Here's my top 7 iOS Synth apps that came out in 2018 for iPad and iPhone! This was not an easy top list to make, because there was a huge amount of synths to choose from. Now I know that Im late to the game with my "best of" video, however I am happy that I did wait. Because as usual there where some "straggler apps" that came out late in the year and I wanted to be able to choose from all of them, Check it out!

Discovered this channel some time ago, but didn't own an iOS device, so avoided watching because I didn't wanna feel bad about not owning one. Not any more though! My 2019 iPad Air arrived today, so it's time to binge watch these videos and pick some apps! You've earned a new subscriber. Just from 20-30 minutes of playing around with Audiokit's Synth One I'm also already super glad I went iOS this time around.

Jakob, you keep raising the bar of i0s content creators. I'm curious though about your blue and white cables in your productions. As for apps, I'm still blown away by the versatility of Spacecraft. It sounds amazing. Your review of this app brought a lot of depth to the table and for the price, wow. All the best for 2019.

Dear Jakob. This video was the carrot that lured me into the rabbit hole of synth apps. I’ve been playing with Moog Model D and Synth One for a few weeks now. I hooked my iPhone up to a Korg Air 25 wireless keyboard and have been having a blast! Another interesting thing happened... I started looking at analog synths and even ended up buying a used Volca Keys a few days ago. I had high hopes but what’s funny / sad is that the synth apps in many ways seem far superior in terms of the quality of sound and fun factor. I may need more practice though. I’m curious of your thoughts on Volca Keys and how they compare to synth apps and analog vs digital in general. Cheers!
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 5 жыл бұрын
Joe Seven Thank you for your kind words and I’m happy you found my content useful. Now since you’ve seen my content you probably understand how thorough I am. Im also careful not to talk about stuff I’ve never used, tried or tested myself. I want to make sure that the information I bring forth is as accurate as possible. So I cannot speak about my thoughts on the VOLCA Keys because I’ve never ever used it myself. . Now when it comes to the digital vs analogue topic. Well, I’ll give you my opinion on it and I hope you won’t take offence to what I’m about to say. . When talking “sound” I find the digital vs analogue debacle frustratingly ridiculous and uninteresting. To me it’s completely irrelevant since I always shop with my ears. For me it’s not about “highest quality” or “only analogue”. For me it’s what I like to listen to and use basically and I wouldn’t waste my time trying to go only analogue because of some pre-conceived notion that its is the only “real thing” or whatever. . I see a lot of people wasting time arguing about what’s best and what’s worst, this vs that and they sure do a lot of talking but not that much music making, it’s a damned shame. . Now there are some points that could be important when it comes to > controls < (not sound). Like the way that a digital knob/fader (potentiometer or pot) might be stepped and so when you tweak a filter cutoff the sound isn’t smooth like an analogue pot. This is an actual thing to consider. Some digital pots have a higher resolution and so the steps aren’t even noticeable. An analogue pot is always smooth. Good talking points right? . At the end of the day it’s always about what you like and that’s the only important thing. If what you like happens to be digital then what does that mean really? A producer/musician should be judging sound by what they hear in my opinion. . So if you find digital apps more to your taste then use that. A warning though. The more you browse app synths the more you’ll discover that some app synths have lower “fidelity” to them even thought they’re digital. This is due to how the developer designed the synth. There are some app synths that have a really old “analogue” sound to them. . Hell I’ve done blind tests on my channel where I played waveforms from a hardware MOOG Model D and the Model D app and %50 of the viewers guessed wrong, 30% had no idea and 20% got it right. Go check it out, search for haQ attaQ Moog Model d and you’ll find two comparison vids. . Just use your ears and you’ll be fine, don’t waste your time arguing over this topic with people who are only interested in being right all the time. 👍🏼

Synth one is my absolute favorite! I have D1 as well. I love that I can customize the arp sequence! The only issue I have is that nearly every time I try to use an arpeggiated sound, it never seems to sync tempo exactly right with the daw I paste it in. Of course I make sure the tempos are matched, but it always sounds slightly off! I cannot figure it out! I do not have this problem with any other synth!

@bitegoatie

These things are, as you say, personal. I don’t see choosing Tardigrain over Quanta, though Tardigrain is a simpler app to use. For me, Quanta is just much more flexible, which allows me to bend it to my will or to experiment in ways Tardigrain does not. It gives me these possibilities, however, at the expense of putting in more work to get a patch to where I want it to be. So I see how the “more music” criterion you use here would favor the simpler app, given that Tardigrain sounds good and gives those results with less fuss. Being the masochist and control freak I am, however, I used Quanta a lot. On drum synths, I am with you on DM2, but I still love Attack - which is even more of too much of a good thing, if that makes sense. To me, Noir is a good thing, but not enough of a good thing. Though, again, that seems to be what Bos had in mind. I fully support highlighting the Audiokit free synthesizer. The virtual knobs on that app are bizarre, but it is generally good-sounding, flexible, and free. A late arrival that made your secondary list but that you did not manage to use enough was Aparillo. I was all over Aparillo from day one (I must have bought it within minutes of it being posted) and I have pulled beautiful and crazy sounds from it regularly since release. That one is, to me, a delightful surprise of the year on the IOS padiverse.

