What should the minimum spf rating on lip balms be? Because the highest I've seen is spf 30. If one uses spf 50 on the face and spf 30 on the lips, does that mean reapplication on the lips should be more frequent? Also, does hair need protection from UV rays too? If yes, then how? P.s.: Thanks for this video! It was very informative 😊

One sunscreen myth I've heard is that chemical sunscreen absorbs uv radiation on skin, thus overload of "absorbed" free radicals/radiation can likely cause skin cancer or other detriments, so it's better to use "physical" blockers that will scatter. And that one day sunscreen will be proven to be detrimental. I know from watching your vids that physical blockers only reflect about 3% of the rays and absorb the rest. I'm unsure what to make of this data because I've seen that zinc oxide sunscreens turn a light colour under uv light but aren't black like "chemical" sunscreens are. Also, a question I had on your video is on the study showing that sunscreen use doesn't affect vitamin d levels. It mentions that the method was comparing no sunscreen use to spf 17 use. I use spf 50, is the study then not applicable to me? I've also been trying to double apply/diligently use sunscreen after your videos. Also is it best to get vitamin d at 12pm on an extreme uv day for a few minutes or on a uv 3 day for about 15m? Or in the afternoon? I absolutely ABHOR the "sunscreen takes time to absorb myth". I would wait 20m in the toilets at the beach before even thinking about heading out,then never reapplied because I thought if I applied it in the sun it wouldn't work anyway. SO MUCH SKIN DAMAGE 😢 BTW Ive been binge watching your videos this fortnight so much basically this video was like a recap haha!

Favourite myth: "Oh, I don't burn, I tan, so I don't need sunscreen. "
@erinlikesacornishpasty47035 жыл бұрын
This is a mantra I used to say a lot because when I was younger someone actually told me that they thought I had an olive complexion and therefore I wouldn't burn, I would just tan easily. For years, I only wore sunscreen when I was out in direct sun after 6 hours and noticed I was actually starting to get more red. I also wore the wrong shade of foundation on my face for years. About a year ago I got shade matched and was a "fair". I added an SPF to my skincare routine and I was surprised how much it's made a difference.

My favorite or least favorite myth is that you don't need to apply sunscreen when it's cloudy. The truth is, clouds don't really block all the UVA or UVB rays, so our skin still absorbs UV rays and gets damaged. Most people where I live think that I'm dumb for applying sunscreen when there's no sun lol.

Amazing video as always! So, someone left a comment on one of my videos saying that he ‘read a study’ that said we shouldn’t be using chemical sunscreens because they trap heat and raises the body temperature leading to ‘thermal stress’ in our bodies. I’m sure you’ve mentioned before that it raises the body temperature a minuscule amount so not sure what ‘study’ he was referring to 🙃🌞

A lot of KZbinrs (at least the ones I watch), don't really leave the house during the day. @user-zm5tt9bq5u5 жыл бұрын
@@mars9399 Actually it doesn't - you can google for more detailed explanation of SPF protection level validation process, but typically, the SPF is measured by applying 2 mg/cm2 of a sunscreen formula. So it is standardized what amount of product will give the spf promised on the label. This is also where the "teaspoonful for face etc" recommendations are based on. So, if you have two products with spf 20, one thick and one thinner that "goes long way" you are still supposed to use both the same amount (to get same spf).

There are definitely differences of opinion in the medical profession about how much sun exposure is needed for adequate Vitamin D production. Some doctors and scientist think that no sun exposure is needed. I am not one of them. Although oral Vitamin D supplementation is good (and necessary for most people over 60), I am not convinced that the best course of action is to get no sun exposure at all. However, sunburn is ALWAYS bad. And tanned skin doesn’t absorb as much UV as untanned skin, so a tan, especially a deep tan, is likely to be counterproductive. Vitamin D 25-OH blood levels can be easily checked, and I definitely do this in all patients over 50 (older skin is less able to synthesize Vitamin D, which is in fact a prohormone), and in dark-skinned individuals over 40 who live in temperate latitudes. I advise folks (especially pale people) to use a high SPF on their face, ears, upper chest, back of the neck, the back of the hands, the forearms, and on any exposed scalp. That is in part because removal of skin cancers in these areas is often more disfiguring than in other parts of the body. And everyone should avoid sunburn.

Thank you!! I have been told for years that anything more than SPF 30 isn’t more effective. I disproved that long ago because anything less than SPF 80 or so still leaves me sunburned, but few people actually believed me.

I read recently that octinoxate produces free radicals when exposed to UV light. Is that true and how concerned should I be since my favourite sunscreen contains it?

