Interesting~ I gotta admit I'm with you on PKMN in terms of I'm not really a HUGE pkmn fan anymore but the soundtrack and the Aloha challenges were SO refreshing, note I'm only on the second island cause .... this game, while I don't mind grinding, is like...over grindy. That's...kind of hard for me to say. I usually don't think too much about stuff like that. I just play something and if I enjoy it, cool, and if I don't, oh well. I guess to start, and to compare, these are the 2016 Japanese RPGs I've played (psnprofiles.com/shadowmaksim): - Criminal Girls 2 - Final Fantasy 15 - God Eater 2: Rage Burst \ (mostly just listing these two since you kind of listed them as well) - God Eater Resurrection / - Grand Kingdom - Gundam Breaker 3 - Megadimension Neptunia V-II - Nights of Azure - Odin Sphere Leifthrasir - Superdimension Neptune vs Sega Hard Girls - Trillion: God of Destruction - Witch & The Hundred Knight Revival, The - World of Final Fantasy Generally, I did actually enjoy every single one of these. Some more than others obviously. There's also some I'd have liked to play but haven't really gotten yet, like "Super Robot Taisen OG: Moon Dwellers". If I had to choose just one, I guess it'd be "The Witch & The Hundred Knight Revival" simply cause I have an unhealthy obsession with this game. It has its flaws but damn do I love it regardless even close to 3 years after it first released. But if we're not counting rereleases (HD ports and the like), I guess it'd have to go to "Final Fantasy 15". It's far from perfect but I had a blast playing it. Put 130 hours in roughly 2 weeks. Even though I've put the game down for now, I do plan on picking it back up once most of the patches and DLCs release. Hopefully that answered your question in an acceptable manner. Like I said, I don't really think too much about this kind of stuff so I don't really know how to start without laying everything out.

I don't really played much JRPG from 2016, but one of those was The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2, and MY GOD!!!, this series is at least on one level with Persona series. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but beside Persona, there is very few JRPG that give me so much fun and enjoyment. I really want to see more of this games on this channel. Yeah, they already not new, but please, make at least review of Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2. Top 5, by the way, is really good. Too bad that Nintendo 3DS price is like on PS4 in our country, I would love to play those games.

I agree that Pokemon should be on there. I wasn't that interested either in the franchise the past few gens. But this one got me back and playing. I liked the changes, the core game is still fun, and the story was pretty solid. Is actually fun to feel like a Champion and defend the title. Fair amount of good JRPGs in 2016.

Another great video! Personally I would have put FF XV on there just because I'm enjoying the battle system so much. (Which I thought I would hate!). The story leaves a lot to be desired though. I think Square misunderstood what we disliked with FF 13 and left a lot of the story and cinematics on the cutting room floor. I feel really, really bad for people who played FF XV without watching "Kingsglaive". (And yes, it is completely ridiculous to have to watch a feature film before you play a game to have a clue what's going on.). I also wish the side quests were done more like Witcher 3's in that they were meaningful and added to the story or the world. I personally wouldn't mind seeing an FF XV-2 or a similar battle system with FF XVI.

With no joke or hyperbole of any kind, SMT IV: Apocalypse is my favorite game of all time and I think on high contention for best game of all time. It did the same thing for me that Persona 4 Golden when I first played it not that long ago, but even better somehow.

FFXV is actually pretty good, I spent over 150 hrs on it already. No other JRPG ever made me spent so much time on it. Not since FFXII and Valkyrie Profile. Also, I don't think SMT4's sound track can beat FFXV's, and I know many ppl who played both games would agree.

Same. Except I think Ff xv is aight. Just finished getting my 12th magitek v2 the other day. And yeah Ff xv has the better soundtrack but smt 4 apocalypses the better game IMO. Final fantasy and shin megami tensei are my favorite rpg series and I enjoyed Ff xv but the story was alright and the overall game is too easy. I'm on chapter 10 on my lvl 1 run. Not once have I seen a game over screen while playing Ff xv. I wish xv had a hard mode.

I know some may not consider it a JRPG (which is fine, but in my book if it's a RPG made in Japan, then it's a JRPG) but Dark Souls 3 definitely wins the year. Brilliant conclusion to the Souls mythos, only game better in the franchise IMHO is Bloodborne. Pokemon Sun was also great as well. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is also a great one this year, it felt like a Persona-style game in terms of the art style and world. Still working on FF XV, it's good in some aspects but really rough in a lot of other aspects.

Dark souls is a jrpg. Aka a Japanese rpg. And it's one of my favorite jrpg series :) I love from software. The setting and world might be western based but the gameplay is more similar to other Japanese action RPGs like monster hunter and phantasy star rather than western RPGs like skyrim or dragon age

You need to play Neptunia games.... no, you MUST play Neptunia games. Aside from the fanservice, the franchise is great. Nice combat system, funny moments, the main character breaking the 4th wall almost everytime and lot of jokes/parodies about videogame industry. I love Neptunia VII for PS4.

