I once asked a salesman "what is this doc fee?" He explained that it was the fee for taking the car onto the dealership receiving dock and getting it ready for sale. I asked, "Then, what's this dealer prep fee?" He spoke for about a minute giving an explanation I didn't understand nor believe. I walked out of the dealership, but as a result of your videos, I am far better prepared to talk to a salesman. Thanks!

why would you give your salesman, who has spent valuable time answering your questions and test driving, a hard time about a doc fee or dealer prep fee? they arent going to make a difference in payment. just remember that salesman dont set the prices. if you buy a vehicle and demand the prep fee be removed, dont be surprised if they dont detail the vehicle or put any fuel in it. all because you refused to pay for it. our time is valuable too. if we dont sell we dont get paid.

@@thestranger1164 if the dealership wants to sell above sticker, i sell above sticker. afterall, its not my dealership. when you work for someone, you do the job you are paid to do. in the end, you dont have to purchase if you dont see the value. in fact, only a fool would do so. we dont sell customers. customers sell themselves. if you are willing to pay 5 or 10k over im not going to stop you. im sure if you have purchased a home, you didnt complain about the fees associated with closing.

I'm from Florida and work in taxation, never pay the "Dealer fees" it's a rip off. Always ask what's included in that, most of the time they will make stupid excuses. If you go to the Florida Department of Revenue search under Documentary Stamp you will find all the information you need to buy a car or house calculating the right fees.

one favorite tactic of dealers in my neighborhood is they advertise a ridiculous low monthly payment for a car. When you come to the dealership to negotiate, they tell you that the payment is only for people with A ++ credit and a sky high credit score. You tell them that when you went to the bank to get prequalified for an auto loan, the bank employees congratulated you on your excellent credit score. The dealer says "That does not mean anything. We have our own standards."

I want to thank you for this video. I started to make a deal with the local Volvo dealer here in Fort Myers for a 2021 XC 60 for $71k in all the documentation I noticed this extremely high fee for docs. I immediately told them the deal was off unless they can bring that fee down to $99 they said no. In the mean time I called my home town Volvo dealer in Columbus, OH. they gave me a better deal $1k cheaper and only charged me $150 for doc fees which I consider reasonable given what the FL dealer wanted. The Ft. Myers Volvo dealer I will never do business with again.

@JohnPaul-ol5zl
@JohnPaul-ol5zl Жыл бұрын
Good for you. Being Educated on the matter/game is Rule #1, being ready to walk away if they are not reasonable is Rule #2. There are obviously other rules to follow, like not Wanting to buy a car that is beyond your Income-Affordability, but those first 2 rules are the prime-beginng to it all. I had a salesman offer me $12,500 for my trade. When I told him they are selling for $21K-$22K, he said he wouldn't sell mine for that high.....I chuckled inside, thanked him for his time and walked out. That afternoon I made a quick deal at another dealership that was a little over $3,000 less than that one dealership's offer Out The Door. A $3,000 savings might not be great in this crazy market, but my specific situation had me in a real Need to purchase a new truck.....base-trim level, but it does the job. Best luck to all out there. Take your time in doing your research so you essentially know what a fair Out The Door price is for the vehicle you are looking for. Although observation of the fees is important, I find that the OTD price is in the end what matters. It's up to the salesman what he does to get to the OTD price on his end, or very close to it. EXAMPLE: If he is at $35,000 OTD, and you are at $33,000 ..... noticing they have $1,800 of BS fees or what name they call such bs charges, you can point them out if you like or just ask how close they can get to your $33K. It don't hurt to ask. They may surprise you and say $33,200, which might be good to close the deal. It's up to each individual. Also, some salesman are willing to negotiate more than others. Just keep trying.

THANK YOU for being a channel that FINALLY talks about HAWAII! 👍 Buying a car is HELL in the Aloha State! Demand outstrips supply, and most islands have only one dealer per brand, so you can’t price dealers against one another (and they know it). The price of paradise is high. Some updated estimated shipping prices from the mainland to Hawaii (as of 6/2021) from West Coast ~$1,500-1,700.

