1. I watched the PT test send so many guys home. You need to get through the front door, if you want a chance to dance. 2. I ran in boots. 3. I saw guys literally OD on Gatorade. Cramps and vomiting. 4. & 5. In RIP (1980) and the SFQC (1987), I never tried to be an over-achiever. I made sure I always met standards but I saved my energy for tests and other important tasks. Don’t burn yourself out. Be smart.

I was AF not Army. But simply “passing” the PT test isn’t enough. Honestly the PT test is like one of the easiest things you will do. I did field exercises that push you to the limits for hours and a PT test is like 15 minutes. To make sure I could pass the swim portions I used to do my pt test swim, TWICE on a day that I swam. Do it once. Rest 10 minutes and stretch, and then re do it. I didn’t just become a great swimmer but it gave me an unbreakable confidence cause I knew. I could do it twice if I had too.

Here is how I prepare. And this would work for RASP, Ranger School, SFAS and the Q course. Administration - Make sure all of the required admin and medical documents for the course are correct, not missing, and is in hand. Otherwise, that will be your first cut. The next cuts will be on the PT test, and Swim test. PT test - Regardless of your age, strive for the 18-21 year old standards in order to max every event. If you're older than that, and max out, you will impress the cadre. Running - 440 x8 - Simply, I would run a lap on the treadmill at :45 sec - 1:15, rest for the same period of time, then do it over until you reach eight laps. Promise you you will run faster and recover quicker. At 50, I was running the 2 miles in 11:15. I was 5' 11" at 200 lbs. Running shoes, well, I didn't care what shoes I wore when running (brand wise). I believe I was running in New Balance. Now I wear Asics. Since then, I do own a part of Hokoa shoes. They are indeed great running shoes. Let everyone else take-off and pace yourself. Push-ups - Apparently, when doing push-ups, you are pushing up 75% of your body weight. Therefore, bench press, until failure, whatever the 75 % of your body weight is and lift that until you can do the number of "push-ups" you need for your PT test. So, if your max push-up is 100 in two minutes then try to reach that number throughout the course of your preparation. By the time you go to test, push-ups will be easier. Sit-up - Strengthen those hip flexors. I sucked at sit-ups even though I ran around with a six-pack. I just practiced doing the sit-ups as if it were the PT test. So if I needed to do 80 sit-up, I would practice doing 80 sit-ups in two minutes until I reached that goal. Feet - Tincture of Benzoin - Put it on your hot spots. Over time, it will callous those areas. Wear your issued socks inside out. Wear nylons then your issued socks. Powder your feet. Rucking - The "green tick!" Find yourself hilly terrain and wear an 80 lbs ruck when doing your practice ruck marches. Try and get yourself the same type of ruck sack you'll be using and practice with it on those hills. You want to mentally and physical be accustomed to wearing that type of ruck in the course. If you don't have hills near you, you can go to your local Waste Management dump, and use their hills. Or you can get on a tread mill and increase the angle of the running platform as this will closely mimic your "terrain walk." Simply, start with 2% incline, for two weeks, then increase it every two weeks. The most I would ruck would be 15 miles. I would walk for 100 meters then run 100 meters or run for two telephone pole lengths and walk for the next two telephone polls until I completed the ruck "run." I completed 26 miles in 4 hours and 15 min. Swimming - Practice with your uniform and boots. If you can, do a PT test, then swim the required distance. I use the side-stroke. Ropes and Knot Tying - Practice your typical mountaineering knots. You will see them again. Stretch - Start stretching if you don't already. Keepers of the Tab - Be a gray man. You don't want the cadre to know who you are. Until they put you in a class leader position then you have no choice, but even then, "Yes, Sir, Yes, Sir three bags full." Your goal is not to piss off the cadre as they are the "Keepers of the Tab." Instructor Roulette - In Ranger School it was called RI roulette. Yes, there are shitty instructor. Pray that you don't get that guy..."Keeper of the Tab." Go to the official Army websites, for Rangers and SF, as well as Navy, for Seals. Check out their preparation protocols. Incorporate some of their recommendations on conditioning. This stuff wasn't around back in the 80s. Good luck.

