"No pun" means very different thing in Chinese as compared to that in English. The "puns" that were banned were those that replaces idioms/well-known sayings with homophones or characters with similar sounds that completely change the original phrase's meaning. What's more, it is more related to advertisements, which were overdoing that -- no related to your daily conversations or what not. That's it. It is nothing like what "pun" means in English. You are still allowed to use puns otherwise, no restrictions at all.

The #5 would make sense to name yourself only Chinese names, its same with most countries like NZ, we can only name our babies with English Alphabet Characters, imagine naming my baby using Chinese characters in NZ, it would be impossible for the people to input Chinese characters in the computer since our main language is English.

it could have been possible to use Chinese characters to transliterate your name phonetically, my 1st name is Marek, which was transliterated into Ma like horse, Rui like clever and Ke like science, Chinese friends and acquaintances called me Lao Ma, old horse or Xiao Ma, little horse, many of my students called me Ma Lao Shi, teacher horse, Ma like horse is a common surname for the Hui minority, a Chinese Muslim minority well known for their noodles, it makes sense to use Chinese characters in China on Chinese documents just as much as it makes sense to use the language of the country you live in on documents in that country

Hi, 王勇. Have to say that NO.1 is wrong, sorry mate I have to pick it up because i do not want you to make any wrong decision to drive your car head to the pedestrian. According to the traffic law, you have to slow down when passing the zebra line, and must stop when pedestrian crossing. Exactly the same as what US or UK. Remember and do not follow those stupid drivers.

Actually, the government only banned the usage of puns in official/formal writings or broadcasting, because in Chinese there are tons of different characters having the same pronunciation. For example, the following characters all sounds like the letter "B" in English) but they have different meanings: must (必), cash (币), green (碧), wall(壁), turn off (闭), avoid (避), arm (臂), jade (璧)... So just to avoid confusion and legal issues caused by puns , and also to help children learn the correct way of using different characters, puns has been forbidden in formal printings and broadcasting. But it's only for legal and educational purposes, nothing prevents you from using them in your daily life with friends or whatever. It's a more of a code of conduct that applies on certain departments/fields.

I always believe in humane laws such as the yielding rule in the U.S. Cars are supposed to yield even if pedestrians break rules by jaywalking. But then again, the road rage in the U.S. is also a problem so even if we have the yield law, pedestrians are still often not yielded ending up with some car accidents. I believe that pedestrians and drivers should all obey traffic rules. If it's a red light, stop walking or driving. I guess the Chinese government is tired of Chinese people jaywalking as pedestrians everywhere, even in the U.S. and not just China, often go their merry ways without looking at coming cars. I get annoyed whenever I see some Americans walking slowly across the street breaking their pedestrian rule while I have to wait for them to slowly cross the street with the green light on for cars. I mean, I don't mind yielding to pedestrians who dash through the intersections instead of slowly walking while I have to wait for them. I guess the Chinese government wants to force the civilians to obey rules, whether they are pedestrians or drivers. I still believe in yielding being a driver, but I am quite annoyed sometimes by some jaywalkers who just walk slowly and leisurely while I wait in my driver's seat looking at the green light about to turn yellow. lol.....

As far as I know, you are not supposed to make a full stop for pedestrian at least in Boston when you have green light. You will have a highly chance to have the car behind bumped into your car if you made a full stop. If someone is trying to cross the street when you get a green light, you can either wait or move slowly to give the pedestrian some time to cross the street.

A law is a decision made by the country, but a policy (translated to "法规" is more suitable) could be made by the local government and only people who live in that area need to obey the policy ("high beam" in Shenzhen is an example). Basically, laws are made in the national level and policies are in the local (provincial or city) level

#2 is not a law, it's a tradition which happens in the poor areas(like villages in mountains). It's hard for them to see many vehicles so kids there show their respect to the cars. Sometimes drivers(especially for tourists ) will stop and give them some pencils, notebooks or some money to support those poor students.

car headlights are only recently starting to become a point of conversation as a lot of cars low beams are simply not good enough. that is a problem in the USA so i can only imagine how terrible some of the crap Chinese cars headlights are. also you guys better have dash cams in your cars over there. that not stopping for pedestrians thing sounds like a great way for a native Chinese person to get a lot of money out of a foreigner.

Hmmm... Cmilk. I live in Canada, and I married a native girl 48 years ago. At that time, I was in the canadian armed forces. I was told, by the seargent, etc, in no uncertain terms, that it was very unwise to have a relationship with a native girl. So, I will give you a piece of advice: Treat Viv with the utmost respect. Do not make fun of her, even in jest. Old Chinese proverb: Small barbs will surely destroy the tiger in the long run. I know this from experience. At first we had little respect for each other, and make jokes of each other. This almost destroyed our relationship after several years. Now we treat each other with the greatest respect, in word and in deed. I think this is why we are still together. Please treat Viv with the greastest respect and love. Cheers, Rob.
