Paramo without any reservations. I have a cupboard full of various types of Tex's ... Gortex ... Pertex "all the layers" etc. A small fortune over many years of hill climbing ... fell walking ... cycling ... boating. All will keep you dry, however the moisture dissipation of Paramo is in a class that far exceeds all the others. I've worn it after it started to rain big time very suddenly, and in that short nano sec I was soaked up in the Lake District. My Paramo jacket allowed me to dry my clothing but more importantly kept me warm whist dissipating the moisture till I was dry. No "Gortex style layers" would ever be that efficient. So in full rain, Paramo Jacket & Trousers you are fully waterproofed and very comfortable, Nice 👌.

Indeed, last Sunday I was hillwalking at 800m. 6°c with a 2°c wind chill. Wind around 30mph, gusting 40. I didn't even need to wear my midlayer, just a t-shirt and my Paramo adventure light smock. Fantastic kit. I rarely wear my Paramo trousers unless it's the dead of winter or torrential rain.

Norrona makes some of the best jackets out there. They rank right up there with arcteryx and they are actually the first company to come out with the Gortex pro plus jacket. I have the Falketind jacket and love it.

@Maxx Kroes oh I found one bad apple.... I will never ever eat apples again... :( Buy Nikwax TX-direct spray and the wash-in bottle or just send it back and ask for another one, I bought a Beta SV jacket a year ago and no water has entered my jacket, just use the Nikwax spray every 10-20 days to maintain the DWR finish :)

windproofing is just as important as is layering properly. I wish they would sell sets of merino wool shirts, wool sweater, puffy and waterproof/windproof coats that cover the bummies. We have to get those goats to reproduce a lot!! I hate buying anything synthentic; there must be something we can find as a lightweight, waterproof/windproof coat.

I bought the Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket, pretty sure it's as good as any on this list. Absolutely bomb rain (and water). If I was buying again I'd likely get Patagonia but purely because i respect the company's ethos so much.

For the price, I prefer the Outdoor Research Interstellar Jacket. It is just about as good as the Arcteryx at half the price. Sure, it is missing a few perks but on sale for $155 now, it is all you need and rated very highly by sites like Gear lab and Switchback Travel. I'm sure since it has been around for a couple of years and now on sale, a new breed is coming around the corner but it is a steal if you buy this year....It breathability, air permability, water and wind proofing are top notch

Columbia makes the best rain Gear! Trust me i am from Portland Oregon and it rains from Angles here! Patagonia is just hyped their rain coats are for californians only hahahah they start to peel off after a wash or 2.

From my experience, I 100% agree. Patagonia makes some decent mountaineering gear (although the manufacturing quality I've noticed isn't quite what it used to be in some items) I know my father field tested a lot of things from them when he guided on Mt Hood. But I've heard other complaints about the waterproofing and durability. Columbia has been by go to and I've lived for 30 years just North of you in Battle Ground, WA. You can't have a rain coat that is "fashion only" in this region, that's for sure. My ski coat from them lasted me about 11 years (even then I only got rid of it because I needed a size up, but I gave it to a family friend and they still wear it! ) . I'll buy Columbia any day of the week.

The Columbias seem to be easily damaged by backpack straps. I have not found them to be durable in that respect. Have you done some heavy backpacking with a Columbia rain jacket? What has been your experience?

How will you wash this jacket's if it's waterproof?

With gotex, you wash and dry as normal and the drying actually resets the waterproofing material

I use products designed for use in a washing machine. Wash the garment (s) with the cleaner. Then run a second wash cycle with the reproofer. Dead easy.

Most jackets act as hi visibility on rescue situations. If you keep that in mind and you are into more extreme adventures go for bright coloured ones.

All have poorly designed neck and hood. Zip-through collars are terrible and none of these have a face flap to stop the wind. I had a North Face jacket from the 80's that was much better designed than these. It is a shame these companies can't make a decently designed jacket.