To add on this, when I was in the Army I had the minimum passing score of 16 minute two mile run. It was pitiful for my age even though I maxed push ups and sit-ups. I asked our BC who was a triathlete and he stated to get better you have to build your anaerobic base and leg strength. Focus on your body running and operating at an elevated heart rate for extended times. Don’t focus on distance yet, jog at a slow pace for 45-60 minutes and once your comfortable with that then focus on distance then improving run time. Also, start a leg strengthening routine. I started doing squats, leg extensions, calf raises, and yoga stretching. In three months time with this regiment and a ruck march here and there I improved my two mile run to couple seconds over 13. I didn’t have to do my final PT test before ETS but I’m was in the low mid 11s after ten months or so of training.

The pacing advice for the run is right on. Spend that first half mile getting your breathing and heart right. For my best run time I primarily trained at 2-4 miles but I'd run around a circuit with intermittent sprints. It really gets your heart and legs stronger. Just going out and jogging a steady pace for 2-4 miles won't get you the best performance. I maxed it with a 12:05 run time. My CO was leading the run when I passed him at the 1.5 mile mark. I was the next E-4 to get sent to PLDC.

Good vid. I did selection in 88’ and I would add to run dirt roads cross country. My Dad was an Army officer and had coached track. He put me on a training plan to lift chest Monday’s and Thursdays, back Tuesday and Friday’s and legs Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. Legs included runs. Wednesday morning was distance 2.5, 3.5 and 5.5, Saturdays was speed work sprints, striders and intervals. 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and work. I was one of the smallest in class, but by far the fastest and strongest. I thought selection was easy physically, it just wears your body down. We lost a lot of guys on PT test and swim test. I would add swims and rope climb for technique. Great advice bubba!

Definitely hear ya on the pacing at the start of a run. It always takes me about half a mile to a mile before I settle into my run then it’s cruise control after that. My goal is always to slowly pick up the pace over time and really go for it when I’ve got under half a mile left.

Great advice Buck. For the PT test, you are spot on. So many guys start out sprinting too fast and by the halfway mark they are out of gas. I start off at a medium pace, get my breathing down, get my body used to the tempo. It also serves to help you calm down and get focused instead of letting the adrenaline take you over. Then, once i pass the halfway mark, i increase my pace, then the last 1/4 mile I'm pushing as hard as possible. I end up passing many runners who started out sprinting earlier. Point is, my second mile is always faster than my first mile. Hope that helps.

Things that helped my PT were learning to coordinate breathing with the exercise's movement. And relax anything not necessary for the exercise's standards. Sit ups, for example. I found that if I relaxed my neck and throat, the sit up motion acts like a bellows and the air would move in and out without extra effort on my part. And my diaphragm was bo longer working against my abs. Running, I liked to get off quick for a 100 yards or so to avoid getting stuck in the pack. Then I would settle into a decent pace for the first mile. Then increase it every quarter of the 2nd mile until I was pretty fast. For increasing speed, I used couple of interval patterns. Run a quarter mile fast. Walk the next quarter briskly. Repeat. Next: jog 30 seconds. Run 30 seconds fast. Walk 1 minute. Repeat .

Something that I noticed helped with my running a bit too, is rucking. If you’re able to shuffle run or jog with roughly 30 pounds on top of your Bodyweight, running in PT gear will be a breeze. Couple this with leg strengthening workouts, and some HIIT, and I guarantee you’ll see some improvements.

1. Have a buddy grade your push-ups. On the PT test do your first 10 slowly and deliberately. Increase speed as you continue. If you start out bouncing and doing sus pushups you will set the tone for more stringent grading than necessary. 2. Talk to other candidates beforehand, find an unofficial “ability group” guys that usually run a certain pace, fall in with them. Also use the time between sit-ups and the run to do a couple warmup starts. Don’t be the guy who just sits stagnant for an hour in the cold and then try and bang out a five-mile. The army standard is a minimum of 10 min rest between events, but in large classes you will be waiting longer either before or after each event.

Great advice, but personally I would recommend extending your long run out past 5 (at least 7-10), especially since 5 is what you will be tested on. With any sub half distance, I prefer having a lot of easy, longer mileage under my feet so that the actual test distance is more of a short/medium run rather than a long run. A good rule of thumb is the 30/70 rule (70% of weekly mileage should be easy, conversational pace; 30% hard training). Most novice runners underestimate the power of high volume, slow pace mileage. Before you know it, 35 min 5 milers will be your easy run day. Really good advice though, especially the pacing. Every pt test I see soldiers sprint the first lap and then drop off.

