Alex, thank you for your endorsement and of these other great books, most of which I own. There are so many facets to consider in the production of a successful book, but the one that underpins them all is that the work must have depth and that requires a huge commitment of time and money, all of which are present in your own book of the Fisherfields. I think it unlikely that anyone will ever produce such a fantastic body of work in what must be one of the most inaccessible landscapes in Scotland.

Yes, great topic Alex, thanks for sharing! Excellent choices for a top 5, love Sandra's and Theo's work and Paul's book has inspired many. Saw your comment on Dombrovskis, I did find that one online and love it. I think photography books represent the very best of the art in landscape photography. I do love really well done exhibitions of fine prints as a one time experience. But, photography books are more permanent, and you can experience them and be inspired over time. The amount of time, energy and effort (and financial resources) that go into a really well done photography book tend to elevate the work to another level. I think Rafael Rojas wrote a nice piece in On Landscape on the virtues of photography books. I do have your book on the shelf too, and must say well done mate! I have a special affinity for photography of wild places which tend to involve a ton of effort over longer periods of time just to physically make those images in changing/challenging conditions. Pristine nature at it's best and your work really shows the beauty of the Great Wilderness...Thanks for putting in the hard yards and sharing your work and this place...!

Happily endorse this selection .... mainly as I have them all ! One other for your list that I really like and admire is Julian Calverley's 'North Northwest' .... by his own admission a vanity project with no expense spared (and minimal profit) ..... mostly taken in appalling weather and showing Scotland at it's most dark and moody.

Thanks, Alex for the mention. :) I can only agree with your other recommendations. And I love your analysis of why you love each mentioned book. I have all of them in my library, too.

I can't argue with your selection Alex. My copy of Fragile was damaged recently in a water leak at home. The replacement arrived last week and I've enjoyed reading it again. I think the mark of a good landscape photography book is how often one reads it. The Great Wilderness has been well thumbed since I got it last Christmas. Paul Wakefield's book has been a favourite for many years and I had the pleasure to talk to him at Joe and David's exhibition launch in Nothallerton. The one person I didn't chance to say hello to was you. Theo's book is on my Christmas list this year and if no-one buts it for me, then that will be my first new year purchase.

Ah yes, it was also the first time I met Paul. Good choice on Theo's book!

A selection I can heartily endorse, and a few I didn't know. For anyone considering Alex's book, I was lucky enough to add it my collection earlier this year and can highly recommend it. A lovely book, beautifully produced, with some wonderful images that really speak to the value of exploring a location in depth. A book like this (like all the books in this review) will become harder to find as the edition sells out and time passes. Well worth adding to your library. Thanks Alex.

Nice and timely. Thanks. I have Theo's Iceland Pure, which I love. I may need request this new one as an xmas gift. Paul's book is a stunner in every sense. I am not familiar with the other books but will look into them. Not that anyone cares, but I will offer my five faves :) 1. Vincent and Michel Munier - au fills des songs. More nature than landscape, but beautiful. 2. Michael Kenna - Huangshan 3. Joe Cornish - Scotland's mountains 4. Paul Wakefield - The Landscape 5. William Neill - Photographer retrospective

Thanks for the suggestions. I might have proposed a few of those (particularly Scotlands Mountains) but I stuck to those that were still available. I do need to get one of Vincent Munier’s books though - people rave about them

Ha yes, they are rather hefty! I actually made a shelf specifically for them from oak, and even that is bending!

@alexnail wow! Oak is bending? That's pretty heavy. My old bookshelf is from the olden days. One of those cheap particle board ones from the 1980s. Lol. It's time to replace. 😁

This was a very welcome broadening of my horizon. Many world class images and great inspiration, as you said. Although, as a German, I still believe that we just can't compete in terms of grand landscapes and I'm often feeling that I "have to" resort to more abstract and intimate shots while being jealous of the British landscapes.
@alexnailАй бұрын
It's true that there are fewer, and less expansive, grand landscapes in Germany. But you do have more ready access to the rest of the Alps. It takes me 10-12 hours to drive to Scotland!
