The other crazy thing about Up the Beanstalk is that it's not legendary, meaning you can stack them. Get two out and suddenly you're not just breaking even with Solitude or FoW, you're actually netting a card!! It's insane!

I wouldn't say you net a card. It's 2 for 2. But you net the effect for free which is usually worth a card.

Nah definitely fyndhorn elves Granted arbor elf is like, all of these but arguably better since it lets you untap a forest, which means you could use more than just green with dual lands

The original art for Birds of Paradise was meant for Tropical Island. Art direction back then wasn't quite what it is today, so when they got the art back and saw how prevalent the bird was, they just decided to whip up a card to still make use of the picture and made a new Tropical Island in-house. Jesper Myrfors was the art director back then, and this wasn't the only time he had to patch up their art assignments for whatever reason. I believe Circle of Protection: Black has a similar story behind it, but I can't quite remember it. The originally assigned art was way late or something, so they had to throw something together at the last minute.

There's a lot of really, really strong green cards. All of those are great choices. I would also consider Genesis/Hypergenesis and Protean Hulk. They also mentioned Fastbond in their article, which seems particularly more powerful than the ones this video is about.

The classic card to oath into was Cognivore and then Spike Feeder, Spike Weaver and Morphling. Battlefield Scrounger was part of a combo deck called Turboland and the card you wanted to draw was Time Warp. or in some convoluted way any single card in your deck. The deck was great and mindmelting.

I'm a Green mage and probably my all-time favourite card is Life from the Loam, which is sort of a one-card combo or at least a one-card engine. I don't think I can justify rating Loam higher than any of the bangers on this list other than maybe Llanowar Elves. I've watched enough Legacy to know that Up the Beanstalk is a seriously screwed up card and seeing it on this list is not as mad as you might think. And yeah I remember Goyf as this just super iconic powerhouse card that suddenly was starting to be outclassed by...a big dumb fish from Fate Reforged? That's right, Gurmag Angler was the first sign that Goyf was in trouble, and then Fatal Push really killed the Goyf and then they've printed nastier threats and now it's just a memory/meme card. It does my green heart good to see so many great honourable mentions in the comments such as Natural Order, Prime Time, Fastbond, Survival of the Fittest, etc. Video put a smile on my face. One big sandwich for Carl, Thoralf, and for Jamin. Thanks boys.

2:50 with the right opening hand, you can use dorks like these to play a six drop on turn three. Play forest, dork, untap, play forest, two dorks, untap, play forest, cast six drop. Of course this is still risky as an opponent can just counter it or kill it

A lot of the cards in the honorable mention are stronger than potition 3-5 in the list and even some that didn't make the honorable mentions: Fastbond, Golgari Grave Troll, Primeval Titan, Hermit Druid, Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order.

Channel lets you do another crazy thing. If you have Lich's Mirror in the deck, as long as you can keep drawing one, you can repeatedly play the Mirror, off yourself to the Channel to trigger the Mirror, and pile up all that mana in your mana pool since you never switch phases. Then from there you can basically make infinite mana from your life and then win with something like a Walking Ballista.

It's kind of a one-trick pony - only low cost things and sometimes misses. Not as good as similar OG versions like Oath of Druids or Pattern of Rebirth or Natural Order that just grab anything.

@@Sauvenil it is and it isn't. It has some perks over cards like Natural Order and Pattern of Rebirth that I feel easily puts it on par. It's powerful because despite its limitations it creates a massive advantage for any deck it's in.

@@Sauvenil I mean you do have to build towards Natural Order too, you can't just throw it in any deck and expect it to work. It's just you have to build differently than company. I consider company so good because unlike natural order, it gives a better chance at assembling two card combos (albeit specific ones). Plus it does it at instant speed which is also highly beneficial over sorcery speed.

I find it interesting that Up the Beanstalk makes the list, but there is no Prime Time or Natural Order. To be fair, Top 5 lists are always tough, especially when biases, subjectivity, and a card pool, the size of which Jamin didn't manage to count in the opening somehow ;) Big fan of making these into "story time" though, so I'm not going to complain :)

I'm not sure how good Rofellos is, but I thought it could have been an honorable mention. It's like a reverse Gaea's Cradle, instead of having a land that yields 1 mana for each creature, you just have a creature that yields 1 mana for each land (assuming they are forests).

7:10 Tribal is a card type so that it can have a subtype, and it shares those subtypes with creatures. If tribal was a subtype, then it would need to have a subsubtype and I think that would be more confusing. It would also itself still be a subtype not only shared between instants and sorceries, but also enchantments and artifacts, which is a problem because those don't normally share subtypes, so you'd have a sorcery/instant version of tribal, and an enchantment version of tribal and an artifact version of tribal, which then each would share subsubtypes with eachother as well as with creatures. Instead, it's simply a type that shares its subtypes with creatures. Just like instant and sorceries share subtypes. Although trap only seems to occur on instants and lesson only on sorceries.

Black should probably be 1. Necropotence 2) dark ritual 3) demonic tutor 4) orcish bowmasters 5) reanimate Honorable mentions to grief, animate dead, entomb, archon/griselbrand, thoughtseize, Sheoldred, etc… I’m probably missing a few but outside of contract from below which is the best magic card of all time, I think the top 3 are pretty indisputable. In general I think mana acceleration/rituals are getting better and better as wizards continues to powercreep on threats while simultaneously avoiding printing rituals/mana acceleration to the point that dark ritual, on its current trajectory will probably be the best black card in the game.

Great Video. However, while I understand while Elf got no. 5 I still like Bird more. Despite not being Elf.If you insist on mana ramp , then I say Priest of Titania is much better pick since thats insane ramping. But even then I would overtake it with Wild Nacatl 3/3 for G Is more powerful by itself (and plains and mountain which very easy). Ramp is great, elf is great, but its depending on other cards. What I like on Up the Beanstalk is actually that you draw even if the spell gets countered and you dred before the spells resolves as well. Its pretty good at times. Goyf is very understandable, but hes getting older. But still powerful. Channel could be No.1 , but Oath is acceptable its really strong card. Overall though green is stacked the list could feuture many different card and still not be an issue.

Oath of Druids is powerful, but it was banned in most formats. Survival of the Fittest got more tournament wins back in the day. That’s the green card I have the most fond memories playing. Type 2, extended, legacy. Would be interested if they unban it in legacy one day. My playset it still waiting.

7:14 Tribal had to be a type and not a subtype because tribal has subtypes, it shares all of creature's subtypes, so needs to be on the same level that's just the way types and subtypes interact. Tribal was created entirely because there needed to be a type to give access to the creature subtypes on non creature spells.

Every subtype is attatched to a specific type, a forest can only be on land type, an equipment has to be on an artifact type, an aura has to be an enchantment type, and elf has to be on a creature or tribal type.

But Tharmogoyf would just die if all graveyards are empty when you play it. So they had to make it x/x+1. That happens rarely in modern because so many people play fetch lands and a 1 mana instant or sorcery on their first turn etc., but it could still happen and would make Tharmogoyf really suck in that situation because it would just sit in your hand until something goes into a graveyard. It would also die if someone cracks a Relic of Progenitus etc. So I think it being x/x+1 is better. It's also really hard to kill with lightning bolt, because the toughness increases off lightning bolt if it is the first instant in a graveyard before the damage gets applied.
