Not gonna lie, I upgraded to a 7800x3d and it is kinda generally more unstable than the 13th gen intel I was on before. The intel CPUs tend to be more plug and play you don't really need to worry about downloading the chipset drivers and stuff, but its really really important for AMD CPUs. that and the 7800x3d seems to just be stuttier than the equivalent intel CPU even though the performance is higher, its weird. I heard people calling it the AMDIP. but its been noticable for me even after making sure everything is set up right, and sticking with 6000cl30 ram which is measured to be the best for the 1% lows. and turning off all the potiential issue causers like core memory isolation, and rebar and HAGs and stuff to test

5500 trades blows with the 3600 that have been around $50-60 for well over a year. Not to poo poo on your deal but it’s not a crazy good price considering the performance it can give. It has half the L3 cache (16mb)as the standard 5600 (32mb) and up cpus and it only supports gen3. If you are on B550 or X570 already I would recommend keeping an eye out for a used 5700x or better deals that will net you double the cache and gen4 which will help if running direct storage games and or a 8x modern gpu like a 6600/4060. I just bought a $115 5700x not because I needed it over the 5600x but because I could push out a standard 5600 for $100 easily. If you just wait for a crazy used deal on a 5600x/5700x/5800x you can then sell your 5500 for max pricing around $80 and have very little out of pocket. It’s all about price, find a crazy good deal right around $100 for a proper 32mb version and then sell your 5500 for much of the cost of the upgrade. I just went from AM4 to AM5 for like $30-40 out of pocket.

@@45eno 5600 is 20% faster at most compared to the 5500, and is twice the price. 80% performance for 50% of the price is not a bad purchase.
@45eno7 ай бұрын
@@flushfire 20% faster for a CPU is a big difference in CPU. Limiting yourself to PCIe 3.0 with only half the L3 cache 16mb compared to standard 5000 series is not a great move. For people with say a used $30 B450 board and some $20 RAM with a 16x GPU like a 6700 then sure it would work well. But if he is on a B550 or X570 then he just limited himself to Gen3 when his board could have handled 4.0. And with this budget range many people by 8x GPU's like a 6650XT, 7600X or 4060 and running 8x GPU's on Gen3 gives people a double hit to bandwidth unlike the typical 16x GPU's that handle the 3.0 spec better thanks to 16x bus. 5500 or 5600G should be only used on older dirt cheap builds like B350/B450/X470. Anyone on 500 series boards and buying a part that limits what their board can do is just silly.

I run a Ryzen 5700X. Not least because of the 8/16 core being better than the 5600X 6/12 core, but mostly because it remains a 65W part. 5800X consumes 105W, an extra 40W for a few percent of extra speed. Power consumption is the most important factor for me, since I'm running on solar/battery.

Actually I bought an extra 32GB as well (and yeah, "never buy unmatched ram"... but it was the same brand, lot, serial number, and they're all single-rank, so I was able to get them to play nice at their rated speed, your mileage may vary). Considering the 7950X was about $200 more, and the 7800X3D wasn't out yet (and initially was also $200 more), I'm quite happy with my pick. Also, the pc is "mixed use" and it's "4k"... so, budget multicore performance (for mixed use) and I have minimal cpu bottleneck concerns (cuz 4k puts the bottle on the gpu). All the experts were recommending a 5800X3D at the time (and it''s a great cpu), but one of the reasons I was building a new pc was because my previous build was stranded on the wrong side of a motherboard & ram platform change, so I wanted AM5 to forestall that eventuality on the new build. I'll probably swap it out eventually with a 8800 X3D or 9800X3D eventually (whenever AM5 is hitting it's end of life stage). AM5 engenders a LOT of new standards (pcie 4, many lanes, ddr5, and the cpu socket itself). Took a very different approach to gpu though. Wanted rock solid 4k performance with no if's/but's. So I went with a 4090. Considering it runs 4k "great" _without_ DLSS, _and_ I have DLSS to fall back on in the future... It seemed like a very long-term (albeit high cost) investment. I've undervolted it slightly, and made sure the plug is tighter than humanly possible, and the card's floating corner is well supported.

I went from an i5 11400 to the 5800X3D earlier this year, and the jump in performance was insane. Yes I went from LGA1200 to AM4, but my case is a little different; mine's a mini ITX build, and parts are somewhat expensive. I would've had to spend hundreds of dollars more just to shift to AM5 with a R5 7600. I am killing future upgrade-ability by sticking to AM4 but my scope is also not that big, in the sense that my case is so small it can't physically accommodate a relatively large GPU. Currently I have a Reference RX 6800 in there which I bought second hand for around $350, and I'm going to have to wait a bit to replace it with something that is significantly faster for the same size and cost. By then AM5 will be cheaper with faster CPUs too. The fastest GPU that fits my case right now is the Founders 4070Ti, *if* I can find one, that is. But that's way too much money (almost 2.5x) for something that's less than 40% faster - not really a generational leap, imo. I'd need something that's atleast 2x as fast, which I don't think is happening until 2026 at the earliest.

So is the 13600K worth paying 80$ more? Or do I save the 70$ by going for the 7700X and get the RX 6800 since it's 65$ more than the RX 6700 XT?

