We had a few 'good' guards where I was. It was just a job to them. Nothing personal. You treat them with respect, and they'll treat you the same. Anyway, I worked in the commissary the last year & 1/2 in and one of the 'good ones' (around Christmas both times) brought in a big bag of Mcdonald's biscuits of various types and said "Dam Mickey Ds messed my order up and gave me too many. Ya'll go in the back and throw those away". For a few minutes we were just a bunch of guys having breakfast. It was a gesture that I'll never forget.

I'm retired from the BOP. I seen a Cuban detainee take 3 cans of mace and 2 bean bag rounds. He never went to his knees, just stood there and said is that all you got? He also had about a 14 inch shank. He weighed about 135 lbs. and was one of the toughest dudes ever. As a CO I would rather deal with someone who had a long sentence than a short timer. I sent less than 7 guys to SHU during my career and then it was over extreme disrespect. Otherwise I handled it differently. Due to the way I carried myself I rarely had issues. I ran into an ex convict a few months ago and he shook my hand and said you treated us like people!

Im happy for this guy. He obviously spent a good part of his life in prison and probably has a record that would keep most people from ever being able to find good employment or housing. But he’s taking a bad life experience and turning it into what is likely a good living for himself instead of doing what a lot of former “convicts” do and returning to what got them in the mess to start with. Bravo Larry Lawton. I’m impressed.

In a county jail I saw a guy bang his door open after the guard left the unit at night and then run up and down the tier with a t-shirt on his head yelling "tee-pee for my bunghole" like Beavis. Something was wrong with the locking mechanism that made it possible to be kicked open. Even though the kid was just clowning around he could've been charged with attempted escape and got mandatory 5 yrs added to whatever sentence he was facing.

That happened to me one time, i had a mega cold like the kind you can only get when its been passed around between 80 guys living together, so i fell asleep early before lock in for the night and when i woke up my door was wide open, you never really know the exact time so i went to walk out of the cell and could tell it was after lock in, i stayed as far away from that door as i could til the cop came by for their wellness checks, not gonna set me up, but same shit, the door somehow slid off the track, but funny you say beacis because we had a kid in there who looked like beavis come to life, and everyone called him beavis, to this day i still laugh out loud just remembering his face and thinking "beavis" to myself

I ran the ER @ a Max Security Prison for many years. I treated my patients by being fair, consistent' keeping my word & with respect when earned. They all knew I didn't play games or favorites. I truthfully was safer with a lot of my inmates/convict's than I was with a multitude of the guards. With the 1s you showed here today, with the exception of the 1 eating all the gas, they were all punks.🤣

I got a family member who’s a correction officer. He said a lot of the mentally ill inmates are the ones that are like wild animals. They are the strongest, it takes a bunch of guys to take them down and even then the inmate is still almost getting back up, or the gas has no affect on them. He said it’s like trying to fight a gorilla with nothing but your fists. It’s like if they have a simpler, more primal brain, then the almost have primal monkey strength too that 5 guys together don’t have.

Mr Lawton, if you think that guy taking that mace is amazing there is a professional wrestler who is older now named Haku (AKA Meng). Considered one of the toughest guys in the business and plenty of bar fight stories. One of the stories has cops spraying him directly in the face with mace. He opened his mouth and was eating the mace, then snapped the handcuffs that were behind his back. It took 12 police to bring him to the ground. An interesting guy to look up if you are so inclined. You might enjoy some of the stories about him.

That guard running his mouth arguing with the inmate needs more experience at his job. You don't whine and bellyache to those you're responsible for. Look the inmate in the eye, treat him like a human being, but don't take no shit from him either. Say it once calm with authority as a warning, then take action if it's not heeded. The inmates know they can rile that dude up.

Larry, I came across this quote and thought of you. "When you're born, you look like parents. When you die, you look like your choices" Take it for your own.

Larry I’ve been watching this show recently and I think it would be awesome if you did a stream one day of it. Like a watch party with commentary over the episode. When I’m watching it I feel like it’s missing your commentary

The guy not responding to mace might have been on some kind of opiate. That may also be why he appears catatonic.

Ok so I dont know spesifically what they used there, but I assume its CS gas which is the type that tricks your brain into thinking it cant breathe, then makes all orifices burn to the point where you cant see and your nose and mouth just runs uncontrollably. Keep going and you start vomiting and go fetal position. I happen to have some experience with this, and someone resiting it like this is not a measure of toughness, its genetic. Fairly common too tbh, in military testing it was found that about 1 in 100 is resistant to it, while about 1 in 1000 is completely immune to it. Ive seen guys who have the willpower to walk their ancles into bloody stumps crack in about 8 seconds to CS gas, while others are perfectly fine doing pushups in a room filled with it.
