How many people actually hated that tutorial though? I actually really liked it--it introduced everyone to all the characters and the tasks didn't take too long (even on my first try) and when the village gets raided and your friends get taken, you actually grow attached to the characters and you fear for their safety. I thought it was alright at the very least
@YuuoChaos6 жыл бұрын

In regards to KH2, I would argue that the tutorial only goes to Twilight Thorn. After that the game is relatively done with introducing stuff until you play as Sora. (when the prologue ends.) some people might think differently, but that's how I've always thought of that opening.
@Mars_over_seer6 жыл бұрын
I’m mixed on Twilight Town. One hand, Roxas is a great character and u really feel bad for him at the end of the prologue when he’s forced to fuse with Sora to stop the Organization. The other hand, the dialogue is a bit stilted (Not as much as Recoded) and it could be condensed so it won’t feel like it’s overstaying it’s welcome.

Yeah I have no interest in ultra sun or moon either. Something I've come to realize and somewhat respect is the fact that a lot of people don't give a crap about Pokémon stories and just button mash through cutscenes. While I do like having plot in Pokémon games, I understand why others don't, especially when replaying. Sun and Moon has a good plot but MAN does it like to shove it in your face. Even as an rpg player that lives story, this story feels like it's constantly in the way with all the rampant slow and often pointless cutscenes.

KernowShinigamiViper Lil'Dragon In fact I think the tutorials in gen 7 is the worst in the series(this is one of many reasons why I feel gen 7 is the worst gen in the series). It was bad in previous generations (that isn't gen 1 and 2 which basically had no forced tutorials) but at least in those generations the tutorials were reasonably short and in gen 3's case, the tutorial was integrated into the story quite well with wally's ralts showing up in battles and it being wally's starter.

I don't know, I don't think the Sun and Moon tutorial was that bad. Yeah, it was a bit slow, but at least it did a lot to familiarize the player with the other characters that are important. The other games never even bothered giving that much personality to secondary characters, let alone use them as much save for X and Y where those secondary characters got very little in the way of characterization and felt way less important despite how often you would run into them. Plus, Sun and Moon are the most narrative-focused of the main game series, so slowing down the player throughout it does prevent an overeager player to just fly past a lot of the groundwork for that narrative, at least in my opinion.

I really don’t understand why people hate on the opening of KH2 so much. It does an amazing job of setting the stage for the entire game afterwards, and the non-combat busywork section is almost entirely optional. You can do a lot of jobs for extra AP but you can also do like 2-3 mail deliveries, then go talk to Hayner and be done with it in less than a minute. The only other major tutorial sections are the market scene which shows the basic controls quickly (it takes 3 minutes tops if you read all the dialogue boxes), the opening fight with Seifer (which takes ~15 seconds to show you the HUD and show the combat controls) and the Dive to the Heart section, which is shorter than in KH1 and contains a ton more combat. The seven wonders section can take a little while if you get lost but they give you a map, and 2/4 challenges are combat based, all 4 can be done easily within 1.5 minutes. The character development and exposition takes a long time, but it is all very well done and builds anticipation and excitement for Sora’s restoration and the Organization as the villains. So why do people hate it so much? I don’t understand.

Actually school is not intended to teach You how to live in the real world. Your parents are supposed to teach that to You but most don't. School is intended to teach You the basics of understanding the world and give You a chance of learning what You are good at and giving You a solid base knowledge to know how to tackle things. For some reason parents rarely take the time to teach their kids things they are supposed, like doing the taxes, how to be a decent person and so on.

On the flip side of this case, the last game I've played to do tutorial's right is Need for Speed: Payback. It mostly just tells you the controls and what they do... and that's about it. Everything else that goes on in the opening sequences isn't expanded upon - unless necessary, like the drifting - but you quickly understand what they are and their purposes. Told little; learn lots. You had to get away from the police using back alleys and weaving through traffic and it made the game look amazing. While I didn’t necessarily mind the tutorials in Pokémon S/M, or really mind tutorials in general because I know that things will always pick up later on...there should be a way to skip it for longtime fans in the series. The best example is Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, which allowed you to skip the tutorials entirely and be able to refer back to it later on. Which was amazing for longtime fans of the series such as myself. US/UM did lessen the tutorial, at least...but not enough for it to be noticeable nor significant.

I felt like the problem with Sun and Moon wasn't that the “tutorial section„ was especially boring as it was implemented into the story itself, however I thought that that was also the biggest problem of it; as it was so looong it gnawed away at normal gameplay and took a whole QUARTER of the story away. I dashed through otherwise important story elements on the first island since it felt like they were just trying to teach me something I already knew. The tutorials in other games were so much simpler (but effective): this is a Pokemon, this is how you catch it, this is how to make it use moves, now go fight baddies & gym leaders

Andre Emerson once said of videogame tutorials that making one is about 3 times as time consuming as a regular mission because you have so many extra things to put in. Not only are there help tooltips to show the players what to do, but there's all these less obvious things like needing to build special enemies for you to fight because you don't have the gear you need to fight real enemies yet. Oh and the fact you have to code it to NOT let the player do things they would normally be free to do.

As soon as I saw the title of this, I immediately said "Driver". Then I thought, "That game is never talked about, despite how good it is and yet how abhorrent the 'tutorial' is. Doubtful it'll be on here." I am so glad I am wrong this time. Driver is, and always will be, my most hated tutorial. Took me WAY too long just to pass that, and that is with my brother helping me, looking in the book it came with, scouring what little internet content there was back in that day, and even attempting to use the cheats to my advantage (which didn't work). A major love/hate relationship with this game.

