To be fair, I'm quite sure the old Mickey cartoons weren't strictly for children. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if The Mad Doctor was instead meant to be shown to an older audience! If not, then there's the possibility that Disney knew that most kids liked to be scared more than they let on. Don Bluth seems to believe something similar, that you can put a child audience through nearly anything as long as there's a happy ending attached.

Fun Fact: When I was about four on TV they aired Disney shorts from 30s to 50s adressed to kids. And I remember SEEING Mickey's garden and Mad Doctor back then. They didn't give me nightmares luckily.

As a bit of a horror fan, watching these are kinda cool. It's a nice mix of that vintage feeling behind old footage and a macabre fascination with all the creepy things in them. "Runaway Brain" has to be my favorite, though. The tension in the plot and the relatability to Mickey going out of his way to make Minnie happy had me sucked in.

The thing about runaway brain: I've actually watched it several times when I was a small kid and also when I was a tween, I have enjoyed watching that cartoon. I've always found it funny and personally quite entertaining. I actually loved the way it was animated and it was visually my favorite among Mickey cartoons, but alongside that I've gotten a several laughs out of it.

For "The Mad Doctor," cartoons in the 30's weren't really made with kids being the main demographic. It was because of the 80's cartoons that cartoons became seen as kids stuff. This was due to the way they marketed toys made for children. So, while creepy as hell, "The Mad Doctor" wasn't really targeted at children.

Interesting thing about the mad doctor (the character). That cartoon wouldn't be the last time he tried to preform a live surgery on Mickey. Although this version is much more PG, it happened again in Epic Mickey, where in that game he tries to remove his heart with a plunger for plot reasons. If you haven't played Epic Mickey I actually highly reccomend it. It's like a big history book about the forgotten Disney cartoons.

I loved this video, but the one thing I feel the need to bring up, is that back in the early days of animation, something like The Mad Doctor, wouldn't be considered just for kids. At the same time, Walt and many animators believed that kids could handle scary things as long as there was a happy ending. I think that's really cool!

Try getting 100% like my friend did. He went through the game multiple times. He is still doing this today, because there are so many quests, one quest becomes around 20 sidequests. It takes hours to get close to 100%. I love this game. Bringing back forgotten characters, this is perfect. And the story was amazing. The characters likeable.

In the case with the #1 pick, back in the days where short films and news reels were often shown before a feature film or during intermission, cartoons were often geared towards all age groups regardless, though some were more adult in nature than others. Disney was no different in that department. This pretty much explains why the short is a lot darker than it should be, and why something like it would most likely not be permitted by the studio. The early years of filmmaking were a whole different monster compared to today, which is why films like these are fascinating (and somewhat shocking) to watch and observe.

Very true. In the 30's, the younger demographic wasn't quite there yet. Though #1 was still banned in the UK and Germany at the time due to it's unusually strong horror themes.

It's funny, because horror is a legitimate genre of film, and I'm pretty sure even some of the more controversial horror movies, ones that have just as strong, if not extreme horror themes have been released in the U.K. and Germany. Hell, Germany pretty much perfected the horror genre. and made stuff just as strong.

Another thing to take into account with it is that it was during the great depression. There was a lot of dark shit to come out during that time when you wouldn't expect it due to the stress and trauma of the recession. Especially considering therapy wasn't even an option due to both lack of healthy treatments and social stigmas back then. Gotta work out those dark thoughts somehow.

I always found Mickey and the Beanstalk to be creepy because of one particular scene. When Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are starving, Donald goes bat shit crazy and tries to kill their cow with an ax. His eyes go all red, and he yells in his usual gibberish as the poor cow moos in fear, trying to get away from him. Thankfully, Mickey and Goofy stop him. It's really the only creepy scene, but it's creepy nonetheless. That poor cow must be scarred. :C

I love the bold, darkly intense color scheme in 'the Mad Doctor' short. Back then it would have been easier to go for black and white film for a horror cartoon, but the flame like oranges and purple's contrasting with the deep blacks creates a much better atmosphere

For gosh's sake, cartoons weren't just for kids when "The Mad Doctor" was made. Everyone watched them. They were required to be PALATABLE for kids, no more no less. To say that Walt Disney designed that horror show JUST for kids is not exactly true. That being said, "The Mad Doctor" is messed up.