Odinsphere World of Final Fantasy Final Fantasy XV Pokemon ORAS Although, not very much JRPG wise, but I'm definitely hyped for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and 1.5+2.5 for PS4, and Tales of Berseria, despite the stupid censorship. And maybe I'll get Persona 5, I'm still not sure, but still slightly interested, although nervous, because I don't know what I'm getting myself into.

...stupid censorship? The only thing that is changed is the way somebody is stabbed in a cutscene. Big deal. Sure, the idea that stuff is being changed is always disheartening, but this has such little impact on anything that you might as well say the game is essentially uncensored. As for the video. FFXV didn´t make the list but Mirage Sessions did? Kind of baffled me, as I find both to have bland if not downright terrible stories and characters, but vastly preferred the open world in FFXV (which is where you will spend most of your time anyways) to...whatever Mirage Sessions could offer. Would have included Digimon Story: Cybersleuth and mayhaps excluded Fates, due to the first being the best entry in the franchise in years, and the latter, just like its in my eyes vastly overrated predecessor, for its lack of a decent story. Great gameplay for sure, but with the main chunk of the game being story maps it is really hard to overlook that part. Glad with SMT IV apocalypse´s ranking however. Oh, and the hype for P5 is unreal. The fact that it supposedly is closer to Persona 3 and 2 than to 4 in terms of writing and atmosphere fills me with hope that it will truly be an unforgettable experience. Ah, and while I do like Persona 4, finding its story and themes to be better than they are often made out to be, it still suffers from very awkward pacing, overly dramatic dialogue and a generally heavyhanded execution.

It was shocking, it was heartbreaking, you can literally see the horror in Velvet's eyes as she had to watch her beloved brother die right in front of her eyes. David Timmer Magic mumbo-jumbo that essentially looks just as horrific as being stabbed by a blade. Seriously. I do not believe that the object one is being pierced with is that important, not as much as the fact that stabbing takes place to begin with. The only thing that is lost is some realism to the scene, and I say some because the way he was dangling on top of the blade in the original was already rather weird. Not to say that it was an alright decision to alter it, ofc not, and the reason for it is as flimsy as the change itself, but again, if this stops people from getting games we might as well stop translating japanese games to begin with, because certainly more nuance is lost in the translation from japanese to english than in something as insignificant as this. So, to sum up, sure, you aren´t wrong, it is a silly change, but not one worth making a fuss about. Not implying that you did, your comment merely reminded of the hordes of people complaining about every single tidbit that is changed in a game.

I love my Wii U, but I wont come after you. The Wii U does have a lack of games, and Xenoblade and Hyrule Warriors are by far the best games on the system (in my opinion). It also has my favorite Mario Kart as well (love the F-Zero inspired elements in it as well). I hope the Switch gets Xenoblade so I can play that game on the go. I still need to get Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

I get what you are saying with the shin megami series and not that I have played may games persona 3 psp and shin 4 being the only two. I just have a problem with games that take themselves with two much strategy. they become rinse and repeat. I love strategy. it is one of the epic things about rpg's. I jus don't want to be employing the same five over and over again till I get to a place that replaces maybe two of them and leaves the other three on cycle. I realy want to ply tokyo mirage/persona/shin megami... I just wish the strategy would be more varied and not like I said rinse and repeat. will be repacking up shin 4 before the next year is out though because i didn't finish said game due to a misunderstanding of how to level my characters.

I didn't like Fire Emblem Fates myself. I found the story to be awful. I was quite disappointed, since I imported the JP version and gave it the fan translation. I was hyped for the game and it fell short for me. Also god I found TMS#FE to be even worse. It is an abomination that needs to be purged, shoddy localization work or no. And now for my favourites, if you wanted to know. 1. Trails of Cold Steel 1 AND 2. Both games released this year and were given to us by the masterful Xseed. Fantastic games, fantastic story and excellent gameplay. Love it. Though I am a slut for Falcom games. 2. Trails in the Sky SC. Continuation of TitS, again Falcom. Same universe too. Sue me. 3. World of Final Fantasy. Christ, what a surprise this game was. Expecting a cash grab and instead got one of the better Final Fantasy games of recent memory. Loved collecting creatures and stacking them. Obviously inspired by Pokemon, but I preferred this game to Sun and Moon. Also has a Xenogears secret boss which was fantastic 4. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. Yeah, solid game. Love me Vanillaware 5. Final Fantasy XV. On characters alone this game is worth playing. I have many complaints but fuck me I love the lads. Well written characters. Ignis is my boy.

Why?.. or am I missing something this is the first jrpg the story is awesome and got me into the RPG world I have about 1000 hours on it and I went looking for the closest game to ff xv and have been dissatisfied so far ff xv is awesome but being the first RPG I have ever played makes me a baby in the RPG world but still the story goes on after you finish the main story with hours of fun, fun, fun so please explain why ff xv does not make your list?