Born and raised in TX, so I've bought a few cars here. There are plenty of decent/good dealerships around the northeast TX area. Definitely do your research on what you want. December/January seem to be the best time to buy when they mark down the old stock- the 2020 vehicles right now. I bought a 2018 Chevy Silverado in December '18 for $28,800 that was stickered at $44,500ish. The interesting thing is that with all the computer bs on newer vehicles, they know it only has 8,700 miles on it. They've called and sent me letters the past few weeks offering me more for trade in ($31,300) than what I paid for it, but I don't need more payments! lol. Texas is a solid place to live, and people are generally nice here. But car salesman have to make a living, and they make more money when you pay more- just keep that in mind.

HOORAY I guess?? My home state did not make the list. The trouble starts in my state when you have to car ownership tax every year. The form says at the top in obvious, bold lettering "This tax is based on the car you claim ownership of on January 2nd of the current tax cycle year. " Then the form lists the information on file for you at the DMV as to make, model, and model year of your automobile. Then the form asks you to cross out anything that is not accurate and hand letter on the paper form any corrections to the information. The tax amount is based on how new the car is and what calendar year you bought the car. At first the amount is multiple hundreds of dollars. If you hold on to your car long enough, eventually the resale value of the car is so low that your amount due is a two digit number. The way you game the system is to hold onto your old clunker car until mid-January so it is the taxable car and delay buying the fancy new car.

Thankfully St. George, UT is not too far away to go buy a car.

Another thing to watch out for in Florida: some dealerships don’t like customers that already have a loan in hand from their bank. Their tactic is to try to get you a better deal on paper in reality they hit you with a higher interest rate and the car price stays the same. RUN OUT OF THERE when this tactic is pulled. It’s called leverage and the dealerships don’t have that card to play with if you already have a loan in hand.

One thing I learned in my younger years was to never, ever finance through dealerships and to always always procure financing through your own financial institution, also don’t trade vehicles in, always sell private sale and use that money as down, the Dealership will also quote your trade in low so they can make money on that too.

If we're just talking about taxes, then it really depends on where the car is going to be located that matters. I bought a car in WI once, paid 7% state sales tax. Had I bought the car locally near where I lived (within IL) I would have only paid 6.5% sales tax, but at least for IL, when you buy a car from out of state, you pay state sales tax rates, not county tax rates. Now obviously, talking about pricing, yeah there can be differences. I know when I bought my truck (in WI) I got a great deal at $31k for a crew cab 2013 Silverado LT (1500) with 4WD, whereas the lowest price I could find in IL was about $35k. Definitely worth the 2 hour drive into WI IMO (saved me $4k). Now i guess the fact I dealt with this dealer before might have helped, but even on my first deal with them, I saved $2k over what I would have paid if Had bought from from someone in IL, versus buying in WI.

A few months ago i was thinking of buying a new car. Have plenty of money for a 20% dp on just about anything i would want. I'm in San Antonio, TX. Went to just about every dealership in and around the city. All of them had huge above MSRP mark ups. The most reasonable of these was 3k over. Yeah. Many of the dealerships, especially Hyundai and Kia were very low inventory. But even the places that had a lot of inventory (Chevy, Dodge) were treating the situation just as if they had low inventory. All also had insane dealer package ad-on mark ups. Usually around 2,500. Im in my 50's and i've bought plenty of new cars. I know the ins and outs and have never had a problem negotiating great deals and getting all the BS fees removed (after getting ripped off on my first dealership buy when i was 18 and educating myself thereafter). Finance managers hate me because they can never get me to buy a single one of their BS financial products. Anyway, despite having great credit and being ready and willing to buy, i could not get a single dealership to negotiate with me in any serious way. It seemed both salesmen and sales managers were more interested in waiting for a moron to walk on the lot who was willing to come in and pay 10k plus over MSRP for a 30k car or 20k over for a 50k car. Anyway, i will wait until the market comes back to earth. I want a new car, but i'm not willing to overpay or go too far out of my way to do it.