In regards to Pokemon and how it should give the player the option to view the tutorials or not, I think an interesting way to go about it would be to allow the player to choose the avatar's age as well as their gender. I'm not talking going full on character character creation like other RPGs, but rather a couple of simple options. For example, if they choose their avatar to be a preteen as usual (so around 11 or so), then the game instigates the tutorials as that age in-universe is typically when Trainers start their journeys. On the other hand, if they choose the avatar to be a teenager (I'm thinking between 15-17 perhaps), then the tutorials are skipped as the avatar is older than your average rookie Trainer and can be assumed to have done all this before. Just thought that's be an interesting way to go about it.

i personally think the fire emblem: blazing sword's tutorial was pretty bad, lyn's story was just a massive tutorial that dragged on, and its a bit insulting too since the tutorial wasn't in the original japan release, Nintendo shoved it in the international release since they thought we wouldn't be able to handle the game
@scissorman446 жыл бұрын
Considering the series was doing like crap outside Japan, and never performed really that well since until Awakening(including the fuck up of actually making things TOO hard in Radiant Dawn out of a translation error) I think it's comprehensible somewhat.
@Tetsaiken6 жыл бұрын
There were way too many things that were horribly wrong about Blazing Sword's tutorial. Some things weren't explained at all or weren't properly explained, and some tutorial parts shouldn't even be there to begin with. I'll just bold the parts you can read if you just want to TL;DR because it's kind of impossible for me to cut it down to 50 words. - *The support system was never explained.* There was absolutely no excuse for this. Supports are such a vital and integral part of the gameplay that it baffles me how they messed this one up. You couldn't even form *any* supports on Lyn's story, no matter the difficulty. It couldn't help to let us support characters in Lyn's story, and then carry it over to Hector or Eliwood's story? - *Players also needed to know about experience gain on unpromoted allies as opposed to promoted allies.* While yes, promoted characters you get at the very beginning are very useful, they don't do a very good job at telling you about the EXP gain disparity. And while it may be a pitfall to always feed kills to unpromoted characters over promoted (use promotes when you need them to do something), at least let the player know that other characters won't get as much EXP if you let Marcus dominate the battlefield, for example. And as for the logical aspects, *the tutorial did a very poor job at demonstrating combat.* For crying out loud, at the very beginning of the game, you are forced to attack a boss (as in, you attack first), with a glass cannon character, with your character 5HKOing the boss while the boss 2HKOs you. While the game has been demonstrating the weapon triangle, and how the axes have low accuracy rates with the weapon triangle in your favor, what the game does not tell you is that you're giving the boss a chance to kill you before you get your 5 hits in. *But of course, the game blankets this by scripting the fight* so that on the second encounter, the boss always misses, and you always crit on one of your hits. This was a poor job of demonstrating how to handle a boss, and I almost guarantee you, the next time this happens under any normal circumstance, you have a chance to actually die. They never actually taught the importance of knowing when to attack and when not to attack either, so this was just terrible tutorial design in of itself. Another problem I had with the tutorial was *the amount of hand-holding.* I get that Lyn's Story was a bunch of 10 tutorial chapters, but did it really have to extend into Eliwood's Story? For crying out loud, in Chapter 16, well into the middle of the game, they felt the importance to tell you about the Magic Weapon Triangle, which might I add they already explained in Lyn's Story. But perhaps the worst part about all these tutorials was that *it was heavily intrusive in the gameplay.* They all interrupt the pace and flow in the game. Some of the tutorials aren't even necessary and shouldn't even be there to begin with. (such as the aforementioned Magic Triangle) And yet, there were other vital details I felt really should have been explained. Blazing Sword. Amazing game. Terrible at teaching others how to play it. Even Sacred Stones got the tutorials part right, and that game is widely panned among most fire emblem players.
@amirgarcia5476 жыл бұрын
Raltkiz It’s not that they thought people wouldn’t be able to handle it, but the fact that it was the very first Fire Emblem game to be localized. So they of course knew that people wouldn’t be familiar with the series and its mechanics. Even so, they handled it VERY poorly.
@Moon5256 жыл бұрын
I agree with the idea for the Pokémon games. Simple question: "Have you played Pokémon before?" (y=no tutorial; no=tutorial) or even just an NPC asking "Oh would you like to know how to catch Pokémon?" or "Would you like to know about Pokémon type advantages?" and just have the player choose yes or no and have them be like "Oh ok cool you know this!" or "Ok I'll teach you!"

My mom had to teach me what the different driving things were like how to do a slalom, 180, and reverse 180. I emulated the game a couple years ago and it proved somewhat difficult to redo again. I like it from a story perspective but they could have done with a separate tutorial you could do to learn such things. I do like how Driver: San Fransisco has a hidden mission where you can redo this mission in it. Also like to think that this game being so demanding about skill with driving that it helped me become really good at driving in videogames. I always prefer to be the wheelman when I can be in games like GTAV and whatnot.

I think Miner's Haven is one of the games that take a lot of hours to complete in the tutorial section. The first life feels like the tutorial section to me, you learn a lot about different conveyors and upgraders and what you have to replace to increase your wallet. The first life ends at 25Qn but I powered through to 30sx to have a setup where I don't need to change much anymore, the reward for rebirthing is the actual gameplay. I think the first life is in a combined total of 200 hours of playtime. And once you learn there's a wiki for this, you learn that the tutorial doesn't tell you the relations between upgraders.
