :15" off for 3:00" have good results too. I'll try and get video demo up soon. Still taking nothing away from this drills difficulty and effectiveness for punch output, which can increase speed but necessarily affect speed directly. Good drill!

I've done drills similar to this where on command you squat and on command you go into the prone push ups position, jump to Your feet and throw 1-2's to the pads. Good info and your fighter was working hard. That drills isn't easy. "Speed kills."

So me and my brother have been working out for like 40 ish days now. Halfway through we got a little bored of regular working out ....so after working out we threw in 5 sets of this( went and bought all the gear) ......and mannnn mannnn this shit kills you hahaha In a good way. It does drain you and get you tired but has def helped us increase our endurance and to be more efficient with our punching. I appreciate the videos man will be watching more so me and him can continue to learn and improve.

Great drill for endurance not for speed ... if you want to work on maximal speed you short burst drills with 1/5 ratio rest to reset and not work on endurance... just like you would do sprints not a marathon to run faster

great video,im not fat but when I punch I feel sluggish and lazy even when im fired up from being angry,my mind is there but not my body isnt even when I was in cross country I was sluggish during my runs in the beginning then after I was fully warmed up I got into it,I was in varsity in x and track as a sprinter,long jump and hurtles.I need to condition alot for my cardio vascular

great video for a cardio kickboxing class ,but it seems like it's more for endurance and not for building hand speed. the punches are too long and not snapped.
@greggregory1744
@greggregory1744 7 жыл бұрын
hmmm the way we did it is a bit different, we punch from a shorter range than this video, also loose the power and put more speed into it and rather than punching through it, snap the punches while on your toes, not flat footed. Thats just my 2 cents anyway.

I guess you'll just have to develop your stamina - endurance and when you do, you'll be developing speed .. 1 - 2 .. stamina - speed. Either way, its' great exercise

Watching this again, I am compelled to add another comment. At 0:30 the instructor explains that the drill is going to be for two (2) minutes. He explains that the number of sets of punches completed in that time will tell you something about the boxer's hand speed. Two points: 1) the final clock indicates 4.5 sets in 2:50 mm not 2:00 mm. 2) there is another variable in the test that affects outcome that is ignored ie. the time it takes for the boxer to run from point A to point B. I repeat, this is nothing more than a (good) endurance workout that will, like hand weights, bands, plyo-metrics, etc, recruit and develop the muscles used in punching that will ultimately assist in developing speed. But it is not a speed developing exercise in and of itself. Working to fatigue or failure is not the way to develop speed. It is ridiculous to say so.

I disagree you with you man, reps for any punch developing speed, it's one of the old school ways shared between all martial arts, you just keep punching the same punch so frequently in a short time it will definitely develop speed, I did it myself before and I have developed an incredible fast Jab cross, briefly its been done before! Note : Squats here just to improve indurance also at the same time

This is more for stamina/endurance and work rate as oppose to having an emphasis on speed. Overtime when you get fitter and stronger your be able to execute punch combinations with good form over longer periods. Speed in relation to BOXING is a combination of timing, reflexes and staying relaxed. Genetics helps as well!

Did similar exercises to this when I was training a couple years ago... it helps and the only way you'll truly find out is by putting yourself under similar circumstances. By relaxing our bodies we move quicker and by tiring out we learn to be more efficient at being relaxed. Don't believe it, don't try it.

Dj Ruthless Well what it does is builds your endurance, and helps you max out your muscles. When your muscles max out through high so we reps, it tesrs them, in turn giving them room to grow. After a while you gradually develop more speed.
@jahlal4

This is endurance, not speed training. Speed training specifically targets the fast twitch reflex and anaerobic system, both of which would be completely fatigued after 10-30seconds, depending on your condition. If you wanted to use this drill to develop speed, then you would punch for 20-30 second intervals, rest time 30-60seconds...

Thanks, this was an awesome tutorial. My girlfriend is currently kickboxing. I have been since I was 8 years old. We did there round a piece. She did awesome. It was challenging do the both of us. However we pushed through and triumphed. It was also a great bonding experience for the both of us as we've been having difficulty in our relationship. This and a boxing match we attended at the Gaylord MGM Casino in DC. Thanks bro keep up please, I will be falling you. I will post some training vids inspired by you as well. Check us out.

I highly doubt that this is doing anything to develop hand speed. It is taxing the aerobic system. Ergo it is an endurance exercise. You do not have to get fatigued to learn how to relax your arms in order to punch faster. It is taxing the wrong energy systems in order to develop speed. The anaerobic systems, particularly the anaerobic alactic system is the primary system used in burst of punches in the boxing. Think about it! Sprinters don't sprint for four, continuous minutes to develop speed. There is too much misinformation like this on the internet.

I disagree this drill is developing speed, as speed goes down veeery fast, hence to actually work on developing speed, we need light weight, and short amount of explosive exercises with a good amount of rest. This drill is great for endurance, cuz as you go up, inevitably you get tighter and tighter in the shoulders/scapula's, hence you're not working on speed anymore. Number 1, for speed development we want to be lose, this drill makes sure you're not.