Yes, some great apps in 2018. And there were great apps in 2017, 2016, 2015, ... and I probably have most of them on my iPad. Now I have too many synths! I have to decide which of these 20+ synths I will really learn (take a deep dive on each). So, what are the top 5 synths of the last 5 years for actual music-making, not just fiddling around???
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I don’t really choose synths based on “fiddling-around” myself. I always select stuff I can use as tools for my production work. Btw this is something I could actually make a video out of because it’s a good topic, so I’ll withhold my answer for now. 😉 Thanks for the idea! 👊🏼

Don't "learn a synth" - learn synthesis. There is very little new under the Sun once you understand how sound is generated, constructed and shaped. When you reach that point and have gotten your feet wet actually doing it systematically & analytically (as opposed to "fiddling around"), every synth is the same old, with parameter control layouts scrambled to throw you off for the first few minutes. What you use to get there is not important. Just find the type of sound or process (additive, subtractive, FM, wavetable, granular, spectral, ...) that you like and focus on one method of synthesis instead of constantly jumping between them all, wondering why it's all so complicated and confusing.

Hi Jacob I'm a new subscriber and I'm new to making music with ios devices. After watching your video, I bought volt synth but I have one question I want to buy an ipad but dont know which one I need for mainly music making. And I mean mainly music making. what are the specs that I need to run these synth apps and apps like band lab, garageband, pianoscaper and moodscaper, if you've heard of them? The ipad pro is really expensive. Do i have to have to get that one in particular? I would sincerely appreciate your feedback. I'm currently working on an album in collaboration with another youtuber and so far have 8 songs made primarily using ios iphone 6s apps.

I got a big butt hurt. Whatever happened to Xenon by Iceworks which took an approach never seen since. It was composition tool, sequencer with several synth engines plus a drum box. It just needs some tweaking. Such great ideas were lost I'm afraid. Just imagine if Sunriser came with patterns, scales, modes and a robust sequencer ++++. Dream on.

Hello, I mean.. is the additional lightning port on the Lightning to USB 3 cable can send audio? I would like to use it to adapter another lightning cabe to p2 (female) to be the output to send the sounds to the speakes.. actually the question is, how control the vstand send the sound to the speakes.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 5 жыл бұрын
The original Apple Lightning to USB3 does not work like that. The Lightning port is for charging only. Belkin makes an adapter with double lightning ports where one is for charging and the other one is for that ridiculous headphone port dongle, so I guess you could use it like that. However I’ve never tested it myself so I can’t confirm it for you. If you need multiple outputs then I’d recommend you get a proper class compliant sound interface with multiple outputs instead of that’s what you need. . Now, I’m unable to answer the second part of your question because I don’t understand what it is you are asking about? What do you mean by “vstand”?

The ios store has the best soft synths out there, and for the best prices. ios VSTs are like 1/10 the price of PC versions. My fave synths and efx are mostly iPad things.

I’m dying to know what that app is on your iPad mini that’s acting like an oscilloscope/visualizer. What on earth is going on there? It’s amazing.

When I feel low I see your vids, buy a synth or two. Then I feel better. Far better than pills and alcohol.

Hey! What about...... 😂. Samplr. I feel this really gets ignored and under rated. For me it is my go to granular for its production value. It has multiple modes, a built in multi track sequencer/sampler and massive Fx. No other granulare has as much potential and instant production qualities. It’s so easy to achieve some great sound/sequences and full performances by just using this app stand alone wth nothing else loaded.

I hear you and Yeah samplr is amazing. But it had no chance of getting on this list since it was released in 2013. 😉 It really is an awesome app and a lot of veteran iOS musicians think so too. The problem is that this app hasn’t received any updates for over 4 years so it’s considered abandonware. I do hope that the developer picks it up again and takes it into the 2020’s because it’s a great tool and I don’t want to see it disappear from the AppStore.

Quite disappointed with Volt Synth as it often does not output any audio without a lot of fiddling no matter what preset I choose, it’s frustrating and time wasting, and a limited amount of presets and no string section just pads leads etc. I thought the free synth you recommended was by the best synth sounds great and works on Bluetooth and it’s free.

UPDATE: I found a bug, I have to reinstall to make it work then the bug happens again no sound then this forces reinstall. I think the bug may be with the Bluetooth audio path. iPad Pro.

SynthOne is cool, but it has a lot of note trigger bugs that cause playing problems. I’ve played with every version so far and the bugs aren’t being fixed.
