Bit like Dobermans, Doberman have Bauceron in their breeding. My dad had the most placid Doberman you could meet but a burglar put his hand through my dad's window to break in and the Doberman fucked him up. Everytime he needed to turn he did, like he had a sixth sense for trouble but he was goofy and so friendly with people he knew.

After 2 boxers, a german shepard, a fox terrier and a jack russell, I thought i knew about dogs. And 3 months ago: came my belgian malinois (I choose her because we're both native from the same town (Malines = Mechelen). Now, I have to start all over again, I could never imagine that a dog could be so intelligent as my Malinois. She keeps me young and alert. What a joy!

I love what you said about how deeply the Rottweiler connects to his people. The bond is indeed impossible to describe. People who see Baron will tear up and tell me the best dog they ever had was a Rottweiler, and their loss still hurts. They are so amazing, and excellent service dogs!

Glad to see you mentioned the Giant Schnauzer, I had one and he was the best all around protection dog I ever had. He did everything without my having to train him, he just did it. Nobody could take anything out of my truck. He would grab their hand and apply more pressure, the longer the person held the object, the more pressure, but he turned the guy loose when the person dropped it. No fuss no muss and no blood. Now I have a Bouvier and she is equal to the Giant Schnauzer in every way but the hair. These are thinking dogs and much smarter than most. Seems to me herd dogs are the smartest dogs ever. Own one and you will be hooked on them forever.

@@spaceslime947 My shepinois pup (gsd x malinois) is an absolute coward, he was hiding behind the couch when we got a new coffee table. He runs upstairs whenever anyone comes to the house. A big great dane came upto him, not aggressive just being curious and he ran behind me, can't really blame him for that though they're do big. That said he's only 7 months old and usually on the lead he's a bit too protective. He's still a good watch dog though and if you didn't know him his bark is impressive. From what I've seen if you want a gsd guard dog it's better to get a bitch, they're much braver than dogs imo.
@MrDelsoleg11
@MrDelsoleg11 3 жыл бұрын
While yes the dog has to be confident in its ability to protect, the dog still needs to be aggressive in order to protect well. without aggression the less effective it will be since the aggression is what drives up the adrenaline and in turn makes the dog much less prone to stopping if it does get hurt aka "game" in the dog world , but it has to be a controlled aggression as in can be turned on and off in any instance. Just like us for example if we are defending our lives aggression is what keeps us fighting regardless of injury. Mma fighters use this method in the ring once that fight start all they want to do is kick the other guys head off but once it's over they can hug and be respectful win or loss. The dog that can be smart and aggressive will be the best protection dog.

Good content! I'll add my own 2 cents here: Know what you're getting if you want a close protection dog. They REQUIRE training to be the good dogs on this list. Especially those top four. Most of these breeds are very high-strung and nervous if they only get basic obedience training. Many of them, especially doberman and gsd, are lacking in chill without advanced training or DAILY work. They *need* to be taught what's okay and what's dangerous, or they become prone to misbehavior. They were bred to be easily trained and molded to this type of work, but the trade-off is a sort of blank slate. And yes, it can be done informally. Many of my colleagues skip formal training for their rotties or gds's in favor of strong daily routines and in-house verbal discipline, but it's THERE. And they do it more than daily - it's usually constant focus and attention on what the dog is doing, even after the conscious training is complete.

Giants are awesome. They have no downside if you don't mind giving them plenty of exercise. I live in Michigan so I need a dog that can take the cold weather well and their double-coat does the job. Also, I enjoy the long lifespan and overall health of the breed. With the willingness to please and protect, high intelligence, athleticism, power, health, double-hypoallergenic-coat, this dog leaves nothing to be desired.

Absolutely!! I had a neighbor growing up in rural Alaska that had a few for property protectors. They score up with GS for me. I grew up with Akitas, Huskies, etc as protectors but they were to independent and would run off a lot to chase predators. That's never good with bears and cougars. Up there you had to have a dog that is resilient to that kind of weather. That's guys giant schnauzers had their hair long for the wet and cold, were amazingly smart!! And dependable like morning prayers! We live in the lower 48 now and in a larger city, we have Dobermans now and I absolutely love them but they wouldn't have made it up there

