I was an 0311 in the Marine Corps. You would never catch me wearing my uniform off base or around civilians. I couldn't stand the attention it brought me. As a former 0311, 0369, 8411, and 0251 (now extinct), I agree with your post, and have had encounters with certain civilians RE/Mil discussions that went nowhere, nowadays because of civilians' abject ignorance of military matters, It might not be totally their faults, but you can see the results of politicians' misuse of the military, which ends up in fiascos like Afghanistan.

That last guy though when asked about his missing combat patch "I gave it to a little kid a bit ago" I mean.... How ... does he think that's what an actual vet would do? trying to impress a random little kid for some creepy reason but even dumber that he thinks uniform accessories are easy to get replacements by. does he think military personnel could just walk up to his supplies officer and be like "Hey so I was at this mall and gave my combat patch to this kid, so do you have a random one lying around I could get?" What's next a VA that's actually properly functional and gives vets what they need? I haven't had the privilege to serve but I doubt it works like that at all. I was privileged with being close friends with actual vets (and some currently serving) and just knowing all they go through and sacrifice serving this sickens me as it should any decent person. BTW God bless all of you real vets, active and reserve personnel who sacrifice so much of your lives. There was The Stolen Valor Act in 2005. Made it illegal as such to wear a fake uniform or medal. SCOTUS said ‘unconstitutional’ in 2012; abridgement of free speech ( don’t agree with the reasoning). Another Stolen Valor Act was passed in 2013, making it illegal to wear fake uniforms and/or medals for personal gain. Funny thing is, it is still illegal to impersonate a police officer for any reason, in every jurisdiction I know.

I was gifted a T-shirt from a marine turned veterinarian that I used to work with. Before I felt comfortable wearing the T-shirt in public, I called a marine recruit center to ask if it would be considered stolen valor to wear said shirt (fyi its a vietnam helicopter pilot reunion shirt and I wasn't even born when that war took place). The marine told me that as long as I'm not trying to get a discount or telling people that I served, all is well. I still rarely wear the T-shirt and will not accept any discount or handshakes from people because its just wrong. I was given a discount at a restaurant once, but immediately alerted the waitress and paid full price for my meal. Praise and kudos to those that serve/served and I wish punishment on those that steal valor. Its one of the most shameful things out there, if you ask me. ✌🏾

People who do this are either crooks looking for a quick buck, discounted meal or to hit on women. Or, they're clearly mentally ill if they fight to stick to their stories once exposed. Only the one guy admitted he was a fake soldier. My Brother in Law (now deceased) use to go to Air shows dressed as a Pilot and walk around to get attention he stood next to Fighter Jets as if he flew them, he'd get inside the cockpits and have my sister take his picture (who btw was oblivious to his facade) He did this for several years and pretty much got away with it until he climbed into a Jet in front of the actual pilot who approached him and asked for his Military ID. He couldn't produce it so the Pilot called for the M.P's to question him. My sister had to deal with the embarrassment of standing there with their children while the real Air Force told him what he was doing was illegal and they had the authority to place him under arrest because he was on an Air Force Base. How humiliating for my sister and her kids...but even afterwards she defended him saying that he had just forgotten his Military ID. Pathetic. All he did was go to a Surplus store and purchase an outdated flight suit. In his lifetime he claimed to be a Doctor, a Pilot, a Clergy, a writer that wrote all the Black History Encyclopedias...(although he was a white guy) A country music singer and an undercover CIA agent for the President of the United States. He once disappeared for a week and when he returned he told my Sister he had flown the President to Mexico for a secret meeting with the Mexican President and that he couldn't disclose the details of his mission or he'd have to kill her. In reality, all he did was work for a Sheet Metal company as a Gopher... He was as mentally sick as it gets in that respects. I honestly think he was mildly retarded as well.I would confront him for his lies and he'd flip out on me like a crazy person. P.S- I say if they're gonna go around dressing like a Clown in Uniform then they should join the Circus.

Sadly by my area of work we have people who "claim" to be homeless vets always holding signs asking for "anything". While I can't prove or disprove their status, I see them often in the same place and area several times a week. They aren't the only ones. There are plenty of panhandlers in general in the area, one guy even pretending his has a disability, holding a sign that says "Anything Helps" and walking with his feet together going up and down the side of the shopping complex I work in, pretending. Again, same person, same area. These types of people sicken me honestly. There are people out there who truly are on their feet who need help and yes, some actually are vets who, for some reason, ended up in a position of homelessness. The fakers piss me off, but there is nothing that can be done. While there are plenty of cops in the area, I don't think the cops stop them, so they continue to beg for money. One person I talked to at my job (a customer), thinks the reason in the area I work is because it's highly religious as there is a temple down the road. Even if that's the case, it's so horrible that people would give money to people who clearly aren't the real deal.