I had to slow down from an 8:30/8:45-9:30 to an 11:07-11:30 pace. Near the end I was able to speed up to a brief 6-7 min pace for a few meters, and I know if my thighs hasn’t started locking up, I could’ve hit 7-8 miles 👀 This advice is something I’ll listen to to over prepare for basic training in two months

When I was looking at going into para rescue I was talking to some instructors about training ahead of time and they said PT test multiple times a week.... swim as much as you can, run as much as you can, focus on breathing. Said any of the harder schools out there you can take parts of that or all of it and get far with it. One tip that I read a while back from a seal was run telephone poles.... jog to one and sprint to the next and do that over and over and over and over and over. Then other days go for distance at a consistent pace

I'd say go to a good running store that actually has guys that know what they're looking at, and have them evaluate your running style and what kind of shoes fit you. Used to get awful shin splints and ankle problems, collapsing arch, all that bullshit. Hit up a nice running store, did a 15 minute evaluation, and its been 3 years since any of those injuries have popped back up.

I never had an interest in trying out for the most elite groups in the Army but in my late 30s and early 40s, my push ups and sits ups were in the 80s. I never never did a single one though. I kept my body conditioned, and I worked out almost everyday. I thought about buying the Hoka myself. My feet are messed due to military service. Now maybe I’ll consider a pair.

Started talking to a recruiter last week. If I pass my background check and get a moral waver for being a dumb kid, 28 now. I’m going to go in as a medic. Hopefully in the SOF. I have a lot of training to do. I was 130lb less than 3 months ago, gained ten pounds since and I’m going to train till the day I leave... also studying for that asvab. Discovered this your Chanel yesterday. Thank you for your content.

Gonna have to want it so much harder than that. If you have a mentality that you’re dumb or weaker it’s gonna be all you’re thinking about in the pipeline, assuming you’re looking at the X-ray program
@obamavariant9128

Cody Dale I don’t think I’m dumb. I just understand that what I did as a kid may not allow me to be accepted into the military... and at my strength and size today there is no possible way to succeed. That is why I’m training to get stronger and smarter... hopefully I will know more on my moral wavier in the following week. Getting arrested for pot doesn’t make my younger self smart. Understanding the odds doesn’t make me want it less. I have the will to succeed and the heart to face odds stacked against me. That’s all... thanks for lighting a fire under my ass this morning, now I’m about to get after it.

You plan on doing an enlistment in the Marines getting out and going back in the Army? No hate but have you considered Marsoc? I did 10 years in the Marines I worked on airplanes and I do regret not going for my dream early.

@@oldbenkenobi2864 yes I've considered MARSOC as well, but I have a couple issues: astigmatism and rhinitis, and I after I get out of USMC I will get those two cured/surgery done and get back to it if life permits to and if it's something that is allowed to go in with. MARSOC really gets my attention but just seemed more attracted to SF or 75th. Again, if it's permitted to, I will do anything on my capability to get what I must do.

If you're not familiar with the Hoka One One brand, they are expensive but worth it. You can save some money by going to a running shoe store trying out different Hokas then go online to purchase the shoe you want. I've purchased my last 2 pairs from Ebay with at least a 40% discount.

When I attempted to go through, over half the class failed the first PT test and it was due to a lack of sleep and being prepared, if you are used to the normal pt test given in your company/ battery (i was FA) you will fail, you need to be in the top 5% of overall scores to have a chance in the PT test in selection. If you dont have the perfect pushups and perfect situps theyll count them as zero every single time until your time is out. Fortunately this isn't what took me out of SFAS, but it is what took out the other two I went with.

I was psyop, I learned from my first nco to warm up your joints and heart rate before they run. I would stretch and jog in place a little to get my breath going. Before that my first quarter mile was murder until I got warmed up and my breathing was settled.

I don’t know why this reminded me. One time at a track meet I was running the mile relay and right before I ran I ate a shit ton of nachos from the concession stand. So when I started running I got about 200 meters in and started puking all over myself while running and I kept going and the guy in the next lane was slightly behind me and he got some on his shoes and started throwing up beside me and we kept running puking our asses off in front of a couple hundred people. Ah great times.

Never seen an operator that claimed to know it all, the ones I've seen share their experiences so others can learn. Fairly certain most of them even say there's no single best way to do most of this stuff, you have to find what works for your body.