You did an excellent job with this video and really touched on the intangibles that most people don’t consider when choosing a Personal Protection Dog. There is no question that a personal protection dog requires a different skill set than a home or property protection dog. It is also hard to argue with your choices, especially the top 4. Although I am a big Belgian Malinois fan, I would have to agree that most people would be better served by a German Shepherd due to the audio and visual deterrent coupled with being easy to live with on a daily basis. My personal dog is a Belgian Malinois. He is being trained at the moment and was acquired from Europe by the company that is training him. They are tops on the east coast and in my opinion tops in the country. I am really excited about this dog because in addition to having all the positive qualities of the breed he will also have high visual and audio deterrence. He was 46 lbs at 18 weeks which is way outside the growth chart. He is expected to easily exceed the weight of his father who was 85lbs and will probably approach 100lbs so he will provide plenty of audio and visual deterrence. Keep up the good work. Just for curiosity, I would like to hear more about the Giant Schnauzer, in particular why it isn't seen more in Police and Military use? They are certainly a longer lived and healthier breed than either than the Rottweiler or the German Shepherd. I have heard though that they are NOT as easy to train. I recently saw a video put out by a company that is hired to put down prison riots and they use the Giant Schnauzer almost exclusively. For this narrow purpose, I can see why the Giant Schnauzer might be preferred. When sending dogs against inmates who are physically strong and large, you want dogs heavy and powerful enough to resist being lifted and thrown around against objects to kill or disable them. Most Belgian Malinois are too light and even German Shepherds do not generally get as heavy as the Giant Schnauzer. For everything else though i would rather have a Belgian Malinois or German Shepherd. I know the Giant Schnauzer is Large and Black, but I just don't think it has an intimidating look. It reminds me more of a big Teddy Bear. In comparison a Black Cane Corso, a dog of similar size, is much more intimidating looking with a deeper bark.

Just a point of interest - had Czech working line GSDs since late 1960s (great dogs) but because of my age & limited mobility (arthritis) I had to "downsize". After doing my research I got a German Pinscher. Former farm dogs - hunting, protection, herding etc. Really pleased with him. I agree with every choice on the list. If there is room for only 10 I can certainly understand some breeds being omitted. I personally have had great experiences with American bulldogs as personal protectors. I’ve owned three in my adult life. My most recent one is currently for filling the role of a guide dog, personal protection, and loyal family pet. I went blind in 2018. My dog is A part-time guy dog as I believe that learning to use the cane should be my primary skill. As a guard dog or a personal protector he behaves admirably. I live in Baltimore. I encounter a lot of strange things here. But he is a very observant dog when it comes to strangers in countering myself or my daughter when we are walking. I was very apprehensive about going to parks in certain public places upon losing my site. But he makes sure to always keep a watchful eye on my daughter and or my niece when we are out in playgrounds or public places. He also makes sure that they are secure when they are playing out in the yard. Livability is great except for the drool. But that something you get used to with Johnson‘s type American bulldogs. He is pretty cool at riding in the backseat of Lyft or Uber’s with me too. And he loves the children.

We have had mostly rotts and RottX; generally great dogs. One of the dogs we had turned out to be a RottXFila, and the difficulty of taking such a dog into public cannot be stressed too much. He was, just as you said, great with us - very easily going and wanting little but to be close. He was submissive to the the Tervuren we had when we adopted him. However, he was UTTERLY VILE with strangers, just as the standard for the breed described. He got walked in a muzzle in case we lost situational awareness and someone came too close. I doubt we will have another, as much as I loved him - the life span can be pretty short and cancer can be an issue as it was for him. If we did, it would only be if we had an RV and travelled in it. We have always had rescues, whether from formal rescue or a rehoming. That will likely continue, but if I were to shop for a dog, the Boerboel and Ridgeback are the top candidates for us.

My dog is constantly being trained, you cannot assume they will be disciplined out the gate. This goes both ways, he could definitely be too aggressive and dangerous without proper training as well. Their drive and intelligence means you will always have your hands full, but in a good way. Great video.

I have a Czech line shepherd a Mali x Dutch and a Rhodesian. He for sure looks the part and sounds the part and makes a great alert dog letting me know of anyone near and will switch on with a word. But his drive and the way he works is different to the shepherds, they love a bite, but he will only bite when pushed into his defence drive (and a monstrous bite it is) he doesn't have the same willingness and eagerness to get a mouthful which makes training a targeted bite quiet difficult as you don't wanna push them in defence all the time as they just won't enjoy training and it can end up causing problems. They are great working dogs just maybe not specifically for protection work. However of course it all depends on dog temperament

zorpio When two dogs are being aggressive and want to fight, there’s no “outsmarting” or any tactical skill. They go head to head, bite and wrestle. A Rottweiler, is bigger, stronger, heavier, more muscular, has a bigger thicker head generating a stronger bite and is built tougher than a doberman. A Rottweiler is very intelligent but a Doberman is more intelligent. Doberman is also more athletic but the sheer size, weight and power of a rott would easily overwhelm any Doberman. Also don’t act like a Rottweiler is an English mastiff lmao. Rotts are also fairly athletic it’s just that the Doberman is even more so, it doesn’t really make a difference when it’s a 130lbs huge muscular thick boned dog with a huge bone crushing head and jaw vs a 100lbs slender lean muscled dog with athleticism that won’t make a difference in a fight. I don’t know why the fuck you guys are bitching about who would win in a fight as that’s irrelevant and pointless but if you’re gonna say shit at least speak facts. Rottweiler is just bigger, stronger, heavier and easily overwhelms a Doberman. There’s a reason it’s #4 on top 10 most powerful dog list from dogumentary tv and Doberman isn’t even on it.

