Today, I’m also going to be your personal “Physician’s Assistant” right alongside the amazing Dr. Alan Desmond, Gastroenterologist and author of the new book, “The Plant-Based Diet Revolution.” My parents have been raving about him so much and, today, you’ll see why. His knowledge and expertise of gut health and the microbiome is SO vast that we’re actually breaking our conversation into a two-part series because we want you to (pun intended) digest everything he says.
From the get-go, Dr. Desmond lays out some sobering statistics for gut health in the US…1 in 3 adults under the age of 50 have diverticular disease, colorectal cancer will affect more than 1 in 20 adults in their lifetimes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is off the charts...
If all health begins in the gut, then the US needs a major overhaul and that’s what we’re here to do over the next two weeks.
In part one today, we whip out the prescription pad and give you real Doctor’s orders...The Top 10 Prescriptions for Better Health. But, unlike most prescriptions that simply treat the problem, these prescriptions will get to the root and help you solve these problems.
The best part? They don’t involve taking more pills...just beautiful, nutritious, whole plant-based foods, the optimal diet for health and longevity.
Ok, my friends. The Doctor is in and it’s your turn to spend some quality time with Dr. Alan Desmond.

Great conversation. Very informative. I became a vegetarian over 45 years ago. I became vegan about 25 years ago. Then 3 years ago, I increased the uncooked fruits & veggies to 95% of my diet & the remaining 5% is beans, hummus, nuts & rice. I made these dietary choices for my health, to prevent the suffering of animals & for the benefit of the environment. I am 79 years old, still working & exercising. Over the years, many people have said to me that they could never eat the way I do. I respond that one day everyone will be eating this way because survival of the species and protection of the environment will demand it. That day is here. Keep up the good work, Rip & Dr. Desmond.

I eat large amount of whole wheat flour and I'm good at this time. I follow Mcdougall diet and he's cool with it. My health is normal and not progressing towards unhealthy in any way. I went to London and it was sunny for the 3 days I was there. Beautiful and nice.

Great interview (Part 1) with Dr. Alan Desmond "Plant Based Diet Revolution". Love him trying to reclaim the word "diet" from the weight loss industry which really doesn't care about true biological healthiness of people! His Galileo Moment - Thanking his patients is inspirational. Thank you Rip for another great episode of PLANTSTRONG podcast. (Part 2) - I predict will be just as HEALTHY!

I just wish veg prices were more reasonable. They talk about wanting lower healthcare costs, but one eggplant for $5.99 or one broccoli crown for $3.50 or a punnet of tomatoes for $8.99 makes it really difficult for low-income families to add veg to their grocery bill. Even a small pack of tempeh is near $8. So, I make my own. If they subsidised farmers and did an "eat more veg" campaign, maybe the cost of healthcare could improve.

Thank you both for sharing this needed information! ❤❤I am thankful to hear Dr. Desmond talk of plant proteins.🌱 (~40 min) it was a relief and encouragement. I needed to hear that to support what I thought, but need to hear and learn more about it. I had a hip replacement last Friday! In the hospital they stressed protein, I needed 100 grams a day of protein to rebuild myself, (eat meat, etc the routine SAD) I'm thrilled to hear what Dr. Desmond had to say!!!! It was challenging, (and is), to even tell anyone that I ate vegan. 🪴 I'm doing well, and look forward to getting better! ❤❤ I did buy Dr. Desmond's book, just starting it, and I love it.

I'm well on my way to be 100% Vegan. Not so much that I don't like meat, what I do like is how my body feels when it's not bloated, and I hate the way agriculture has become...animals aren't frolicking around lush green pastures like they want us to believe. Wake up people, it's cruel. My moment was when I gave up milk, just milk (still consuming cheese + ice cream + yogurt), within a week I could breathe thru my nose at night. Not all stuffed up anymore. I'm 85% there. 🙂

My issue is (and this is common with women) that because I have to limit calories to not gain weight, it actually IS hard to get enough protein without supplements. And, I heard that some protein gets wasted (burned as fuel instead of being used for tissue maintenance and repair) when someone is limiting calories...so that you actually need to eat a bit extra protein. My recent blood tests showed my B12 is almost TOO high. I may need to cut back on supplements.

@@Frenchblue8 60 Billion sentient factory farmed land animals slaughtered per year. Fiber amount is not the measure of these more ethical issues. If we save them by getting more people to become 20-50% plant-based it would be better than getting the few that we are getting to go full vegan. Many junk food vegans are maybe doing better than the average of 8g of fiber daily. Still most of us are fiber deficient if you look at the studies of healthiest tribes around the world.
