I so agree with The Thing being way ahead of it’s time at the time of it’s release. I remember the 1st time I’ve seen it, I didn’t like it at all, but I just didn’t realize how cool it was back then. Those practical effects are truly something else. Great video!

My father watched the original The Thing in a theater and spent his return home money on sweets. He had to walk home on railroad tracks in the dark for over an hour. When I and my brothers were old enough, we would watch it with him and enjoy how scary it seemed. When JC's The Thing came out, I had heard that it was a shape shifting monster and that turned me off. I did not go see it. When it came to home video, we rented it. We all sat there and watched it, and I have to say that as a teen; it blew me away! I have loved this movie ever since and not a year goes by that I don't watch it. It is not only the best Monster/Sci-Fi movie ever made, but it is also one of the best psychological movies ever made. Never knowing who is real and who is The Thing...Carpenter at his best. Loved your take on it and I agree 100%!

I concur, though there are others worthy of note (I have some caveats for some of them) : Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Alien, Color Out of Space, The Fly, and Invaders from Mars to name a few. For me, _The Thing_ tops them all because John Carpenter has blended so many subgenres effectively and the tension never waivers, not to mention the acting, special effects, musical score, cinematography, etc.. _The Thing's_ opening scenes with the flying saucer and the visit to its crash site harken to the alien invasion trope, cosmic (or Lovecraftian) horror, body horror, a paranoiac "can't even trust your friends" vibe (here I see it trumping the otherwise very comparable _Alien,_ because with that film the antagonist can grow, but it doesn't shapeshift into quasi-human form), a version of the haunted house (if _Alien_ is a spook house in space, then _The Thing_ has transplanted it to the Antarctic) and no way out desperation (again, with _Alien_ the starship Nostromo becomes super claustrophobic when the crew discovers it's not alone, and escape into deep space not much of a viable option; while here the crew is confined to a tiny research station with a nightmarish creature of their own to battle, and outside it nothing but the frozen vastness and no safe haven ). One place in the movie where I think it would be fun to ramp up the terror quotient even more is right after the infamous defibrillator scene, where Dr. Copper has his arms bitten off by Norris-Thing after trying to save his fellow crew member's life. Copper screams as we see that his arms have been reduced to bloody stumps, while the focus is immediately turned back o Norris-Thing as it grotesquely grows into a phantasmagoric nightmare creature with what his neck rising accordion-like to the ceiling topped off by the unspeakable caricature of his face (which you so graciously have chosen to open your video review 😏).. My idea is that although Copper looks to be dead in the film, he really isn't. The action as it stands has has Macready, Palmer and Clark see the spidery iteration of Norris-Thing, which gets incinerated as it tries to scuttle away. After that there's a bit of a lull in the action, but I think rather than Copper dying, right as Macready turns off the flamethrower, we see out of focus in the distance behind them a shape rise up, much like this memorable scene from _Halloween:_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWSsaIOQnMp1l7c However, here Copper-Thing would be similar to Bennings-Thing, which you'll recall, had plant like appendages where his arms had been. In the case of Copper,-Thing though, I'd like to see a more Lovercraftian look, with writhing tentacles growing out of the stumps. And as it comes at them, Macready initially can't get the flamethrower back on, so the'll need to beat a momentary retreat, maybe push a table in its way or something By the way, thanks for the heads-up on the Kurt Russell laughing commentary, which I now really need to see. I thought you'd bring that up that, Anthony. We'll do you last! 😀

Galantski I know you've been through a lot, but when you find the time...I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS ********* COUCH! 😂 Ha ha seriously though, thanks as always for checking in! I really dig your idea of Dr. Copper making a reappearance and what better way than something along the lines of Carpenter's iconic Halloween moment. Yeah that commentary is awesome, if you have the Blu, check it out. I focused on the laughing for the purposes of lightening the mood in this vid, but aside from the laughing, there's a lot of interesting behind the scenes facts and insightful commentary throughout between Russell and Carpenter. Good stuff. Be well!

@@FeverDreamlandTheater 🤣 Nice comeback! Poor Garry. What a fate to become assimilated into a Blair-Garry-Thing! Maybe he should have kept his peace & stayed put on the couch. Then, he-they-it get blown to smithereens by a well-thrown stick of dynamite with accompanying "F.U." from our hero. Which, of course, brings us to the great closing scene with Childs. Now, all the mystery is usually reduced to who, if anybody, is the Thing: Childs? Macready? Both? Neither? And that's as it should be, as perfect an ambiguous ending as Carpenter could have done. But it leads me to still another question. If both Childs and Macready are human, has the threat to the world been averted or does it still exist in some form(s) in the smoldering ruins of U.S. Outpost 31? Sad to say, I'd opt for the latter. Consider that the Splitface-Thing brought back from the Norwegian camp was the Thing's fusion of two researchers and when brought back to the American camp was dead to all appearances when thawed, until Blair made his examination. Besides our hero and Childs, all the others can be accounted for as dead aside from Nauls, though some contend that he must have been assimilated into the Blair-Garry-Thing. Still, I don't know that that's canon or not, so he could be alive as a human or assimilated separately. If it's the latter, then still could be a problem, though the threat could be later than sooner if it freezes. Speaking of Nauls, early in the film, if you recall, he's roller skating around the kitchen, listening to a dark mood-invoking song, Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". I assume you've seen the 2011 prequel, which has an interesting counterpart to that scene. Let me preface my comment by saying I don't hate that movie, though many (most?) people do. I can understand that reaction if they compare it to the classic from nearly 30 years before, but I think it's unfair. Yes, the CGI ruined some decent practical effects. Yes, it really wasn't needed. Yes, it doesn't have the level of paranoia that was so crucial to Carpenter's vision. And yes, parts of it don't make much sense (e.g., at the end, why were they talking about going to the Russian camp? The American camp is no farther, and there are _Americans_ there! Duh.) So, why do I tolerate the prequel, even like it to some degree (I give it a C+ to B-). Well, I really enjoy Mary Elizabeth Winstead's performance as Kate Lloyd, somewhat of a female Macready. I like how it respects its 1982 precursor down to keeping a continuity with it. For example, we see the frozen suicide that was discovered when the Americans flew over to the Norwegian base. And even better, in one of the best sfx we see the horrible way Splitface-Thing came to be. Also, there's the nice coda where we seen the Norwegians hop on the chopper to chase the dog-Thing, a scene that seamlessly flows into the beginning of the'82 film. (BTW, A shout out to Jed the wolf-dog, who was so memorable as an animal actor in the earlier flick. From what I've read, he was a very smart dog, and the scene where he's walking through the hallway and peering into rooms is creepy.) One of the few things about the prequel that's actually better than its predecessor is very subtle, and most viewers would likely miss it, given the unfamiliarity causal audiences would have with the novella that serves as the source material for these two movies, as well as the looser adaptation from 1951. At the beginning--in the very first scene, in fact--when we see Kate alone examining a prehistoric find we can hear Men at Work's international hit, "Who Can It Be Now?" playing. It's a clear nod to John W. Campbell, Jr.'s novella, which is titled _Who Goes There?_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXamh3qEaaemnck Who would win if The Thing went up against the xenomorph from _Alien_? I think The Thing would prevail, since it can assimilate (imagine a Xenomorph-Thing--now _that's_ scary!). Actually, I think the only creature who could handle The Thing would be Godzilla, since he breathes radioactive fire. On the other hand, that assumes he's able to deploy the fire before The Thing got close enough to touch him. Finally, now that he's warning us to "watch Clark", I thought it appropriate to let Blair have the last word. After all, he's "much better" now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKbEhZSPqK1niJI