I'm glad for your comment, especially as a woman that's looking for a dog for my personal safety. All the videos I've watched have led me towards mastiffs, especially the Bullmastiff. With the Cane Corso coming in second. Watching this video I'm now not even sure what to look for 😵‍💫 Have you found either of your dogs to be more instinctually adept to protecting/guarding you? Do either of them show a natural thoroughness to threats?(like if a known threat has come and left, do they stay alert, or maybe relax; 'out of sight out of mind') I'm sorry for all of these questions, but I'm in a really hairy situation with a creepy guy. Having a dog would be such a relief for my nerves, but I would hate for a situation to come up and realize the doggo simply can't quite grasp the maggots slimey ways. Again, sorry for the word vomit, and thank you in advance for any reply.

Dutch shepherds are phenomenal dual purpose dogs, not quite as neurotic as a a Mal(igator) which I feel is better suited for constant work but every dog has its own personality and can be molded in a particular way. I think the video could articulate the downsides of personal protection training a little more objectively but it’s still a great video, he covers all the important stuff. A “do not pet” Velcro patch comes to mind.

From personal experience with the Dogo and the criteria used on this list, the Dogo definitely deserves a spot. Strong, loyal to the death, very intimidating, easily socialized as it was specifically bred into them, near impervious to pain, and built to take on far larger and more dangerous prey than your average back alley thug. Plus, in my experience, dogos are SUPER trainable

Caucasian and dogo dont belong here. caucasians can be a nightmare to own and socialize, dogos can be difficult to protection train as they are highly sensitive emotionally and their aggression switch is VERY hard to flip off. ive met many dogos and own one myself. she would protect me but even with training its possible she might have trouble coming out out of that attack mode. got to remember they have fighting dog in them and some can run hot. remember dogo is one of his favorite breeds. if they arent here he has a good reason. as for caucasians, i shudder to imagine.

I´m really loving all the top ten videos, that you´ve put out recently, so thank you! I´m really wondering about one thing however: you´ve put the Doberman Pinscher on several of your lists now and you´ve never listed health issues as one of their weaknesses. As a German dog lover, I´ve abandoned the thought of getting a Dobermann (German name) completely, because the breed is supposed to be broken beyond repair. I´ve read reports saying that up to 50% of all Doberman Pinschers suffer from a genetic heart condition that´s always fatal and near-undetectable. I´ve talked to owners who said that throwing a ball for their 3 year-old dog is like playing russion roulette, because you never know if your dog´s going to come back to you or have a heart attack on the way. Is this different in the US? I suppose i COULD just be the European gene pool, where this is an issue... (after all the GSD is a much healthier breed in the US too).

Thanks for the excellent content. I would love to see an interview with a pro to understand how much training is required to build skill in a puppy and maintain in a dog...frequency etc

Seconded. But for anyone who wants a sneak peak, the answer is: daily training. Training classes from pros will give the dog a basic understanding of the involved commands and basic obedience conditioning, but owners with GOOD working dogs are spending time with that training daily. A working dog is part of your lifestyle, like your daily music or food choices.

Your right about that imposing bark. I have a jack Russel mix who has a VERY loud bark. Our gate isn't see-through so most people assume that he's a large dog. He's only 20 pounds!

Same, we live in an apartment and our fluffy, long-eared, short-legged hound has a deep, growling bark that she uses when she thinks something suspicious is going on. But she has zero personal protection abilities and any potential burglar who's already familiar with the area or has staked out a target would realize she is no threat.

I am a die hard fan of Belgian Malinois, and will be biased with it as i own one and love it to the core. But the list what you have put together is perfect considering the livability aspect and intimidation factor of the personal protection dog. Even me without bias will have the same list of dogs that you have on my list too.

Hi Dogumentary, Appreciating and enjoying the videos you put out. On this one I was just thinking that the American Akita or Great Japanese Shepherd Dog as it was called would be a great personal protection dog. It's an intelligent breed (can think and decide for itself), courageous, attached to and close to family and it's owner, and it's look can be deterring. It weighs between 30 and 40 kilograms. I'm curious as to how you would score the American Akita breed as a personal protection dog breed. Cheers!

Its about LIVABILITY. I've had German Shepherd & the Doberman, only because I didn't want too many hairs all over me, friends, family & everywhere in the house & car. Hovering the house & car twice a Day with the GS, once a week with the Doberman. More time to play, Less COST of maintenance with doberman, so I always will go for a Doberman, also more healthy dog than GS. GS Hip & Leg Problems Guarantee. So common, last 2 years of life was Soul destroying. Now I see a GS, it always brings Bad memories of the suffering... R.I.P. Miss u. Both dogs so easy to train & work with everyday. Respect & Love to ALL breed of dogs. Xxx