There will be a 8800X3D already next year. That will either push down the price of the 7800X3D or provide you with a better option.

Appreciate the video. Would be good if you could also consider whether your recommendation is the same in Australia where the pricing can be quite different. Eg 14700kf is cheaper than 7900X. I guess you would just say “go with whatever is cheaper in your region” which is fair 😂

The reasoning behind buying a 5800X3D in a nutshell. A Porsche (RTX 4090) totally smoked me at the traffic light. Should I buy racing tires (5800X3D) for my old Corolla? (RTX 3070) I mean, sometimes I have to drive pretty fast to get to work (Fortnite 144 FPS) or get the kids to school safely (Elden Ring 60 FPS). A few years ago, I also replaced the windshield. I can see around the corners now (1440p 144Hz monitor). The old tires (Ryzen 5 3600) mostly hold up but whatever, the racing tires would cost only two-thirds the residual value of the car (entire PC). So, I can definitely benefit from racing tires... Right? Look, I just wanna get back in the fast lane and ride the breeze again. Like driving a Porsche... But in my old Corolla. D' you know what I mean? STEVE: Yeah, you should definitely do it. I have a custom build Lamborghini (RTX 4090 + 540Hz monitor) and the racing tires were a big upgrade for me. And it was an easy change too. Took only a few minutes. I know, a new car (AM5) will last quite a few years longer than some heap (B450 motherboard) but don't buy the new one. Not worth the work and money. And if the Corolla still can't keep up, you can always replace the old brakes (16GB RAM), add a turbo (NVMe drive) and tune the engine SW (reinstall Windows) later. Or even replace the engine entirely (RTX 4090). Just for a little extra money and work. COROLLA OWNER: But wait, the old car cost me the same money as a new car, and I still had to rebuild it anyway. But I'm stuck with an old car now. And the irony, my car is still slower than the new one. STEVE: As I said, don't buy the new one. Not worth the work and money. But hey! You don't have to agree with me! 🤣 JACK: Joking. I'm just teasing you. Keep doing a great work. Love you guys. 👍😊

As someone that bought an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X when the price had dropped down to $156.00 US, I am insanely happy with it, after I was insanely happy with how far the Ryzen 5 1600X got me on the exact same motherboard and 16GB of RAM. Yes, technically I am holding my 5600X back on a B450M motherboard considering it is limited to PCI-E Gen. 3, but my RTX 2080 Super is PCI-E Gen. 3 so it is fine. I am hoping to keep with what I have for at least a few more years, had the 1600X and a GTX 1070 from 2019 when I bought those parts lightly used, and would likely be using them still if I had not gotten my hands on the RTX 2080 Super in exchange for some mechanic work I did, and sold my 1600X and GTX 1070 to a friend to buy my 5600X to go with the RTX 2080 Super. He got a truly massive upgrade to his gaming PC as he went from an AMD Phenom II 1075T with 8GB of RAM, and its only ever upgrade since 2010, an AMD RX 480 8GB, to the Ryzen 5 1600X and GTX 1070 on a brand new AsRock B450M motherboard with 32GB of RAM.

I just got the 7900x, waiting for my pc to arrive. Nearly got the 7950x3d or 7800x3d or 7950x - I figured this cpu was a good balance of price performance and power and I’m doing more than just playing games. Upgrading from 3700x, wonder if it’ll make much of a difference? (Upgrading from 2070super to 4070ti). I was concerned about issues with dealing with core scheduling etc with the x3d parts and the 7800x3d seemed pretty weak in apps. Was tempted for intel but wanted an upgrade path.

3D V-Cache parts borderline don't care about memory speed and latency. If you have ANY sign of stability problems, just dial it back to 6000 with as tight a CL as you can get. I can't get my 7950X3D to show more than 1.6% difference between 5600CL28 and 6000CL30 in AVG FPS but 0% in 1% Lows. And that's in a single game. The rest are sub 1% AVG in 5 run averages. With 96MB L3 cache and a healthy read-ahead strategy it appears you never really hit "the real" memory latency.

@@theplayerofus319 I got some gains out of that on my 5950X but the sheer brutality of the 3D V-Cache completely trumps anything I've tried. Sure, I can measure some changes in AIDA and other synthetic benchmarks but I can't see a god damn thing in neither gaming, code compilation or video editing, which are the only demanding things I do.
@nathanwhite617 Жыл бұрын
@@andersjjensen Thanks, I got it because it didn't cost much more than 6000. 48GB for like $160. I just thought maybe if future processors could do higher speeds and I bought a non 3D cache part maybe it would comein handy or I could push it to 6600, but I didn't want to have to go in and dial it back and do all of my own timings from like 6800 or something. This is as high as EXPO profiles go currently also. I have had no stability issues only playing one game so far. I need to test it.
@nathanwhite617 Жыл бұрын
@@andersjjensen Do you know if music apps like guitar amp modelers that need low latency can benefit from RAM speeds? I didn't know if the 3D cache was good for that or not but it is not my primary use. I can't find any info online about it. Most music pros seem to know little about computer hardware, other than Mac vs PC.
