When Vivi says "white" she is talking about skin complexion, not race. Many Chinese have very light skin, much lighter than yours. The preference for light skin is about class, as she described, not race. To her you are not a white man, you are a western man.

Chinese girl here; white people are WHITE people. Like literally "white" people. The division between white and western is really thin, and it's actually reflected in Chinese racism towards black people despite China and black people having no substantial history (that I know of, anyway) outside of immigration culture in the last like 500 years. It's originally a class issue that unfortunately CARRIES OVER to race (partially due to western influence as well). But yes. Vivi is talking about skin complexion in this specific context.

Great video! Maybe do a video on what Chinese girls hate... My girlfriend when I was in China told me off for using sun cream on a hot day climbing a 'mountain' (large hill). She said it's very feminine for a man to do that in China and I should not do it. I said I'd prefer to prevent skin cancer and not burn and was quite happy being a 'feminine' man in this case. I often wonder if she was just extreme or many Chinese girls really think that.
@chenyirun54149 жыл бұрын
+True Mexico As a Chinese male, I would say that being feminine will definitely bring you some pressure from peers. It's a common phenomenon around the world. But in this case it's different. Using sun cream is nothing about being feminine. It just protects our skin. Some people don't understand the difference between being feminine and doing things girls do but most men don't do. Being feminine is more about personality, but there are many good things that men should also do, but many people just don't realize the importance of them. People have to change the way they think.
@TrueMexico9 жыл бұрын
+奕润陈 Good to read your feedback! As you know, using sun cream stops you burning and is proven to help prevent skin cancer. Very old science now. But of course many things are deep routed in culture, I guess like men using creams on their face being a feminine atribute in China. Though I imagine this is changing now especially in the large cities. With pale skin, I used it anyway and she was fine with it of course. Many things I was happy to be adapable with her being frome a different culture, you have to be! But obviously putting suncream on my pale face in 30C sun was a must and something I wasn't going to change. It' an interesting discussion, the thigs western people should be adapatable with for their Chinese partner in China and things you just can't do, like not putting on sun cream because it's not 'manly' in China.
@chenyirun54149 жыл бұрын
True Mexico Sure you don't have to change at this. It's true that most people I know think men using sun cream this action itself is feminine and say something bad about them without concerning those men's skin conditions. I think this is ignorant but I used to think so and make fun of those men because I didn't have my own opinion back then and I just imitated other people. Now I know it's wrong and I have changed my mind. This kind of thoughts have hurt many people and I'm sorry for what I did. But now I've changed my mind and I'm glad to say that people are also changing their minds as I know.
@TrueMexico9 жыл бұрын
+陈奕润 Eric Chan So the sun cream on mens faces really is something in China that people make fun . Do you think it's changing? I mean now China has a huge middle class with a lot of money to spend surely all the big brands like Nivea and more expensive brands are trying get men/young men to use face creams? Must be a huge market once there is a shift in thinking.
@chenyirun54149 жыл бұрын
True Mexico Haha true. Actually last time I saw my roommate who is from Shenzhen were using facial mask to improve his facial conditions. That was the first time I've ever seen any man doing facial mask in real life, and after that I'm considering to do it myself. IT IS a huge market because it includes half of the population of China, and it's an unexplored place. If those companies would like to make some good advertisements to change more people's mind(All Chinese people, not just Chinese men), I think it would be a good revenue

Funny, the Chinese view on pale skin held true in the west as well. Tanned skin meant you worked out in the fields or were a labourer while the upper crust of society, who stayed indoors, had pale skin. Lol. I got married in the US and it was a very small wedding. We snapped a few pics of course, but no photo shoot. No - we had to save that for our first trip to China together. My wife hired this company to do this HUGE photoshoot that took from early morning til late at night - probably a 16 hour day if I had to guess. Most of the photos actually turned out great and we're really glad we had it done, but she hated so many photos that she had probably half of them deleted almost immediately. Then the rest we had them photoshop to make us look better. The hardest part of the shoot was the underwater one which was her favorite. She has a name that basically means ocean, so naturally she loves water. She had no trouble being in it (although maneuvering in it was almost impossible for her), but I (in spite of generally having no issues in water) kept choking on water and gulping it down because she would take so long getting in position, and then she wouldn't get it right so we'd have to keep doing it all over again. I nearly drowned and she tells me she wants to go do it again!