I don't know any other myths but one tip when applying sunscreen is to break it down between your hands and glide it over your skin, dont rub, rubbing makes it more oily. I get great protection.

I've used both SPF 30 and 50 and really noticed the difference since I get sunburnt easily. On really sunny days SPF 50 works better for me whereas with SPF 30 my skin gets sunburnt more.

I wish you can have a video dedicated to talk about the ingredients in sunscreen. Im torn because some people say even a tiny amount of some ingredient can cause a lot of harm while you are saying some are harmful because they are fed in large amount to animals. Please make a new video on this!

I’m literally obsessed with sunscreen, everyone around me thinks I’m insane. I’m 25 and lather it on first thing after I wash my face and do my skin care, even if I’m just indoors. I keep my curtains closed too!

I watched this video and the one u made a year ago about spf and makeup. I still find it impossible to get a 100% sun protection with a full face of makeup. Foundation WILL slide off of the sunscreen no matter what, and I WILL look like a grease ball, knowing the amount required to get total protection. Specially that I live in a country where it's sunny most of the year. Not applying full makeup everyday before work is a big NO for me.

It would be wonderful if you would review the research showing which specific sunscreen ingredients degrade others. If it's worth it, I'm really intrigued about using bicarbonate soda in skin care. I tend to think it's a bad thing cos of the high ph and all that and am shocked that my sister has been using it to exfoliate and cleanse cos it's "natural". A video would be great! :)

Sarah Williams, Senior health information officer, Cancer Research UK Skin cancer is a growing problem in the UK, particularly among older people. Around 11,500 cases a year are related to too much UV exposure from the sun or sunbeds. However, sunscreen isn't the best method of sun protection, whatever the time of year. And you certainly don't need to use it every day. The strength of the sun's rays varies, and between October and March in the UK the sun isn't strong enough to damage your skin. So sun protection isn't necessary - unless you're going skiing, as UV is stronger at higher altitudes. UVA makes up most of the sunlight that reaches Earth, but UVB causes more sunburn, and is also more important for the body's production of vitamin D. Both UVA and UVB are linked to skin cancer. We all need some sun, but it's important not to overdo it and get sunburnt. When the sun is strong, shade and clothing offer the best protection, while sunscreen helps protect the parts you can't cover - choose one with at least SPF15 (for UVB) and at least four stars (for UVA). fashion.telegraph.co.uk/beauty/news-features/TMG11372901/Should-you-wear-suncream-every-day.html

i have a HUGE OCD fear of baking chemicals into my skin so am terrified of sunscreen. I even wear little, if any makeup. i just don't know how to get over this fear. i do try to use some natural essential oils to help with some protection, while still allowing the healing I feel like I need from the sun. I won't say which oils, because i already know I am gonna get a lot of hate. :-( i am not trying to be one of the stubborn ones. I have several autoimmune diseases and developed a huge fear of a LOT of chemicals/ingredients. I want to get over the fear of its healthier, but don't know how. Thankyou for such an informative, fact based video. Many blessings!!
@brittniep92195 жыл бұрын
Jen M “baking chemicals?” I think watch more of her videos! You don’t bake your skin. Otherwise we’d all be dark brown and cracked! :p Your skin produces natural oils to protect your skin, you drink water to replenish your body, you also can add moisture and sun protection from these products. You wash them off at the end of the day.

I find the makeup SPF so annoying. Why don't companies have to give you the correct SPF corresponding to normal amounts of makeup used? It's crazy to think people would use 1/4 teaspoon of foundation.

I'd like to see some info on the sunscreen-acne relationship. Some say the sunscreen makes it worse because of 'clogging pores' and that sun light helps clear acne, others says sunscreen helps it heal by protecting from the suns damaging effects. I'm left a little confused, but I wear sunscreen everyday anyway as I have fair skin.
@teavu60935 жыл бұрын
Natalie Solomon The poor clogging factor mainly depends on the overall formulation. If you find a sunscreen that doesn't clog your pores it certainly can help your skin.
@brittniep92195 жыл бұрын
The sun definitely doesn’t clear acne 😂 this is a myth based off of the natural antibacterial affects of the sun on cloths drying outside.

Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to MS! It also runs in my family; my grandfather, aunt and dad all had low levels of vitamin D when diagnosed. I’m now on a decently high dose of vitamin D for overall health AND to prevent my genetic predisposition for MS being triggered by low vitamin D (or hopefully any other environmental/lifestyle factors). But overall, it’s been studied and linked as an environmental trigger. Just another interesting reason to take vitamin D :)

We apply physical sunscreens also on our lips and hands. Even if they don't get absorbed through intact skin, it is likely that while eating, some will reach the digestive system. If they contain nano particles that could be a problem.