Dealerships vary. I bought my Dodge truck at a dealership in Albuquerque in 2008 (before the bottom dropped out). A month later the dealership was closed, the owner, GM, and others were charged with various crimes. Shortly after, the entire dealership was taken over by a different company. I agree, NM dealerships do tend towards the rip-off, but not all of them.

I live in NJ and buy a lot of cars. I actually don't find it too bad as long as you are paying attention. It's agreed upon sale price, sales tax of 6.625%, tags and doc fees which aren't great but not the worst I've seen. And there's a tire fee of a few dollars per tire, maybe $5 or so. As long as you're not getting taken for a ride in finance it's not terrible. Thinking about moving to Delaware, no sales tax would save me quite a bit of money.

Not sure if this is typical but here in Wisconsin I made a deal with a salesman over the phone, was told that the truck had absolutely no rust and sent deceptive pictures. When I got there the truck clearly had rust on the rocker panel, visible while walking up to it, once it got up on a lift you could punch a hole through the panel with your thumb. Seemed like he was just trying to get me excited and committed and in the dealership and then try to convince me the rust was just cosmetic.

If you buy a car new in any state and then title/register it in another state, you will pay sales tax. Each state has different ways of getting their number, but they will get it. Some states make you pay the difference between what you paid when you picked up the car and the rate of the state where you are titling the vehicle. I wouldn't live in CA, so I cannot say what is or is not "illegal" (I doubt it, they'll just get their sales tax anyway).

When I lived in the Tidewater Area of Virginia back 1988 and worked at a dealer in Chesapeake, VA (one of the big Auto Malls) it seemed to me that Virginia was a horrible state to buy a car in. Not only did the dealers add a bunch of fees into the selling price, but high pressure trickery was the norm. Also the god-awful amount of stickers you had to put on your car for the city and county you lived and stupid fee that went with it, and they had to be prominently placed on you windshield only making more blind spots. Car taxes were a pain in the butt too, and many people in the Tidewater Area maintained a North Carolina address to pay lower rates on annual tag renewals. So to me, Virginia is a bad place to buy a car. And don't get me started on the used car rip off artists that surrounded all the military bases in the area. Those sewer scum had no issue with charging 50% or more interest on buy here, pay here loans and weekly payments and repoing the car after one missed weekly payment. They got a lot of sailors that way. Since that was over 30 years ago though, things may have changed in Virginia quite a bit since I left there.

I'll. Never buy another new vehicle in Memphis Tennessee again , to many hidden charges that were a little confusing . I know that new dealerships are not auto detail shops , but we waited around for fours with a close to 900 Credit score for paper work to get finalized . What was really the kicker when I got home with this new Nissan Maxima - they didn't even use soap too wash it after waiting that long on the paper work too get done . I washed it myself when we got home ( I was fit too be tired when spending over $40,000 on it )boy did I rake them over the coals on a survey I gave . Anyway there's no way I'd ever go back too them , of course the dealer Manager called after the they got wind of my survey - tryed to butter me up and tryed to talk me into coming back for a detail . LOL - they done blowed it with me . I'm that way , shame on them . That was in 2012 , I've since bought a new GMC Arcadia , and it was funny my local dealership had enough sense to at least clean it up . My complaint for the day , beware buy local . Still ticked off from years ago ..... this was Jim Keras Nissan in Memphis buy the way .

Ive only had one dealer run my credit payed my lawyer to write up a letter threatening to take legal action against them for them agreeing on video to not run my credit. Got a nice discount on top of the original sales price. Not ever dealer will agree to the video thing I just walk out. The dealer still makes a profit but not a huge amount. Except for the one dealer who ran my credit without my approval I still have good relations with all the dealers I deal with ,they know I'm buying a car from them and I know they ain't going to rip me off.
